This study was conducted to investigate whether egg-shell may be used as a mineral sourceor leavening agent in breadmaking. In Korea the waste volume of egg shell has been estimated at about 28,694 tons per year. Carbon dioxide generation maxima were established for barking powder$(153{\pm}3ml/g)$, egg-shell(205in reaction with lactic acid) and yeast$(115{\pm}3ml/sugar\;g)$. Gas release time required for each substance to reach $CO_2$ maximum was, for baking powder 7 minutes, for egg-shell 45 mins and for yeast 240 mins. Particle size of egg-shell in breadmaking was suitable more than 20 mesh (-). When egg-shell only was added to the basic formular without including lactic acid, no leavening effect was observed. However, when lactic acid and egg-shell were used together, the leavening effect was more or less equivalent to that of yeast(control). Addition of egg-shell was found to increase calcium content of bread products without noticeable altering flavor, as compared with control. Joint use of egg-shell was organic acids in breadmaking was shown to have potential in time saving, volume increase and yeast saving.

InGaN layers on GaN templated sapphire (0001) substrates were grown by mixed-source hydride vapor phase epitaxy (HVPE) method. In order to get InGaN layers, Ga-mixed In metal and $NH_3$ gas were used as group III and group V source materials, respectively. The InGaN material was compounded from chemical reaction between $NH_3$ and indium-gallium chloride farmed by HCl flowed over metallic In mixed with Ga. The grown layers were confirmed to be InGaN ternary crystal alloys by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). In concentration of the InGaN layers grown by selective area growth (SAG) method was investigated by the photoluminescence (PL) and cathodoluminescence (CL) measurements. Indium concentration was estimated to be in the range 3 %. Moreover, as a new attempt in obtaining InAlGaN layers, the growth of the thick InAlGaN layers was performed by putting small amount of Ga and Al into the In source. We found the new results that the metallic In mixed with Ga (and Al) as a group III source material could be used in the growth process of the In(Al)GaN layers by the mixed-source HVPE method.

The effect of the size and shape of magnesium(Mg) powder on the formation of $MgB_2$ and the critical current density($J_{c,}$) of $MgB_2$ bulk was studied. As a precursor for the formation of $MgB_2$, Mg and $MgB_4$ powder, which was synthesized through the reaction of boron (B) with Mg powders, was used. $MgB_4$ was mixed with Mg powders of various sizes, pressed into pellets and heat-treated at $650^{\circ}C-750^{\circ}C$ in flowing argon gas. The XRD analysis of the heat-treated $MgB_2$ samples showed that the volume fraction of $MgB_2$ was the highest as 92.74 % when spherical Mg powder with an average size of $25.7{\mu}m$ was used, whereas the volume fraction was the lowest as 79.64 % when plate-like Mg powder with a size of $34.1{\mu}m$ was used. The superconducting transition temperature ($T_c$) of $MgB_2$ was not sensitive to the characteristics of the Mg powders used. All of the prepared $MgB_2$ samples showed a high $T_c$ of 38.3 K and a small superconducting transition width of 0.2 K-0.5 K. $J_c$ (5 K and 1 T) of $MgB_2$ was the highest as $3.93{\times}10^4A/cm^2$ when spherical Mg powder with a size of $25.7{\mu}m$ was used, whereas $J_c$ was the lowest as $2.18{\times}10^4A/cm^2$when plate-like Mg powder with a size of $34.1{\mu}m$ was used. The relationship between the $J_c$ of $MgB_2$ and the characteristics of the Mg powders used was explained in terms of the volume fraction of $MgB_2$ and the apparent density of the $MgB_2$ pellets.
The morphology and photoluminescence characteristics of green light emitting hexaaluminate phosphor particles prepared by high temperature spray pyrolysis from spray solution with and without ammonium dihydrogen phosphate flux were investigated. The particles prepared from spray solution without flux material had hollow morphology at preparation temperatures between $900^{\circ}C$ and $1,650^{\circ}C$. Ammonium dihydrogen phosphate flux added into spray solution enabled the formation of particles with spherical shape and filled morphology at preparation temperatures between $900^{\circ}C$ and $1,650^{\circ}C$. The hexaaluminate phosphor particles with magnetoplumbite structure were directly prepared by spray pyrolysis from spray solution with ammonium dihydrogen phosphate flux above $1,600^{\circ}C$. Ammonium dihydrogen phosphate flux was effective in improving the photoluminescence intensity of the phosphor particles at low preparation temperatures. The phosphor particles prepared from spray solution with and without flux material by spray pyrolysis under reducing atmosphere at $1,650^{\circ}C$ had comparable photoluminescence intensities with that of the phosphor particles optimized by post-treatment.

