This paper describes a transformerless static synchronous campensator (STATCOM) system based on cascade H-bridge multilevel inverter with star configuration. It is designed not only for the dynamic and continuous compensation of the reactive power but also for the improvement of power quality of existing wind power plant. Especially, when the induction generator of wind turbine is directly connected to the grid, reactive power are occurred by exiting current. so a reactive power compensation system based on the cascade H-bridge multilevel STATCOM is proposed because the output power quality and controllability of reactive power are required by grid code in many different countries. Using various The proposed reactive power control strategy using a STATCOM is compared with the conventional scheme using fixed-size of capacitor bank through various simulation results.

The wind power plant must be able to produce reactive power at the POI bus of a wind farm connected to power system to keep or control the voltage of POI bus. But, the reactive power capability of wind turbines may not be sufficient to control the voltage of POI bus due to the reactive power losses in connection lines between wind farm and POI bus. The solution of this problem is to install an external STATCOM. The proposed cooperative control method of STATCOM and conventional reactive power compensators such as Switched-shunt and tap changing transformer can control the voltage of POI bus more efficiently. The simulation results are shown that the voltage drop of POI Bus of Test System with the arbitrary load change rate to initial loads is improved more than 60% and the voltage of load bus is maintained more than 95% of rated voltage.
This paper presents a study on the application of Asynchronous Team(A-Team) theory for QVC(Reactive power control) and security assessment in a power system. Reactive power control problem is the one of optimally establishing voltage level given reactive power sources, which is very important problem to supply the demand without interruption and needs methods to alleviate a bus voltage limit violation more quickly. It can be formulated as a mixed-integer linear programming(MILP) problem without deteriorating of solution accuracy to a certain extent. The security assessment is to estimate the relative robustness of the system and deterministic approach based on AC load flow calculations is adopted to assess it, especially voltage security. A distance measure, as a measurement for voltage security, is introduced. In order to analyze the above two problem, reactive power control and static security assessment, In an integrated fashion, a new organizational structure, called an A-team, is adopted. An A-team is well-suited to the development of computer-based, multi-agent systems for operation of large-scaled power systems. In order to verify the usefulness of the suggested scheme herein, modified IEEE 30 bus system is employed as a sample system. The results of a case study are also presented.
This paper presents an active and reactive power compensator for the wind power system with squirrel-cage induction generator. The developed system is able to continuously compensate the active and reactive power. The 3-phase inverter operates for the compensation of reactive power, while the DC/DC converter with super-capacitors operates for the compensation of active power. The proposed compensator can be expected that developed system may be used to compensated the abrupt power variation due to sudden change of wind speed or sudden power-drop by tower effect. It can be also applied for the distributed generation and the Micro-Grid.

Recent years voltage collapse phenomenon have a great attention to power system engineers. As the system size increases the voltage problem shows a very complicated and the reactive power contol problem becomes more difficult. This paper gives an efficient methods for calculating voltage collapse proximity index based on the reactive power loss sensitivity and real power loss sensitivity. The system voltages are tightly associated with the system reactive power, so the proposed voltage collapse proximity index is very usefull for the system voltage control problems. Numerical examples showed a good and reliable results.
A novel hybrid active power filter (NHAPF) that can be adopted in high-voltage systems is proposed in this paper. The topological structure and filtering principle of the compensating system is provided and analyzed, respectively. Different controlling strategies are also presented to select the suitable strategy for the compensation system. Based on the selected strategy, the harmonic suppression function is used to analyze the influence of system parameters on the compensating system with MATLAB. Moreover, parameters in the injection branch are designed and analyzed. The performance of the proposed NHAPF in harmonic suppression and reactive power compensation is simulated with PSim. Thereafter, the overall control method is proposed. Simulation analysis and real experiments show that the proposed NHAPF exhibits good harmonic suppression and reactive power compensation. The proposed compensated system is based on the three-phase four-switch inverter, which is inexpensive, and the control method is verified for validity and effectiveness.
In recent years, much attention has been paid to the voltage collapse phenomena. There has been reported many cases about the voltage collapse in many countries. These voltage collapse phenomena are known as the event that can occur due to reactive power deficits. This paper proposes an efficient method that can pursue the reactive power loss changes and gives the simple voltage collapse proximity indicator(VCPI) based on the reactive power loss sensitivities using optimal techniques. By comparing reactive power loss sensitivity with active power loss sensitivity, it is also proved that VCPI based on reactive power loss sensitivities is more effective. The developed VCPI is derived from the Jacobian matrix of Load Flow and the computational burden is very low and on-line implementation is possible. The proposed method is applied to a IEEE-14 bus test system and reliable and promising results are obtained.
An increasing concern is paid to short-term voltage stability with the growth of penetration of induction motor loads. Reactive power reserve(RPR) of power system is critical to improve voltage stability. A definition of short-term voltage stability-related RPR(SVRPR) is proposed. Generators vary their contributions to voltage stability with their location and system condition, etc. Voltage support coefficient based on the second-order trace sensitivity method is proposed to evaluate SVRPR's contribution to short-term voltage stability. The evaluation method can account for the generator's reactive support in transient process and the contingency severity. Then an optimization model to improve short-term voltage stability is built. To deal with multiple contingencies, contingency weight taking into account both its probability and severity is proposed. The optimization problem is solved by primal dual interior point method. Testing on IEEE_39 bus system, it is indicated that the method proposed is effective. Short-term voltage stability is improved significantly by the way of SVRPR optimization. Hence, the approach can be used to prevent the happening of voltage collapse during system's contingency.
This paper suggests local voltage control method to achieve coordinative control between STATCOM and other reactive power resources, such as Shunt Capacitor/Reactors and OLTC. Voltage/Reactive power control has various difficult aspects to control because of analysis and system dynamics error. This control method suggests practical algorithm regarding system voltage and reactive power status which is easy to implement in substation basis. In normal status, STATCOM-Shunts-OOTC are in operation. In emergency status, OLTC is locked. This algorithm is tested and verified in EMTDC.
