  • Ultra high performance concrete (UHPC) consists of cement, silica fume (SF), sand, fibers, water and superplasticizer. Typical water/binder-ratios are 0.15-0.20 with 20-30% of silica fume. The development off properties of hardening UHPC relates with both hydration of cement and pozzolanic reaction of silicafume. In this paper, by considering the production of calcium hydroxide in cement hydration and its consumption in the pozzolanic reaction, a numerical model is proposed to simulate the hydration of UHPC. The degree of hydration of cement and degree of reaction of silica fume are obtained as accompanied results from the proposed hydration model. The properties of hardening UHPC, such as degree of hydration of cement, calcium hydroxide contents, and compressive strength, are predicted from the contribution of cement hydration and pozzolanic reaction. The proposed model is verified through experimental data on concrete with different water-to-binder ratios and silica fume substitution ratios.

  • In this study, carbon conversion was measured using an electronic mass balance. In a lab scale furnace, each coal sample was pyrolyzed in a nitrogen environment and became coal char, which was then gasified with steam under isothermal conditions. The reactivity of coal char was investigated at various temperatures and steam concentrations. The VRM(volume reaction model), SCM(shrinking core model), and RPM(random pore model) were used to interpret experimental data. For each model the activation energy(Ea), pre-exponential factor (A), and reaction order(n) of the coal char-steam reaction were determined by applying the Arrhenius equation into the data obtained with thermo-gravimetric analysis(TGA). According to this study, it was found that experimental data agreed better with the VRM and SCM for 1,000 and $1,100^{\circ}C$, and the RPM for 1,200 and $1,300^{\circ}C$. The reactivity of chars increased with the increase of gasification temperature. The structure parameter(${\psi}$) of the surface area for the RPM was obtained.

  • The direct carbon fuel cell (DCFC) has attracted researcher's attention recently, due to its high conversion efficiency and its abundant fuel, carbon. A DCFC mathematical model has developed in two-dimensional, lab-scale, and considers Boudouard reaction and carbon monoxide (CO) oxidation. The model simulates the CO production by Boudouard reaction and additional electron production by CO oxidation. The Boudouard equilibrium strongly depends on operating temperature and affects the amount of produced CO and consequentially affects the overall fuel cell performance. Two different operating temperatures (973 K, 1023 K) has been calculated to discover the CO production by Boudouard reaction and overall fuel cell performance. Moreover, anode thickness of the cell has been considered to find out the influence of the Boudouard reaction zone in fuel cell performance. It was found that in high temperature operating DCFC modeling, the Boudouard reaction cannot be neglected and has a vital role in the overall fuel cell performance.

  • When blocks are supported on a dock, huge reaction forces concentrated at the supports cause structural damage owing to local stress concentrations. Thus, the supports should be arranged to avoid local failure from the reaction forces by redistributing those forces. Docking analyses to determine the proper blocks and their support arrangements are introduced so that the local stresses are minimized to warrant the safety of the docking supports. Local stresses enforced by the support arrangement should be evaluated by finite element analysis (FEA). However, it is difficult to consider an accurate 3D geometry of the blocks in the finite element model because the structural design information is too complicated to determine within several days using the FEA model. This paper presents a simplified FE model to evaluate the safety of the arrangement of supports using a simplified grillage element. The grillage element can be efficiently used to obrain the reaction forces in docking analysis becasuse the reaction forces at the supports are enough to assess the safety of block. Since a simplified grillage model of the entire ship cannot accurately calculate the local stresses, an optimized modeling method based on the grillage element was introduced. The local reaction forces obtained by the proposed approach and three-dimensional FEA were discussed for typical types of ships. It is shown that the reaction forces obtained by the present grillage model are in reasonably good agreement with the FEA model.

  • The effect of lipoxygenase (LOX) on the oxidation and co-oxidation of lipid fraction was studied in the model system of rainbow trout. For the reaction in model system 1 g of lipid fraction and 50mL of enzyme extract(LOX, 140 unit in 50mL phosphate buffer solution at pH 7,4)), which were obtained from rainbow trout, were homoginized in the presence of Tween 20 and kept at 23$\circ$C for 3 days. The activity of LOX was decreased to 43% of initial level during the reaction in the model system. The initial composition of rainbow trout lipid was showed to be consisted of trigliceride(TG;82%) and free fatty acid(FFA;0.1%), while this converted to 59% of TG and 20% of FIFA, respectively after reaction in model system. Change of fatty acid composition was also observed and the content of linoleic acid, one of the major fatte acids, was decreased to 13% from 54% in the content of total fatty acids after reaction. The carotenoids in rainbow trout were composed of 0.4% $\alpha$-carotene, 1.6% $\beta$ -carotene, 80% canthaxanthin, 7% lutein and 11% zeaxanthin, thus the canthaxanthin was the major component. This canthaxanthin was the most degraded carotenoid by lipoxygenase catalyzed co-oxidation during the reaction. On the other hand the tocopherol isomers found in the rainbow trout were $\alpha$ and $\beta$ -tocopherol, and $\alpha$-tocopherol had a higher degradation rate by the lipoxygenase catalyzed co-oxidation than of $\beta$-tocopherol in the reaction of model system.