Electrochemical studies were performed by a half-cell test for the nickel hydroxide (cathode) and hydrogen storage alloy(anode) electrodes for the sealed Ni-MH batteries applicable to industrial use. The electrodes were fabricated and checked a charge efficiency and an internal pressure of the battery during charge-discharge cycling. In order to reduce the internal pressure of the sealed Ni-MH battery, cyclic voltammetry (CV) were performed on the electrodes of nickel hydroxide(cathode) and hydrogen storage alloy(anode), respectively. The results of the test showed clearly the oxidation/reduction and oxygen evolution reaction in a nickel hydroxide electrode and the hydrogenation behavior of a hydrogen storage electrode. The sealed Ni-MH battery of 130Ah was fabricated by using nickel hydroxide of a high over-voltage for an oxygen gas evolution and hydrogen storage alloy of a good performance for activation The battery showed a good characteristics such as a high charge efficiency of 98% at 1 C charge current, a low level internal pressure of 4 atm on a continuous over-charging and a large preservation capacity of 95% at 400 cycle.

This paper presents a solution to the inverse problem for the service boundary conditions of thermal-flow and structure analysis in a catalyst substrate. The exhaust-gas purification efficiency of a catalyst substrate is influenced by the shape parameter, catalyst ingredients and so on and is estimated by the thermal flow uniformity. The formulations of the inverse problem of obtaining the thermal-flow parameters (inlet temperature, velocity, heat of reaction, convective heat-transfer coefficient) and the direct problem of estimating from a given outlet temperature distribution are described. An experiment was designed and the response-surface optimization technique was used to solve the proposed inverse problem. The temperature distribution of the catalyst substrate was obtained by thermal-flow analysis for the predicted thermal-flow parameters. The thermal stress and durability assessments for the catalyst substrate were performed on the basis of this temperature distribution. The efficiency and accuracy of the inverse approach have been demonstrated through the achievement of good agreement between the thermal-flow response surface model and the results of experimental vehicle tests.

Background: Recent studies have suggested that expression of the RAS protein activator like-1 gene (RASAL1) is decreased in gastric carcinoma tissues and cell lines, indicated a role in tumorigenesis and development of gastric cancer. Reduced expression of RASAL1 could result in aberrant increase of activity of RAS signaling pathways in cancer cells. However, the exact mechanism which induces down-regulation of the RASAL1 gene remains unclear. This study aimed to determine the methylation status and regulation of RASAL1 in gastric cancer. Materials and Methods: Using the methylation-specific polymerase chain reaction (MSP), the methylation status of CpG islands in the RASAL1 promoter in gastric cancers and paired adjacent non-cancerous tissues from 40 patients was assessed and its clinicopathological significance was analyzed. The methylation status of RASAL1 in gastric cancer lines MKN-28, SGC-790l, BGC-823, as well as in normal gastric epithelial cell line GES-l was also determined after treatment with a DNA methyltransferase inhibitor, 5-aza-2'-doexycytidine (5-Aza-CdR). RAS activity (GAS-GTP) was assessed through a pull-down method, while protein levels of ERK1/2, a downstream molecule of RAS signaling pathways, were determined by Western blotting. Results: The frequencies of RASAL1 promoter methylation in gastric cancer and paired adjacent non-cancerous tissues were 70% (28/40) and 30% (12/40) respectively (P<0.05). There were significantly correlations between RASAL1 promoter methylation with tumor differentiation, tumor size, invasive depth and lymph node metastasis in patients with gastric cancer (all P<0.05), but no correlation was found for age or gender. Promoter hypermethylation of the RASAL1 gene was detected in MKN-28, SGC-790l and BGC-823 cancer cells, but not in the normal gastric epithelial cell line GES-1. Elevated expression of the RASAL1 protein, a decreased RAS-GTP and p-ERK1/2 protein were detected in three gastric cancer cell lines after treatment with 5-Aza-CdR. Conclusions: Aberrant hypermethylation of the RASAL1 gene promoter frequently occurs in gastric cancer tissues and cells. In addition, the demethylating agent 5-Aza-CdR can reverse the hypermethylation of RASAL1 gene and up-regulate the expression of RASAL1 significantly in gastric cancer cells in vivo. Our study suggests that RASAL1 promoter methylation may have a certain relationship with the reduced RASAL1 expression in gastric cancer.
The adsorption properties of the activated carbon-based adsorbents were studied to remove COS emitted from $SO_2$ catalytic reduction process on the integrated gasification combined cycle (IGCC) system in this work. Transition metal supported catalysts and mixed metal oxide catalysts were used for the $SO_2$ catalytic reduction. The mechanism of COS produced from the $SO_2$ reduction and the COS concentration s according to the reaction temperature were investigated. In this study, an activated carbon and a modified activated carbon doped with KOH were used to remove the very low concentration of COS effectively. The adsorption rate and the breakthrough time of COS were measured by a thermo gravity analyzer (TGA, Cahn Balance) and a fixed bed flow reactor equipped with GC-pulsed flammable photometric detector (PFPD), respectively. It was confirmed that the COS breakthrough time of the activated carbon doped with KOH was longer than that of an activated carbon. In conclusion, the modified-activated carbon having a high surface area showed a high adsorption rate of COS produced from the $SO_2$ reduction.

