  • Recently, the on-chip autofocus (AF) function has become essential to the CMOS image sensor. An auto-focus usually operates using phase detection of the photocurrent difference from a pair of AF pixels that have focused or defocused. However, the phase-detection method requires a pair of AF pixels for comparison of readout. Therefore, the pixel variation may reduce AF performance. In this paper, we propose a color-selective AF pixel with a plasmonic nanostructure in a 0.9 μ㎡ pixel. The suggested AF pixel requires one pixel for AF function. The plasmonic nanostructure uses metal-insulator-metal (MIM) stack arrays instead of a color filter (CF). The color filters are formed at the subwavelength, and they transmit the specific wavelength of light according to the stack period and incident angles. For the optical analysis of the pixel, a finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) simulation was conducted. The analysis showed that the MIM stack arrays in the pixels perform as an AF pixel. As the primary metric of AF performance, the resulting AF contrasts are 1.8 for the red pixels, 1.6 for green, and 1.5 blue. Based on the simulation results, we confirmed the autofocusing performance of the MIM stack arrays.

  • The annealing of natural beryl powder used for the thermoluminescent dosimetry was investigated in order to eliminate effect of previous exposure. Through the glow curve analysis, the optimal annealing treatment was found to be one hour annealing at 145$0^{\circ}C$, but annealing for one hour at 55$0^{\circ}C$ was sufficient for reuse of natural beryl powder. There are two distinguished glow peaks at $65^{\circ}C$ and 20$0^{\circ}C$ of heating temperature during readout process. The $65^{\circ}C$ glow peak fades away rapidly, but the 20$0^{\circ}C$ glow peak remains very stable. It is, therefore, quite feasible to use the 20$0^{\circ}C$ glow peak for thermoluminescent dosimetry.

  • Magnetic field sensors made from superconducting quantum interference device (SQUID) are the most sensitive low-frequency sensors available, enabling measurements of extremely weak magnetic fields from the brain. Neuromagnetic measurements allow superior spatial resolution, compared with the present electric measurements, and superior temporal resolution, compared with the fMRl and PET, providing useful informations for the functional diagnoses of the brain. We developed a 4-channel SQUID system for neuromagnetic applications. The main features of the system are its simple readout electronics and compact pickup coil structure. A magnetically shielded room has been constructed for the reduction of environmental magnetic noises. The developed SQUID system has noise level lower than the magnetic noise from the brain. Magnetic field signals of the spontaneous r-rhythm activity and auditory evoked magnetic fields have been measured.

  • A new dynamic passband filter enable to control the bandwidth using converging readout beam in photorefractive diffraction grating with high-efficiency is proposed and experimentally demonstrated. In this proposed scheme, the 3dB passband of a volume grating in crystal is theoretically predicted and the experimental results are obtained in consistent with our derivation that the bandwidth is controlled from 0.35nm to 3.3nm at the center wavelength of 670. 1nm.

  • As infrared light is radiated, the CMOS Readout IC (ROIC) for the microbolometer type infrared sensor detects voltage or current when the resistance value in the bolometer sensor varies. One of the serious problems in designing the ROIC is that resistances in the bolometer and reference resistor have process variation. This means that each pixel does not have the same resistance, causing serious fixed pattern noise problems in sensor operations. In this paper, Reference resistor compensation technique was proposed. This technique is to compensate the reference resistance considering the process variation, and it has the same reference resistance value as a bolometer cell resistance by using a comparator and a cross coupled latch.

  • The IRFPA (InfraRed Focal Plane Array) ROIC (ReadOut Integrated Circuit) was designed in folded-cascode Op-Amp using $0.35{\mu}m$ CMOS technology. As the folded-cascode has high open-loop voltage gain and fast settling time, that used in many analog circuit designs. In this paper, folded-cascode Op-Amp for ROIC of the $32{\times}32$ IRFPA has been designed. HSPICE simulation results are unit gain bandwidth of 13.0MHz, 90.6 dB open loop gain, 8 V/${\mu}m$ slew rate, 600 ns settling time and $66^{\circ}$ phase margin.

  • Recently, we have set up a new digital CCD camera system, MicroMax YHS-1300 manufactured by Roper Scientific for Ha observation by Solar Flare Telescope at Bohyunsan Optical Astronomy Observatory. It has a 12 bit dynamic range, a pixel number of 1300$\times$1030, a thermoelectric cooler, and an electric shutter. Its readout speed is about 3 frames per second and the dark current is about 0.05 e-/p/s at $-10^{\circ}C$. We have made a system performance test by confirming the system linearity, system gain, and system noise that its specification requires. We have also developed a data acquisition software which connects a digital camera con-troller to a PC and acquires H$\alpha$ images via Microsoft Visual C++ 6.0 under Windows 98. Comparisons of high quality H$\alpha$ images of AR 9169 and AR 9283 obtained from SOFT with the corresponding images from Learmonth Solar Observatory in Australia confirm that our H$\alpha$ digital observational system is performed properly. Finally, we present a set of H$\alpha$ images taken from a two ribbon flare occurred in AR 9283.

  • MIRIS (Multipurpose Infra-Red Imaging System), the main payload of STSAT-3 (Science and Technology Satellite-3), is the first Korean Infrared Space Telescope developed by KASI (Korea Astronomy and Space Science Institute). The FM (fight model) of MIRIS has been recently completed, and various performance tests have been made to measure system parameters such as readout noise, system gain, linearity, and dark current. The MIRIS FM has been integrated to the satellite system for the environment tests scheduled in September 2012. The MIRIS is expected to be launched in November 2012.

  • The imaging areas of currently available optical detectors are relatively small to cope with large image areas such as telescope focal Planes. One Possibility to obtain large detection areas is to assemble mosaics of Charge Coupled Devices(CCDs) and drive them simultaneously. Parallel driving of many CCDs together rules out the possibility of individual tuning; however such optimisation is very important when the ultimate low light level performance is required particularly for new devices. In this work, a new concept has been developed for an entirely novel approach where the drive waveforms are multiplexed and interleaved. This simultaneously reduces the number of leadout connections and permits individual optimisation efficiently. The controller has been designed to include one electronic of component produced by CAD software where most of the digital circuits are integrated to minimise the component count and improve the efficiency of the system greatly. The software has an open architecture to permit convenient modificationl by the user to fit their specific purposes. The desire of controller allows great flexibility of system parameters by the softwa re, specifically for the compatibility to deal with any number of mixed CCDs and in any format within the practical limit. The system has been integrated to test the performance and the result is discussed for readout noise, system linearity and cross-talk between the CCDs. The system developed in this work can be applicable not only for astro nomical observation with a telescope but also in other related fields for low light level detection systems such as spectroscopic application, remote sensing and X-ray detecti13n systems with large sensing areas and high resolution.

  • On-chip micro humidity sensor, using $CN_x$ films for the sensing material, was designed, simulated, and fabricated with Op amp based readout circuit and diode temperature sensors. To compensate the temperature and other gases, two methods were applied. One is wheatstone-bridge with reference FET that eliminates other undesirable chemical species, and the other is a diode temperature sensor to compensate the temperature effect. $CN_x$ film can be a new humidity sensing material, and has a strong potential to adapt to smart sensors or multi-sensors using MEMS or nano-technology. A particular design technology for integration of sensors and systems together was proposed that whole fabrication process could be achieved by a standard CMOS process.
