  • In this letter, we propose a novel printed helix antenna for RFID reader in UHF band. The printed strip line of the antenna is first wound up outside a polygonal shaped layer and then the winding continues on an inner layer to control the overall gain and the radiation pattern. In addition, the winding pitch angles on each layer have either negative or positive values resulting in the broad CP bandwidth. The detail structure of the antenna was optimized using Pareto genetic algorithm(GA), so as to obtain excellent performances for RFID reader antennas. The optimized two-layered polygonal helix was fabricated on the cardboard of a flexible substrate and the performances were measured and compared with the simulations. The fabricated antenna was made up of copper tape which can adhere to a flexible cardboard and had 21.4 % matching bandwidth, 31.9 % CP bandwidth, readable range of $5.5m^2$ with kr=3.2. Also based on the current distribution of the strip line of the antenna and sensitivity of the antenna bents points, we confirmed that the antenna has the quarter-wave transformer near the feed for the broad matching bandwidth and radiates the traveling wave for the broad CP bandwidth using the bent strip line.

  • In this paper, we considered a design method of a circular polarization (CP) antenna for UHF (ultra high frequency) RFID (Radio Frequency IDentification) readers. The antenna is a dual-fed circular microstrip patch which produces right-handed CP. Quadrature hybrid coupler is used for dual feeding. The outputs of the coupler and circular patch are connected through copper wires, and the inductive reactance produced by the connecting wires is compensated by a ring-shaped slot inserted inside the circular patch. The effects of the geometrical parameters of the proposed antenna on the antenna performance are examined, and the parameters are adjusted to be suitable for the operation in North American UHF RFID band (902-928 MHz), which includes domestic UHF RFID band. The antenna is fabricated, and the experiment results reveal a frequency band of 854-993 MHz for a voltage standing wave ratio < 2. The fabricated antenna is connected to a commercial RFID reader, and it showed a good performance of tag identification.

  • In this paper, the single coaxial fed and circularly polarized patch antenna for the RFID system in 2.45GHz ISM band has been fabricated. The simulation by HFSS, electro-magnetic field simulator was executed in order to decide the location of feed which is difficult to be analysed. The simulated result has the same tendency as the measured one in the view of input impedance with the variation of feed location. VSWR of fabricated antenna is low($\leq$1.2) even in comparatively high dielectric loss epoxy substrate(FR4), and this value is enough for the application of RFID reader antenna.

  • This paper presents a balun consisting of a T-junction, a Right/Left Handed Transmission line(RLH-TL), and a conventional Right Handed(RH) line. It is assumed that the RLH-TL consists of N unit-cells. We provide closed-form solutions and design a very compact wideband(80 %) balun using CPW lines based on the obtained solutions. Then, we propose a capacitively loaded loop antenna designed for a uniform current distribution. The antenna resistance of the proposed antenna at resonance is about 204 ohms. The length of the unit cell is about $\lambda/12$(total length: $1\;\lambda$). The magnetic field generated from the proposed antenna is stronger than that of the conventional one by as much as 20 dB. We used a coplanar strip line(CPS) to combine the loop antenna and balun. The proposed antenna may be used as a near field UHF RFID reader antenna.

  • In this paper, we present novel high-speed transmission schemes for high-speed ultra-high frequency (UHF) radio-frequency identification communication. For high-speed communication, tags communicate with a reader using a high-speed Miller (HS-Miller) encoding and multiple antennas, and a reader communicates with tags using extended pulse-interval encoding (E-PIE). E-PIE can provide up to a two-fold faster data rate than conventional pulse-interval encoding. Using HS-Miller encoding and orthogonal multiplexing techniques, tags can achieve a two- to three-fold faster data rate than Miller encoding without degrading the demodulation performance at a reader. To verify the proposed transmission scheme, the MATLAB/Simulink model for high-speed backscatter based on an HS-Miller modulated subcarrier has been designed and simulated. The simulation results show that the proposed transmission scheme can achieve more than a 3 dB higher BER performance in comparison to a Miller modulated subcarrier.

  • A 900-MHz band transceiver has been developed for RFID reader applications. In the transmitter, a GaAs SPST switch is used for high speed switching and low power consumption. In the receiver, a double balanced mixer is used to compress even-harmonic products. The ASK demodulator which consists of an active filter and comparator is used to reject the unwanted in band interferers. The transceiver produces a maximum transmitting power of 30 dBm and exhibits an 5 m communication range with a 6-dBi gain antenna.

  • In this paper, we investigated the recognition range according to modulation index for the ISO(International Standards Organization) 14443 13.56MHz contactless Type B RFID(Radio Frequency IDentification) system. We measured recognition range with changing modulation index step by step from 5% to 24% where we used 4 samples of Type B transponder with different resonance frequencies between 13.838MHz and 17.200MHz. While gradually increasing a distance in vertical direction from the center of the reader antenna, we measured the distance where the transponder's PUPI(Pseudo Unique PICC(Proximity IC Card) Identifier) is recognized continuously during 10 seconds and the distance where the transponder's PUPI is recognized at least two times during 5 seconds. From the measurement results, we found that the best recognition ranges were achieved when the reader had modulation index between 11% and 14%.

  • RFID(Radio Frequency Identification) is one of key technologies in ubiquitous computing. RFID system comprises tag, reader, and computer application. The tag is a small electronic chip, which is attached to a thing such as item, pallet, container. The reader has an tiny antenna obtaining the identification information of the things by radio frequency, and provides the information to the computer application for a business. In this paper we have proposed the military application of RFID and its implementation policy for the Korean armed forces. We believe that The principle application area would be logistics TAV(total asset visibility) and resource management, and the implementation should be achieved step by step considering the advancement of RFID technology and government policy.

  • This paper shows a feasibility analysis results on RFID for car positioning system. Usually, a car navigation is mainly based on GPS combined with map-matching. However, in the case of poor visibility of satellites, GPS can not supply accurate position information continuously. In recent years, RFID has been considered to be one of key technologies in positioning and localization area. But its application and research results in the area of vehicular positioning are not popular. RFID system consists of tag, reader, antenna and software such as drivers and middleware. The main function of RFID system in a vehicular positioning is to retrieve ID recorded position information from tags which set on the center of road. We propose a positioning method for vehicles using RFID and we present some indoor and outdoor experiment results to show that the proposed method is available in vehicle operational environments.
