활성탄을 이용한 산업체 악취물질의 열적 흡탈착 연구 (A Study on the Thermal Adsorption and Desorption Characteristics of Industrial Odorants using Activated Carbon)

  • 활성탄을 이용한 산업체 악취물질 제거 특성을 규명하기 위하여 일반적으로 사용되는 상업용 활성탄의 탈착반응 특성을 조사하였다. 활성탄의 물리 화학적 특성을 조사하기 위해 BET 비표면적을 분석하였으며, 활성탄의 흡착력을 평가하기 위해 요오드가를 측정하였다. 활성탄에 흡착된 악취물질의 탈착반응특성 평가를 위해 열중량분석기(Thermogravimetric Analyzer; TGA)를 사용하였다. 활성탄의 흡 탈착에 따른 반응특성을 알아보기 위해 Friedman 법과 Freeman-Carroll 법을 이용하여 활성화에너지와 반응차수를 계산하였다. 활성탄은 신탄일 때 보다 재생탄일 때 흡착능력이 현저히 떨어졌으며, Friedman 법을 이용하여 활성화 에너지를 계산한 결과 15.9~23.4 kJ/mol, Freeman-Carroll 법을 이용하여 계산한 결과 22.7~33.8 kJ/mol로 나타났다.

Growth Mechanism and Crystal Ordering of Spherulitic Patterns in a Belousov-Zhabotinsky Type Reaction System

  • Three types of spherulitic morphologies have been investigated in dual substrate mode of Belousov-Zhabotinsky (BZ) type reaction system. Prior to growth of spherulites, three distinct patterning behaviors have been observed sequentially during the reaction process. Initial and the early-phase of reaction showed the emergence of concentric ring-like wave patterns. A colloidal-state of reaction consists of numerous fine solid particles, which forms primarily some nucleation centers of dendritic characters. The nucleation centers were found to grow in sizes and shapes with the progress of reaction. It leads to growth of dendritic-like spherulitic crystal patterns. The resultant spherulites showed transitions in their morphologies, including sea-weeds and rhythmic spherulitic crystal patterns, by the effects substituted organic substrate and in the higher concentration of bromate-initiator respectively. The branching mechanism and crystal ordering of spherulitic textures were studied with help of optical microscope (OPM) and scanning electron microscope (SEM). Characteristics of crystal phases were also evaluated using X-ray diffraction (XRD) and differential thermal analysis (DTA). Results indicated that the compositions of reactants and crystal orderings were interrelated with morphological transitions of spherulites as illustrated and described.

  • Sessile drop studies of molten Al on single crystal sapphire substrate were conducted to understand the wetting behavior and interfacial reaction at Al/Al2O3 interface. To investigate the wetting mechanism, the variation in contact angle was determined with time. The contact angle obtained in this study decreased exponentially with time. This result means that the driving force for wetting is the reduction in interfacial energy between liquid Al and sapphire caused by the interfacial reaction. The closer examination revealed that the reaction was the dissolution of sapphire by molten Al. Ti has been frequently used to improve wetting on ceramic materials. Therefore, the influence of Ti content on the wetting behaviour was investigated in this work. The equilibrium wetting angles of pure Al, Al-0.3 wt%Ti, and Al-1.0 wt%Ti at 100$0^{\circ}C$ were 63$^{\circ}$, 59$^{\circ}$, and 54$^{\circ}$respectively. The difference is considered as the result of the change in interfacial energy caused by the reaction between Ti and sapphire and the interfacial reaction formed the reaction products of varying stoichiometry (TiO, Ti2O3, TiO2 etc.).

  • In this paper, we analysed fatty acid methyl ester contents in the biodiesel which is produced from the newly developed biodiesel production equipment. The lard oil was used as the raw material through various experimental conditions. Thirty one experiments were conducted, which were based on the experimental conditions that designed by central composite design method. The effects of four independent variables, including reaction temperature, reaction time, oil to methanol molar ratio, and catalytic amount, were investigated at five levels using central composite design (CCD). Fatty acid methyl ester content was chosen dependent variable. Although the results of analysis of the surface with an irregular surface geometry showed that the biodiesel was partially impure after the reaction due to the natural characteristics of the lard oil as the raw material, we could confirm the relationship between them from the facts that the production amount of fatty acid methyl ester changes according to reaction temperature, reaction time, oil to methanol molar ratio, and catalytic amount.

Reaction Zone Thickness of Turbulent Premixed Flame

  • Usually, we use the flame thickness and turbulence scale to classify the flame structure on a phase diagram of turbulent combustion. The flame structure in turbulence is still in debate, and many studies have been done. Since the flame motion is rapid and its reaction zone thickness is very thin, it is difficult to estimate the flame thickness. Here, we propose a new approach to determine the reaction zone thickness based on ion current signals obtained by an electrostatic probe, which has enough time and space resolution to detect flame fluctuation. Since the signal depends on the flow condition and flame curvature, it may be difficult to analyze directly these signals and examine the flame characteristics. However, ion concentration is high only in the region where hydrocarbon-oxygen reactions occur, and we can specify the reaction zone. Based on the reaction zone existing, we estimate the reaction zone thickness. We obtain the thickness of flames both in the cyclone-jet combustor and on a Bunsen burner, compared with theoretically predicted value, the Zeldovich thickness. Results show that the experimentally obtained thickness is almost the same as the Zeldovich thickness. It is concluded that this approach can be used to obtain the local flame structure for modeling turbulent combustion.

