  • By using Si CMOS process, small RFID tag antenna were fabricated on Si substrate and their electrical properties were evaluated. Firstly, tag antenna pattern and the electromagnetic properties were simulated with HFSS. The frequency was 13.56 MHz, the line-width and line-gap were modeled in the range of $50{\sim}200{\mu}m$. S parameters, SRF, and Q value were calculated from geometry. When the line-width and line-gap were $100{\mu}m$ and $100 {\mu}m$, respectively and the loop-turn was 10, the SRF was 80 MHZ and the Q value was ca. 9. When the microstrip antenna pattern of aluminum $2{\mu}m$ was fabricated by using DC sputtering, Vpp of ca. 4.3 V was obtained when the reader and tag were closely contacted.

  • This paper proposes an efficient localization algorithm in the RFID sensor space for the precise localization of a mobile robot. The RFID sensor space consists of embedded sensors and a mobile robot. The embedded sensors, that is tags are holding the absolute position data and provide them to the robot which carries a reader and requests the absolute position fur localization. The reader, it is called as antenna usually, gets several tag data at the same time within its readable range. It takes time to read all the tags and to process the data to estimate the position, which is a major factor to deteriorate the localization accuracy. In this paper, an efficient algorithm to estimate the position and orientation of the mobile robot as quickly as possible has been proposed. Along with the algorithm, a new allocation of the tags in the RFID sensor space is also proposed to improve the localization accuracy. The proposed algorithms are demonstrated and verified through the real experiments.

  • RFID tag is detected by an RFID antenna and information is read from the tag detected, by an RFID reader. RFID tag detection by an RFID reader is very important at the deployment stage. Tag detection is influenced by factors such as tag direction on a target object, speed of a conveyer moving the object, and the contents of an object. The water content of the object absorbs radio waves at high frequencies, typically approximately 900 MHz, resulting in unstable tag signal power. Currently, finding the best conditions for factors influencing the tag detection requires very time consuming work at deployment. Thus, a quick and simple RFID tag detection scheme is needed to improve the current time consuming trial-and-error experimental method. This paper proposes a back-propagation learning-based RFID tag detection prediction scheme, which is intelligent and has the advantages of ease of use and time/cost savings. The results of simulation with the proposed scheme demonstrate a high prediction accuracy for tag detection on a water content, which is comparable with the current method in terms of time/cost savings.

  • This paper proposed a new transponder detection method to reduce tag recognition time and simplify anti-collision process in RFID systems. In conventional systems, a transponder in detectable area is passively recognized by responding to a reader command. In addition, if there are multiple tags in the area, a collision between tags occurs by responding at the same time to a command and anti-collision process begins. In the proposed method, tags are actively recognized without any command from a reader which results to reducing a tag recognition time and simplifying anti-collision process. To compare transponder recognition time, the process of transponder recognition in conventional systems is analysed. A circuit to detect transponder directly is developed and antenna voltage variation of a reader in the appearance of multiple transponders is analysed for the implementation of the proposed method.

  • RFID technology has evolved from basic operation like the acquisition of tag IDs into a more complicated operation such as the simultaneous acquisition of tag IDs and their positions and recently, is raising the possibility of obtaining additional informations, which include their velocities, directions and distances. In this paper, we present a RFID system that can fullfil aforementioned advanced functions. In the proposed system, a tag transmits a sequence of FMCW pulses modulated by ID signals and a reader separates the tag signals in azimuth direction using an array antenna, followed by the FMCW demodulation from which distances, velocities as well as the tag IDs are extracted. We propose a receiver structure of the reader and theoretically analyze its operability. Moreover, its performance is examined by simulation.

  • Since 9.11 terrorist attacks against the USA, the new paradigm for "supply chain security" has been established. And at the same time a lot of researches are being made on supply chain security by many foreign companies or research institutes. However, domestically the terms "supply chain security" themselves are not yet familiar, and the paradigm of security are not being used in the logistics, while little researches are being made on them But recently along with development of "ConTracer," a supply chain security technology, which is to be used as the equipment for container cargo transportation safety based on RF1D technology, related researches have begun to be activated. The key issues for the development of equipment for container transportation safety are to obtain both a high recognition rate and enough recognition distance. To this end, this study has tested the ConTracer (433 MHz type and 2.4 GHz type) by using Taguchi Method. According to our test results, in the case of 433 MHz type, it is a little more effective that the reader faces to the front-right side, and in the case of 2.4 GHz, reader direction does not make difference in the view of sensitivity. The test also has proved that it is better that antenna location, as expected, is to be installed on the outside for both types alike.

  • The paper introduces the an necklace type UHF RFID tag for a live tree having high dielectric constant. When a general UHF RFID tag is used for the metal and the material with high dielectric constant, the electrical characteristics and impedance of antenna have been changed, and the tag is not recognized by an UHF RFID reader. The necklace type UHF RFID tag has been designed with consideration of the high dielectric constant of the tree material. The name tag for a live tree has been designed with the developed tag antenna. The performance of tag has been measured and the reading range is about 4~5m. The developed UHF RFID tag antenna can be applied to any high dielectric material for various industrial applications.

  • In the RFID system, one of the important criteria of tag antenna performance is the detection distance. The most important factor determining the detection distance of the tag antenna is the Radar Cross Sections(RCS). In this paper, we propose a method to simply measure the RCS of the RFID tag antenna using two reader antennas(Tx and Rx) and a network analyzer. We estimate RCS' from the RCS equation based on the measured $S_{21}$ using the network analyzer. We compare the measured $S_{21}$ values with the calculated $S_{21}$ values and the simulated $S_{21}$ values using EM simulator. The used tag antennas are two kinds of dipole-type, metal-type, and an inductively-coupled type ones. In case of the dipole type, the measured, simulated and calculated values of the RCS are almost the same. In case of other types, we obtain the measured RCS values with a difference of about 3 dB.

  • In a passive UHF RFID system, the impedance matching between tag antenna and chip as well as the protocol parameter settings in a reader plays important role in determination of the maximum read-range. Almost no paper, however, has dealt with the above issues in relation with the maximum read range. In this paper, two known methods (of using the value from data sheets and proprietary RFID tester) and our proposing method in chip impedance evaluation are compared in terms of maximum read range. The read range of tags whose antenna impedance is conjugate matched with the chip impedance obtained from the proposed method is improved maximum 73 % more than that of tags from the other methods.

  • Recently, RFID(Radio Frequency IDentification) market spread in industry region is entering a phase of stagnation due to cost issue. RFID tag inlay cost has become relatively more expensive due to the recent decrease in chip price. Therefore, a simple and rapid design technique for RFID tag has yet to be implemented to achieve low cost. This paper presents a design technique considering chip impedance for antenna design for improved accuracy and computation time. As a result, it is confirmed that analysis error for resonance ranges within 20MHz and readable range error falls within 1.5m.