  • Combustion of coke grains in a pellet used to be modeled using the shrinking core model in the previous indurator simulations. This leads to the discussions about its propriety due to the fundamental assumptions of the model inconsistent with the particle characteristics. The current study presents the grain model as an improvemen, and the differently used reaction models are compared. In addition, the simulations assuming changed particle conditions are conducted to display the effects of using the grain model.

  • This paper presented an improved analytical method for calculating armature-reaction field in the surface-mounted permanent magnet machines accounting for opening slots. The analytical model is divided into two types of subdomains. The current of the armature is centralized in the center of the slots. The field solution of each subdomain is obtained by applying the interface and boundary conditions of the model. Two 30-pole/36-slot prototype machines with different slot-opening width are used for validation. The FE (finite element) results confirm the validity of the analytical results with the proposed model. The investigation shows that the wider the slot-opening width is, the smaller the peak value of radial and circumferential components of flux density, and the analytical armature-reaction field produced by centralized current in the slots is similar with the armature-reaction field produced by distributed current in the slots in the FE.

  • The 123Te(p,n)123I, 124Te(p,n)124I and 124Te(p,2n)123I reactions, among the many reaction channels opened, are the major reactions under consideration from a diagnostic purpose because reaction residuals as the gamma emitters are used for most radiophamaceutical applications involving radioiodine. Based on the available experimental data, the absorption cross sections and elastic scattering angular distributions of the proton-induced nuclear reaction on Te isotopes below 60 MeV are calculated using the optical model code APMNK. The transmission coefficients of neutron, proton, deuteron, trition and alpha particles are calculated by CUNF code and are fed into the GNASH code. By adjusting level density parameters and the pair correction values of some reaction channels, as well as the composite nucleus state density constants of the pre-equilibrium model, the production cross sections and energy-angle correlated spectra of the secondary light particles, as well as production cross sections and energy distributions of heavy recoils and gamma rays are calculated by the statistical plus pre-equilibrium model code GNASH. The calculated results are analysed and compared with the experimental data taken from the EXFOR. The optimized global optical model parameters give overall agreement with the experimental data over both the entire energy range and all tellurium isotopes.

  • The pyrolysis reactions of atomic hydrogen with chloroform were studied In a 4 cm 1.6. tubular flow reactor with low flow velocity 1518 cm/sec and a 2.6 cm 1.4. tubular flow reactor with high flow velocity (1227 cm/sec). The hydrogen atom concentration was measured by chemiluminescence titration with nitrogen dioxide, and the chloroform concentrations were determined using a gas chromatography. The chloroform conversion efficiency depended on both the chloroform flow rate and linear flow velocity, but 416 not depend on the flow rate of hydrogen atom. A computer model was employed to estimate a rate constant for the initial reaction of atomic hydrogen with chloroform. The model consisted of a scheme for chloroform-hydrogen atom reaction, Runge-Kutta 4th-order method for Integration of first-order differential equations describing the time dependence of the concentrations of various chemical species, and Rosenbrock method for optimization to match model and experimental results. The scheme for chloroform-hydrogen atom reaction Included 22 elementary reactions. The rate constant estimated using the data obtained from the 2.6 cm 1.4. reactor was to be 8.1 $\times$ $10^{-14}$ $cm^3$/molecule-sec and 3.8 $\times$ $10^{-15}$ cms/molecule-sec, and the deviations of computer model from experimental results were 9% and 12% , for the each reaction time of 0.028 sec and 0.072 sec, respectively.

  • In this study, the H2O reaction with SiO clusters was investigated using ab initio Monte Carlo simulations and density functional theory calculations. Three chemistry models, PBE1/DGDZVP (Model 1), PBE1/DGDZVP (Si atom), and aug-cc-pVDZ (O and H atoms), (Model 2) and PBE1/aug-cc-pVDZ (Model 3), were used. The average bond lengths, as well as the relative and reaction energies, were calculated using Models 1, 2, and 3. The average bond lengths of Si-O and O-H are 1.67-1.75 Å and 0.96-0.97 Å, respectively, using Models 1, 2, and 3. The most stable structures were formed by the H transfer from an H2O molecule except for Si3O3-H2O-1 cluster. The Si3O3 cluster with H2O exhibited the lowest reaction energy. In addition, the Bader charge distributions of the SinOn and (SiO)n-H2O clusters with n = 1-7 were calculated using Model 1. We determined that the reaction sites between H2O and the SiO clusters possessed the highest fraction of electrons.
