  • SnS-$TiO_2$ nanocomposites are synthesized using simple, cheap, and less toxic $SnCl_2$ as the tin (II) precursor. The prepared nanoparticles are characterized using powder X-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and UV-Vis diffuse reflectance spectra (DRS). The XRD and TEM results indicate that the prepared product has SnS nanoparticles and a grain diameter of 30 nm. The DRS demonstrate that SnS-$TiO_2$ possesses the absorption profile across the entire visible light region. The generation of reactive oxygen species is detected through the oxidation reaction from 1,5-diphenyl carbazide (DPCI) to 1,5-diphenyl carbazone (DPCO). It is found that the photocurrent density and photocatalytic effect increase with the modified SnS. Excellent catalytic degradation of Texbrite BA-L (TBA) solution is observed using the SnS-$TiO_2$ composites under visible light irradiation. It is proposed that both the strong visible light absorption and the multiple exciton excitations contribute to the high visible light photocatalytic activity.

  • Power conversion systems used in large gas turbine power plant can be divided into two main part. Because of the initial start-up characteristic of the gas turbine combustor, the gas turbine must be accelerated by starting device(LCI : Load Commutated Inverter) up to 10%~20% of rated speed to ignite it. In addition, the ECS(Excitation Control system) is used to control the rotor field current and reactive power in grid-connected synchronous generator. These two large power conversion systems are located in the same space(container) because of coordination control. Recently, many manufactures develop high speed controller based on function block available in the LCI and ECS with the newest power semiconductor. We also developed high speed controller based on function block to be using these two system and it meets the international standard IEC61131 as using real-time OS(VxWorks) and ISaGRAF. In order to install easily these systems at power plant, main controller, special module and IO module are used with high speed communication line other than electric wire line. Before initial product is installed on the site, prototype is produced and tests are conducted for it. The performance results of Integrated controller and application program(SFC, ECS) were described in this paper. The test results will be considered as the important resources for the application in future.

  • The total phenolic contents and antioxidative activities of the ethanol and methanol extracts from 9 Korean medicinal herbs were tested for the application of skin care products such as soaf and lotion. For the evaluation of antioxidative activity of the extract the method of electron donating ability with resolution reagent DPPH(1 ,1-diphenyl-2-picryl hydrazyl) and TBARS (Thiobarbituric acid reactive substances) value were used in comparison with α-tocopherol and BHA. As the results, the total phenolic contents of the extracts calculated as chlorogenic acid were ranged from 0.063-0.124 mg/ml. All the medicinal plant extracts showed some appreciable antioxidative effects. Among them, Zanthoxylum piperitum, Cinnamomum cassia and Caesalpinia sappan were shown to have relatively high antioxidative effects comparable with BHA and α-tocopherol..

  • In recent years, there has been a globally increasing application of herbal medicines and dietary supplements to treat various chronic diseases and to promote health. However, there are increasing clinical reports on the organ toxicities associated with consumption of herbal medicines. In general, most xenobiotics are metabolized by Phase I reaction(the main enzyme : cytochrome P450) and Phase II reaction. However, reactive oxygen species, free radicals and electrophils are produced inevitably during xenobiotics metabolism. These toxic species and metabolites are increased whenever the endogenous substances and enzymes for Phase II reaction not available. In addition, herbal-drug interactions are pharmacokinetic, with most actually or theoretically affecting the metabolism of the affected product by way of the cytochrome P450 enzymes. This review updated the knowledge on metabolic activation of herbal components and its clinical and toxicological implications. Also, the possible way for preventing the side-effects by herbal-medicine use was suggested.

  • This cycloaddition of [70]fullerene with methyl azidoacetate in benzene under ultrasonic irradiated condition afforded the closed [5,6]-bridged aziridino[70]fullerene derivative, which was unusual product of cycloaddition to the 5,6-junction of fullerene. Its structure was determined by FAB-MS, UV-vis, $^1H-$ and $^{13}C$-NMR spectral data. The closed [5,6]-bridged aziridino[70]fullerene-functionalized gold nanoparticle films were self-assembled using the layer-by-layer method on the reactive of glass slides functionalized with 3-mercaptopropyl trimethoxysilane. The functionalized glass slides were alternately soaked in the solution containing closed the [5,6]-bridged aziridino[70]fullerene and 4-aminothiophenoxide/hexanethiolate-protected gold nanoparticles. The closed [5,6]-bridged aziridino[70]fullerene-functionalized gold nanoparticle films have grown up to 5 layers depending on the immersion time. The self-assembled nanoparticle multilayer films were characterized using UV-vis spectroscopy showed that the surface plasmon band of gold at 527 nm gradually became more evident as successive layers were added to the films.