Vinyl chloride monomer exists as gas phase at normal temperature and reacts with oxygen and strong oxidant in the air to form oxidized materials. Because of being easily synthesized, it is used as a main source at the synthetic reaction process of PVC synthesis factories. Ministry of Labor regulates its usage as a carcinogen and its exposure level as 1 ppm. But the amount of VCM production in PVC and VCM production process hasn't been exactly estimated. In addition, facilities of this factory are located in outdoor. Therefore, this study was designed to investigate effects of temperature on breakthrough of charcoal tube at a fixed concentration and temperature during VCM sampling based on NIOSH and OSHA methods which were used as methods of occupational environment measuring and analysis. During the sampling of VCM, methods of OSHA and NIOSH require flow rate of 0.05 lpm and sampling volume of $3{\ell}$, $5{\ell}$ respectively, at this time carbon molecular sieve tube and coconut shell charcoal tube are used to observe the breakthrough along with concentration and temperature. As a result, significant difference between average adsorbed amounts of OSHA methods but that of NIOSH methods cannot be found. NIOSH method is likely to be effected by high temperature and normal temperature in high concentration. Breakthrough is not found in the method of OSHA at different conditions of temperature and concentration. As the result of this study we could verify that breakthrough occurred in the process of sampling VCM with NIOSH methods. Therefor in summer time, breakthrough should be considered and research on the breakthrough volume should be done. It is considered the research about the specificity of the coconut shell charcoal and carbon molecular sieve sorbent should be done when sampling VCM in comming days.
The abatement of methane emission from ruminants is an important global issue due to its contribution to greenhouse gas with carbon dioxide. Methane is generated in the rumen by methanogens (archaea) that utilize metabolic hydrogen ($H_2$) to reduce carbon dioxide, and is a significant electron sink in the rumen ecosystem. Therefore, the competition for hydrogen used for methanogenesis with alternative reductions of rumen microbes should be an effective option to reduce rumen methanogenesis. Some methanogens parasitically survive on the surface of ciliate protozoa, so that defaunation or decrease in protozoa number might contribute to abate methanogenesis. The most important issue for mitigation of rumen methanogenesis with manipulators is to secure safety for animals and their products and the environment. In this respect, prophylactic effects of probiotics, prebiotics and miscellaneous compounds to mitigate rumen methanogenesis have been developed instead of antibiotics, ionophores such as monensin, and lasalocid in Japan. Nitrate suppresses rumen methanogenesis by its reducing reaction in the rumen. However, excess intake of nitrate causes intoxication due to nitrite accumulation, which induces methemoglobinemia. The nitrite accumulation is attributed to a relatively higher rate of nitrate reduction to nitrite than nitrite to ammonia via nitroxyl and hydroxylamine. The in vitro and in vivo trials have been conducted to clarify the prophylactic effects of L-cysteine, some strains of lactic acid bacteria and yeast and/or ${\beta}$1-4 galactooligosaccharide on nitrate-nitrite intoxication and methanogenesis. The administration of nitrate with ${\beta}$1-4 galacto-oligosaccharide, Candida kefyr, and Lactococcus lactis subsp. lactis were suggested to possibly control rumen methanogenesis and prevent nitrite formation in the rumen. For prebiotics, nisin which is a bacteriocin produced by Lactococcus lactis subsp. lactis has been demonstrated to abate rumen methanogenesis in the same manner as monensin. A protein resistant anti-microbe (PRA) has been isolated from Lactobacillus plantarum as a manipulator to mitigate rumen methanogenesis. Recently, hydrogen peroxide was identified as a part of the manipulating effect of PRA on rumen methanogenesis. The suppressing effects of secondary metabolites from plants such as saponin and tannin on rumen methanogenesis have been examined. Especially, yucca schidigera extract, sarsaponin (steroidal glycosides), can suppress rumen methanogenesis thereby improving protein utilization efficiency. The cashew nutshell liquid (CNSL), or cashew shell oil, which is a natural resin found in the honeycomb structure of the cashew nutshell has been found to mitigate rumen methanogenesis. In an attempt to seek manipulators in the section on methane belching from ruminants, the arrangement of an inventory of mitigation technologies available for the Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) and Joint Implementation (JI) in the Kyoto mechanism has been advancing to target ruminant livestock in Asian and Pacific regions.
