  • Current transformer (CT) saturation may cause a variety of protective relays to malfunction. The conventional CT is designed that it can carry up to 20 times the rated current without exceeding 10% ratio error. However, the possibility of CT saturation still remains if the fault current contains substantial amounts of ac and/or dc components. This paper presents a design method of iron-cored CTs for use with protective relays to prevent CT saturation. The proposed design method determines the core cross section of the CT; it employs the transient dimensioning factor to consider relay's operating time (duty cycle) and dc component as well as ac components contained in the fault current, and symmetrical short-circuit current factor to consider as well as ac components contained in the fault current, and symmetrical short-circuit current factor to consider the biggest fault current. The method designs the cross section of CTs in cases of reclosure and no reclosure.

  • This paper describes the forward type pulse power supply which is the simple circuit configuration and easy to be managed using a power semiconductor switching device(Power-MOSFET) in the view of commercialization. The maximum value of output pulse voltage of the proposed pulse power supply system can be realized by the variation of phase angle($\phi$) of bridge rectifier circuit and also its pulse period is determined by the duty ratio of Power-MOSFET. The principle of basic operating and the operating characteristics of the forward type pulse power supply are estimated by the switching frequency, the variation of phase angle($\phi$)It is shown that theoretical and experimental results are in good agreement by comparing simulation and experimental results of proposed pulse power supply when a lamp type ozonizer can be used as a load. This proposed pulse power system shows that it can be practically used in the future as a power source system in various fields.

  • In this paper, a contactless power supply using half-bridge series resonant converter that achieves ZVS operation of main switches and ZCS operation of secondary side diodes is proposed. Since the proposed contactless power supply using half-bridge series resonant converter operates with lower switching frequency than the resonant frequency, it can achieve ZCS operation of secondary side diodes due to discontinuous resonant current. And it is also possible to control the converter in narrow frequency range and to obtain high voltage gain, which, in turn, offers low turns ratio for the transformer and high efficiency. Based on the theoretical analysis and simulation results, the 3.15W prototype is built and the final experimental results are described.

  • Population concentration in urban areas has led traffic management a central issue. To mitigate traffic congestions, the government has planned to construct large-cross-section tunnels deep underground. This study focuses on estimating the damage caused to frame structures owing to tunnel excavation. When constructing a tunnel network deep underground, it is necessary to divide the main tunnel and connect the divergence tunnel to the ground surface. Ground settlement is caused by excavation of the adjacent divergence tunnel. Therefore, predicting ground settlement using diverse variables is necessary before performing damage estimation. We used the volume loss and cover-tunnel diameter ratio as the variables in this study. Applying the ground settlement values to the settlement induction device, we measured the extent of damage to frame structures due to displacement at specific points. The vertical and horizontal displacements that occur at these points were measured using preattached LVDT (Linear variable differential transformer), and the lateral strain and angular distortion were calculated using these displacements. The lateral strain and angular distortion are key parameters for structural damage estimation. A damage assessment chart comprises the "Negligible", "Very Slight Damage", "Slight Damage", "Moderate to Severe Damage", and "Severe to Very Severe Damage" categories was developed. This table was applied to steel frame and concrete frame structures for comparison.

  • We have developed superconducting mixer receivers for 129 GHz VLBI observation in Korean VLBI Network (KVN). The developed mixer has a radial waveguide probe with simple transmission line L-C transformer as a tuning circuit to its 5 series-connected junctions, which can have 125 - 165 GHz as the operation radio frequency (RF). For intermediate frequency (IF) signal path a high impedance quarter-wavelength line connects the probe to one end of symmetric RF chokes. The double side band (DSB) receiver noise of the mixer was about 40 K over 4 - 6 GHz IF band, whereas we achieved the uncorrected single side band (SSB) noise temperature of about 70 K and better than 10 dB image rejection ratio in 2SB configuration with 8 - 10 GHz IF band. Insert-type receiver cartridges employing the mixers have been under commission for KVN stations.

