  • Concept mapping was used to investigate kindergarten teachers' knowledge about early childhood literature instructional content. Participants were 87 teachers recruited by the Provincial Authority for Supervision of Education in Jeonam Province. Data were analyzed by Yun's (1998) method based on Novack & Gowin (1984), Morine-Dershimer (1993), and Markham et al. (1994). Findings were that (1) the majority of the participants perceived superordinate concepts of early childhood instructional content in literature to be typesof literature, reading, writing, speaking, expression, and listening. Subordinate concepts were stated by 456 different words. (2) Types of literature and writing were highest in frequency of superordinate concepts and were also high among subordinate concepts and hierarchy. (3) Teachers' concepts varied by teaching careers in writing and reading.

  • In this paper, we have proposed Auto-TUS, an automatic transcription module of three union symbols-hyphen, dash and tilde (‘’, ‘―’, ‘∼’)-using their linguistic contexts. Few previous studies have discussed the problems of ambiguities in transcribing symbols into Korean alphabetic letters. We have classified six different reading formulae of the union symbols, analyzed the left and right contexts of the symbols, and investigated selection rules and distributions between the symbols and their contexts. Based on these linguistic features, 86 stereotyped patterns, 78 rules and 8 heuristics determining the types of reading formulae are suggested for Auto-TUS. This module works modularly in three steps. The pilot test was conducted with three test suites, which contains respectively 418, 987 and 1,014 clusters of words containing a union symbol. Encouraging results of 97.36%, 98.48%, 96.55% accuracy were obtained for three test suites. Our next phases are to develop a guessing routine for unknown contexts of the union symbols by using statistical information; to refine the proper nouns and terminology detecting module; and to apply Auto-TUS on a larger scale.

  • This syudy analyzed the main bodies, marginal space, Position of the main bodies of current textbooks in high schools and "the eriteria of reading system for textbooks" which was suggested the Department of Education and Provided some suggestions for the improvement. The research methods used for the study were both literature review and survey rdsdarch with a questionaire. Inorder to research for the main body of textbook, space of margin, the optimum position of the main body, sizes of litters, spaces between letters, words, lines, length of lines, sizes of main body and margin, and margin and position of main body were checked through a related literature review. For the questionaire experiment, a questionaire based on data drawn from analysis of current textbooks, :criteria for reading system of textbook" suggested by the Department of Education, and some suggestions for improvement by the researcher was made and used for the test, targetting 384 body and girl student in high schools.n high schools.

  • The Saemaul Mini-Library system had to start as a purely voluntary grass-roots movement without a tax su n.0, pport. In other words, it had to depend on voluntary contributions in time and labor by the reading club members for its finance and daily maintenance and operation. The purpose of the study is to analyse the actual condition of a Saemaul Mini-Library, which is established in a rural and a fishing village. To meet this purpose, I will survey the function and the meaning of a Saemaul Mini-Library and the main tendency of it-now did it start and how did it develop and I will analyse the general condition of structural factors (establishment, materials, reading club) in a Saemaul Mini-Library.

  • The effects of two literacy programs, Balanced Literacy Instruction(BLI) and Phonics Instruction were studied in 40 three- and four-year old children. BLIwas created to compensate for the limits of the Whole Language Approach(WLA) and of Phonics Instruction(PI). The WLA focuses on writing and communication but lacks concrete instruction methods and overlooks technical aspects of reading and writing. On the contrary, PI is logical, stressing phonemic recognition, skill in distinguishing words, and the rules of consonants and vowels. By combining the best of both PI and WLA to create BLI, this study showed that children who received BLI significantly improved their ability of phoneme recognition, reading, writing and understanding of the content of a book, letting us conclude that BLI is the more effective method for teaching literacy.

  • Recently, lip-reading has been studied actively as an auxiliary method of automatic speech recognition(ASR) in noisy environments. However, almost of research results were obtained based on the database constructed in indoor condition. So, we dont know how developed lip-reading algorithms are robust to dynamic variation of image. Currently we have developed a lip-reading system based on image-transform based algorithm. This system recognize 22 words and this word recognizer achieves word recognition of up to 53.54%. In this paper we present how stable the lip-reading system is in environmental variance and what the main variant factors are about dropping off in word-recognition performance. For studying lip-reading robustness we consider spatial valiance (translation, rotation, scaling) and illumination variance. Two kinds of test data are used. One Is the simulated lip image database and the other is real dynamic database captured in car environment. As a result of our experiment, we show that the spatial variance is one of degradations factors of lip reading performance. But the most important factor of degradation is not the spatial variance. The illumination variances make severe reduction of recognition rates as much as 70%. In conclusion, robust lip reading algorithms against illumination variances should be developed for using lip reading as a complementary method of ASR.

  • There is a problem that some spoken words are not consistent with the written words when Arabic numerals in Korean language are read. Since some rules for reading the Arabic numerals are not clear, the numerals should be read carefully by recognizing the position of the numbers in sentence, the relationship of the numerals with measurement nouns and other writing elements, and context. In view of technical writing, this work is to appreciate some rules for writing Korean numerals in place of Arabic numerals by studying the works regarding numerals, classifiers and measurement nouns.

  • The purpose of this study was to examine the awareness level of the prolonged sound rules in elementary school students. The participants in this study were 148 elementary school students in grades 1 through 6. Their awareness level of the prolonged sound rules was evaluated on reading tasks composed of 40 words and sentences. An one-way ANOVA followed by Scheffe hoc tests showed the showed the statistically significant difference between the groups for the awareness level of prolonged sound rules. The younger the children, the larger differences in the awareness of prolonged sound rules. The awareness might affect their cognitive development and a systematic instruction may be helpful especially in lower graders. In conclusion, the findings of this study showed significant differences in the awareness level of the prolonged sound rules at both words and sentences level. It was also found that as the age of children increases, the awareness level of the prolonged sound rules tends to increase which appeared to be completed by the 3rd grade.

  • After reading a document, people construct a concept about the information they consumed and merge multiple words to set up keywords that represent the material. With that in mind, this study suggests a smarter and more efficient keyword extraction method wherein scholarly journals are used as the basis for the establishment of production rules based on a concept information of words appearing in a document in a way in which author-provided keywords are functional although they do not appear in the body of the document. This study presents a new way to determine the importance of each keyword, excluding non-relevant keywords. To identify the validity of extracted keywords, titles and abstracts of journals about natural language and auditory language were collected for analysis. The comparison of author-provided keywords with the keyword results of the developed system showed that the developed system was highly useful, with an accuracy rate as good as up to 96%.

  • This paper explores the nature of multiple sluicing in English, which has two or more remnant wh-phrases in clause edge position. At the beginning part of the paper we argue against Nishigauchi's (1998) and Lasnik's (2007) Gapping analysis of multiple sluicing, which says that two remnant wh-phrases each actually occupies the left and right edge of a clause, with the in-between string of words undergoing Gapping. We rather argue that multiple sluicing in English is the same kind as found in Bulgarian and Serbo-Croatian. In other words, multiple sluicing in English is also derived by multiple wh-fronting which otherwise does not apply. We demonstrate that some important properties of the construction noted by Lmultiple sluicing, multiple wh-movement/fronting, sluicing, TP/IP-deletion, asnik (2007) under the Gapping approach to it can be accounted for in a principled way by our proposed analysis.