대기오염 물질인 $SO_2$ 제거반응 특성 연구 (A Study on the Removal Reaction Characteristics of Sulfur Dioxide)

  • The effects of reaction temperature, SO2 and CO2 concentration in an air gas stream, particle sizes of limestone on the reactivity and capacity of SO2 removal have been determined in a thermogravimetric analyser(TGA). The apparent reaction order of sulfation reaction of pre-calcined lime(CaO) with respect to SO2 is found to be close to unity. The apparent activation energies are found to be 17,000 kcal/kmol for sulfation of pre-calcined lime and 19,500 kcal/kmol for direct sulfation of limestone(CaCO3). The initial sulfation reaction rate of pre-calcined lime increases with increasing temperature, whereas the sulfur capture capacity exhibits a maximum value at 90$0^{\circ}C$. In direct sulfation of limestone, sulfation reactivity and sulfur capature capacity of sorbent increase with increasing temperature and decreasing CO2 concentration in a gas bulk stream. The main pare of pre-calcined lime is shifted to the larger pore sizes and pore volume decreases with increasing sulfation time and temperature. The surface area of lime decreases with increasing calcination temperature under an air atmosphere, whereas is yearly constant under a CO2(5, 10%) atmosphere in a gas stream.

Enzymatic Hydrolysis of Crystalline Chitin in an Agitated Bead Reaction System and Its Reaction Characteristics

  • Native crystalline chitin was hydrolyzed in an agitated bead reaction system using crude chitinase excreted from Aspergillus fumigatus JC-19. The reaction was enhanced significantly, and the concentration and yield of reducing sugar after 48 hours were measured to be 35.42 g/I (w/v) and 0.64, respectively, around 1.86 times higher than those of the conventional system that was carried out without glass beads. The effect of reaction conditions, such as the amounts of chitin, chitinase and glass beads, and the size of glass bead, were examined. Ball milled chitin was also hydrolyzed in the agitated bead reaction system, the conversion yield and reaction rate of ball milled chitin for 24 hours increased up to 0.87 and 48.02 g/I, respectively. Chitinase showed relatively high stability in the agitated bead reaction system, particularly in the presence of enzyme stabilizer, $Ca^{++}$, which played a critical role in preventing the deactivation of chitinase by the physical impact of glass beads. The variations of the structural features of chitin during the reaction were followed by SEM and X-ray diffraction, and the enhanced hydrolysis reaction was caused by both the fragmentation of chitin particles and the destruction of the crystalline structure owing to the synergic effects of the attrition of glass beads and the hydrolytic action of chitinase.

$Nb/MoSi_2$ 적층복합재료의 경도특성에 미치는 제조온도의 영향 (Effect of Fabricating Temperature on Hardness Characteristics of $Nb/MoSi_2$ Laminate Composite)

  • Hardness characteristics and microstructures of $Nb/MoSi_2$ laminate composites were evaluated from the variation of fabricating conditions such as preparation temperature, applied pressure and pressure holding time. $Nb/MoSi_2$ laminate composites composed of $MoSi_2$ powder and Nb sheets were fabricated by the hot press. From experimental results, it was found that the lamination from Nb sheet and $MoSi_2$ powder was an excellent strategy to improve hardness characteristics of monolithic $MoSi_2$. However, interfacial reaction products like(Nb, Mo)$SiO_2\;and\;Nb2Si_3$ formed at the interface of $Nb/MoSi_2$ and increased with fabricating temperature.

부산 연안역의 야간 고농도 오존 발생 특성과 기상학적 관련성 (Characteristics of nocturnal maximum ozone and meteorological relevance in Pusan coastal area)

  • This study was performed to investigate the characteristics of nocturnal maxiumu ozone occurrence and the meteorological relevance using to hourly ozone data and meteorological data for 1995~1996 in Pusan coastal area. Kwangbokdong showed the highest occurrence of nocturnal maximum ozone as 36.9%, and Deokcheondong showed the lowest occurrence(9.2%) for research period in Pusan. The occurrence rates of nocturnal maximum ozone concentration were decreased toward land area. The low maximum temperature, high minimum temperature, low diurnal range, high relative humidity, high wind speed, high could amount, low sunshine and low radiation were closely related to the main meteorological characteristics occuring the nocturnal maximum concnetration of ozone. It was shown that normal daily variation of ozone concentration by strong photochemical reaction at the before day of nocturnal maximum ozone. The concnetration of nocturnal maximum ozone were occured by entrainment of ozone from the upper layer of developed mixing layer. There are no ozone sources near the ground at night, so that the nighttime ozone should be entrained from the upper layer by forced convection.

  • The laminar combustion characteristics of interacting coal particles in a convective flow are numerically investigated at particle arrangement and size difference. The numerical simulations, which use the two-step global reaction model to account for the surrounding gas effect, show the detailed interaction among the inter-space particles, undergoing devolatilization and subsequent char burning. Several parametric studies, which include the effect of the gas temperature (1700 K), high pressure(10 atm) and variation in geometrical arrangement of the particle diameter on the volatile release rate and the char combustion rate, have been carried out. The comparison indicates that the shift to the multiple particle arrangement resulted in the substantial change of the combustion characteristics and that the volatile release rate of the interacting coal particles exhibits a strong dependency on the particle spacing and size difference.