  • Singlet oxygen ($^1O_2$) is highly reactive form of molecular oxygen that may harm living systems by oxidizing critical cellular macromolecules. The oxyR gene product regulates the expression of the enzymes and proteins that are needed for cellular protection against oxidative stress. In this study, the role of oxyR in cellular defense against a singlet oxygen was investigated using Escherichia coli oxyR mutant strains. Upon exposure to methylene blue and visible light, which generates singlet oxygen, the oxyR overexpression mutant was much more resistant to singlet oxygen-mediated cellular damage when compared to the oxyR deletion mutant in regard to growth kinetics, viability and protein oxidation. Induction and inactivation of major antioxidant enzymes, such as superoxide desmutase and catalase, were observed after their exposure to a singlet oxygen generating system in both oxyR strains. However, the oxyR overexpression mutant maintained significantly higher activities of anticxidant enzymes than did the oxyR deletion mutant. These results suggest that the oxyR regulon plays an important protective role in singlet oxygen-mediated cellular damage, presumably through the protection of antioxidant enzymes.

  • A new type of the human TSA homologous gene was cloned from a HeLa cell cDNA and characterized. The gene product consists of 161 amino acids with a molecular mass of 16,900. The TSA homologous protein, as a new 6th member of the human TSA (hTSA VI), exerted a thioldependent peroxidase activity with the use of thioredoxin system as a physiological electron donor. The values of $V_{max}/K_m$ of hTSA VI for $H_2O_2$ and t-butyl hydroperoxide (t-BOOH) were calculated as $5.53{\times}10^{-2}$ and $3.70{\times}10^{-2}$, respectively. This implies that hTSA VI is a peroxidase, which reduces $H_2O_2$ and t-BOOH. The mutation of $Cys^{47}$ to serine resulted in a complete loss of the peroxidase activity. This suggests that $Cys^{47}$ acts as a primary site of catalysis. The analysis of the tryptic digest derived from hTSA VI revealed that the $Cys^{47}$ exists as a free thiol form. Taken together, these results suggest that the TSA homologous protein is a new type of the human family, which exerts thioredoxin-linked peroxidase activity toward $H_2O_2$ and alkyl hydroperoxide.

  • Reactive oxygen species damage biomolecules such as lipids, proteins, sugars and DNA, which can not only lead to various disease but also oxidative damage resulting aging. In order to search for antioxidants from plants, the antioxidant effects of the MeOH extracts from 182 plants were evaluated. The results showed that thirteen plant extracts exhibited antioxidant activity (>80%) in DPPH radical assay, seven plant extracts demonstrated antioxidant activity (>40%) in the hydroxyl radical assay and eighteen plant extracts were active (>80%) in the lipid peroxidation assay. In particular, the extracts of Distylium racemosum (Hamamelidaceae), Astilbe koreana (Saxifragaceae), Astilbe chinensis and Euphorbia supina (Euphorbiaceae) were identified as potent principles of antioxidant activity in all the assay systems.

  • Tectorigenin has an apoptosis-inducing ability and immunosuppressive activity. We investigated the effect of tectorigenin on Phase I and II enzyme activities to elucidate the pharmacological action of the immunosuppressive tectorigenin in the diabetic rat. This compound was obtained from the hydrolysis of tetoridin isolated from the flower of Pueraria thumbergiana (Leguminosae). This crude drug (Puerariae Flos) has been used as a therapeutic for diabetes mellitus in traditional Korean medicine. Tecotrigenin inhibited the formation of malondialdehyde (MDA) and hydroxy radicals in serum and liver but promoted superoxide dismutase (SOD) activity. Low MDA contents and low xanthine oxidase and aldehyde oxidase activities were observed in the tectorigenin-treated rats, suggesting that such Phase I enzyme activities are the major source of lipid peroxidation. However, tectorigenin increased Phase II enzyme activities such as SOD, glutathione peroxidase and catalase, suggesting the activation of free radical-scavenging enzymes. The activities of tectorigenin were comparable to those of glibenclamide, which was employed as a positive control. These results suggest that tectorigenin may share some biological properties with glibenclamide in insulin-dependent-diabetes mellitus (IDDM).