  • Among the variable-speed AC motor drive systems, the static slip power recovery system has been widely adopted in large power drives because a high efficiency drive can be obtained by recovering the slip power to the AC line. Although many improvements have been made in this system, several problems also remain such as the need of transformer in inverter AC side, which results in limiting speed control range and increasing the losses, production of reactive power by the control of inverter firing angle, harmonics in line currents, and so on. This paper presents the novel high performance slip power recovery system using the boost converter and small size filter in the rotor circuit, which recovers slip power of a wound rotor induction machine to AC supply efficiently with the aid of the boost converter, in which most of the problems in conventional system can be solved. The speed can be controlled by the duty ratio of the converter switch, not by inverter firing angle. As a results, the proposed system can operate in high power factor and the harmonic currents caused by the inverter and rectifier can be considerably suppressed. The validity of the proposed system verified by demonstrating the good agreement in the simulation and experimental results.

  • In low voltage high current applications such as fuel cells the current-fed DC-DC converter which has small ripple current and turn ratio is more efficient. In the applications larger than 5kW the conventional single-phase current-fed converter based on full-bridge, half-bridge or push-pull topologies has high current burden of devices such as switches, and the selection and optimized design of the devices are not easy. In this paper a three-phase active-clamped current-fed push-pull DC-DC converter suitable for high power high step-up applications is proposed. The proposed converter has reduced current burden and is suitable for wide input voltage applications due to the use of whole duty cycle range. Design methods of main components including three-phase high frequency transformers are provided, and the validity and performance of the proposed converter are proved from a 5kW prototype.

  • This paper deals with error compensation in current transformers. Since the exciting current can be considered as the main error source, its evaluation can allow the compensation of its detrimental effects to be obtained. The exciting current required by the transformer in every king of steady state operation can be determined by simply acquiring the secondary current, provided that the examined CT has been preliminarily identified. This paper also proposed a new approach to the model of the exciting branch. The exciting branch can be divided into a non-linear core loss resistor, and a non-linear magnetizing inductor whose flux and current characteristic is not the same as the characteristic shown by the joined tips of the first quadrant of a family of hysteresis loops. The performance of the proposed algorithm was validated under various conditions using EMTP generated data. Test result show, in all cases an improvement in primary current reproduction accuracy, compared with that achieved using CT's ratio.

  • High-gain DC/DC converters have become one of the key technologies for the grid-connected operation of new energy power generation, and its research provides a significant impetus for the rapid development of new energy power generation. Inspired by the transformer effect and the ripple-suppressed ability of a coupled inductor, a double-coupled inductor high gain DC/DC converter with a ripple absorption circuit is proposed in this paper. By integrating the diode-capacitor voltage multiplying unit into the quadratic Boost converter and assembling the independent inductor into the magnetic core of structure coupled inductors, the adjustable range of the voltage gain can be effectively extended and the limit on duty ratio can be avoided. In addition, the volume of the magnetic element can be reduced. Very small ripples of input current can be obtained by the ripple absorption circuit, which is composed of an auxiliary inductor and a capacitor. The leakage inductance loss can be recovered to the load in a switching period, and the switching-off voltage spikes caused by leakage inductance can be suppressed by absorption in the diode-capacitor voltage multiplying unit. On the basis of the theoretical analysis, the feasibility of the proposed converter is verified by test results obtained by simulations and an experimental prototype.

  • This paper presents the robust design of each component used in the development of an induction bolt heating system for dismantling the high-temperature high-pressure casing heating bolts of turbines in power plants. The induction bolt heating system comprises seven assemblies, namely AC breaker, AC filter, inverter, transformer, work coil, cable, and CT/PT. For each of these assemblies, the various failure modes are identified by the failure mode and effects analysis (FMEA) method, and the causes and effects of these failure modes are presented. In addition, the risk priority numbers are deduced for the individual parts. To ensure robust design, the insulated-gate bipolar transistor (IGBT), switched-mode power supply (SMPS), C/T (adjusting current), capacitor, and coupling are selected. The IGBT is changed to a field-effect transistor (FET) to enhance the voltage applied to the induction heating system, and a dual-safety device is added to the SMPS. For C/T (adjusting current), the turns ratio is adjusted to ensure an appropriate amount of induced current. The capacitor is replaced by a product with heat resistance and durability; further, coupling with a water-resistant structure is improved such that the connecting parts are not easily destroyed. The ground connection is chosen for management priority.
