  • This work is concerned with the improvement of the productivity and the product quality in the polymerization reactors by using model-on-demand predictive control(MoDPC). This technique is applied to a continuous styrene polymerization reactor and a semibatch methyl methacrylate (MMA)/vinyl acetate(VAc) copolymerization reactor. The regress is constructed with the most influential variables the conversion and the jacket inlet temperature for the styrene polymerization reactor, and the free volume and the reactor temperature for the MMA/VAc copolymerization reactor through open loop operations. From the simulation results for setpoint tracking and disturbance rejection problems, it is demonstrated that the MoDPC shows ...

  • This study was carried out to investigate the treatment efficiency of sequencing batch reactor when the livestock nightsoil organic loading rate was varied. Sequencing batch reactor was operated with the variance of influent BOD concentration and operating cycle. The average influent BOD concentrations in this study were 150 mg/l, 200 mg/l, 250 mg/l, 300 mg/l, 350 mg/l, 400 mg/l, 450 mg/l and 500 mg/l in the condition of 1~3 cycles/day. The treatment efficiency of sequencing batch reactor is good at the volumetric loading of 0.05~0.20 kg $BOD/m^3\cdot day$. Therefore, sequencing batch reactor process would become an effective alternative for the process of small scale livestock nightsoil treatment plants.

  • The objective of this study is to review the basic theories related substrate removal in wastewater flow variations using submerged biofilm reactor. An aerated biofilm reactor is that in which influent organic substrates are aerobically oxidized by the microorganisms of biofilm grown on the surface of submerged media. No sludge is returned, and oxygen is supplied by diffusers. Three types of aerated biofilm reactor are one stage-central aeration, one stageup flow aeration and two stage-side aeration. The orders of substrate removal capacity in wastewater flow variations showed two stage-side aeration, one stage-upflow aeration and one stage-central aeration. The phenonmenon of nonclosing volid in upflow aeration type was superior to these in central-side aeration type. Attached biofilm masses in case of upflow, side and central aeration reactor were 1.0mg/cm$^2$, 4.1 mg/cm$^2$ and 0.93 mg/cm$^2$, respectively. Yield coefficient for biofilm was 0.31 to 0.48. Especially, removal efficiency can be increased remarkably according to the number of biofilm reactor and the packed condition of media.

  • The purpose of this research is to develop the high performance of solar chemical reactor for producing hydrogen by methane reforming reaction with steam. Two shape of chemical reactor is suggested: first type is filled with porous material and second type is spiral type. These reactors is installed on the dish-type thermal system of Inha University, Inha Dish-1. Performance analysis of these two reactors is conducted from getting methane conversion.

  • This paper reviews the fast reactor physics and computational methods. The basic reactor physics specific to fast spectrum reactors are briefly reviewed, focused on fissile material breeding and actinide burning. Design implications and reactivity feedback characteristics are compared between breeder and burner reactors. Some discussions are given to the distinct nuclear characteristics of fast reactors that make the assumptions employed in traditional LWR analysis methods not applicable. Reactor physics analysis codes used for the modeling of fast reactor designs in the U.S. are reviewed. This review covers cross-section generation capabilities, whole-core deterministic (diffusion and transport) and Monte Carlo calculation tools, depletion and fuel cycle analysis codes, perturbation theory codes for reactivity coefficient calculation and cross section sensitivity analysis, and uncertainty analysis codes.

  • Performance of a steam reformer can be improved by using a coaxial cylindrical reactor, because the design can enhance the heat transfer for the steam reforming reaction, which is the one of main rate-determining steps of overall reactions. The objective of this study is to investigate the coaxial cylindrical reactor numerically. Pseudo-homogeneous model and one medium approach are incorporated for the chemical reactions, and models are validated with experimental results. The catalyst of the coaxial cylindrical reactor is 67% for one of the cylindrical reactor, but fuel conversion of the coaxial cylindrical reactor is increased by 10%. Heat flux profiles are investigated by modified Nusselt number and heat flux which is transported from the product gas to the catalyst bed affecting performance of the steam reformer.

  • A numerical analysis is conducted to estimate the core expansion and the energy behaviors induced by a core disruptive accident in a sodium-cooled fast reactor. The numerical formulation based on underwater explosion theory is carried out to simulate the core explosion inside the reactor vessel. The transient pressure, temperature and expansion of the core are examined by solving the equation of state and nonlinear governing equation of momentum conservation in one-dimensional spherical coordinates. The energy balance inside the computation domain is examined during the core expansion process. Heat transfer between the core and the sodium coolant, and the bubble rise during the expansion process are briefly investigated.

  • Main coolant pump (MCP) is a canned-motor-type axial pump to circulate the primary coolant between nuclear fuel rods and steam generators in an integral type reactor. The reactor is designed to operate under condition of 310 oC and 14.7 MPa. Thus MCP has to be tested under same operating condition as reactor design condition in order to verify its performance and safety. In present work, a test loop to simulate real operating situation of the reactor has been designed and constructed to test MCP. And then, as a part of qualification test, canned motor functional test and pump hydraulic performance test have been carried out upon a prototype MCP. Canned motor efficiency and pump hydraulic characteristics including homologous curves and NPSH curves were obtained from the qualification test.

  • In a low aspect ratio (LAR) tokamak reactor with a superconducting toroidal field (TF) coil, the radial build of TF coil and the shield play a key role in determining the size of a reactor. For self-consistent determination of the reactor components and physics parameters, a system analysis code is coupled with one-dimensional radiation transport code. Conceptual design study of a compact superconducting LAR tokamak reactor with aspect ratio less than 2.5 was conducted and the optimum radial build was identified. It is shown that the use of an improved shielding material and high temperature superconducting magnets with high critical current density opens up the possibility of a fusion power plant with compact size and small re-circulating power simultaneously at low aspect ratio, and that by using an inboard neutron reflector instead of breeding blanket, tritium self-sufficiency is possible with outboard blanket only and thus compact sized reactor is viable.

  • The shaft seal of the reactor coolant pump is installed on the upper side of the rotating shaft of the pump to seal the reactor coolant from flowing out between the rotating shaft and the non-rotating parts. In this study, the loading conditions for the normal operation and faulted conditions are identified and structural integrity evaluation is performed using the finite element stress analysis for the sealing apparatus of the APR 1400 reactor coolant pump. It is confirmed that the stress analysis results satisfy the design criteria at all loading conditions.
