  • In this study, Polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) was applied to Strain Hardening Cement Composites (SHCC) for penetrating water repellency. The penetration depth of PDMS, strength of SHCC, and chloride ion penetration resistance of SHCC were investigated. As a result of measuring penetration depth of PDMS when applying different application method, it was confirmed that all methods satisfied the requirements of KS F 4930. Although the immersion method showed the largest penetration depth, the spray method was considered to be more appropriate considering the ease of field application. Compressive strength tests showed that the penetration depth of PDMS decreased as the compressive strength of SHCC increased. The compressive strength of M4-A and M4-B specimens with large PDMS penetration depths decreased by 9.6% and 8.0%, respectively, compared with those of M4 specimens produced without PDMS. Compressive strengths of the M1-A and M1-B specimens with small PDMS penetration depths were reduced by 4% and 2.2%, respectively, compared with the M1 specimen. As a result, it can be seen that the strength reduction rate of SHCC increases as the penetration depth of PDMS increases. The chlorine ion penetration tests showed that the chlorine ion penetration resistance increases with the penetration depth of PDMS.

  • Potassium added with bamboo salt showed better antioxidative effects than bamboo salt, solar salt, or purified salt. It also showed inhibitory effects on the mutagenicity of MNNG (N-methyl-N-nitro-N-nitrosoguanidine) in a Salmonella Typhimurium TA100 tester strain. At concentrations of 1.25 and 2.5 mg/plate, potassium bamboo salt and bamboo salt showed weaker co-mutagenicity effects than either purified salt or solar salt, respectively. Anticancer effects of salts were evaluated using MTT assay in HCT-116 human colon carcinoma cells. At a 1% salt concentration, the growth inhibitory rate of potassium bamboo salt was 54%, higher than that of 1 time baked bamboo salt (36%). However, purified salt and solar salt showed relatively lower inhibitory effects of 19% and 23%, respectively. To determine the inhibitory mechanisms of potassium bamboo salt, the expression levels of Bax and Bcl-2 genes in HCT-116 cells were determined by RT-PCR. Potassium bamboo salt significantly increased Bax and decreased Bcl-2 expression levels unlike bamboo salt, purified salt, and solar salt (p<0.05). Therefore, addition of potassium to salt decreased co-mutagenicity and increased in vitro antioxidative and anticancer effects.

  • Lactobacillus plantarum SM4, a strain producing β-glucosidase, was isolated from kimchi and fermented with white Taraxacum coreanum to enhance the production of bioactive compounds. The total polyphenol content(TPC), total flavonoid content(TFC), radical scavenging activity(RSA), tyrosinase inhibitory activities(TIA), and collagenase inhibitory activities(CIA) were measured to evaluate the skin whitening and anti-wrinkle effects of the fermented product. The TPC of fermented white T. coreanum was 41.8±0.26 mg GAE/g DW, which was approximately two times higher than the hot-water extraction of 21.4±0.67 mg GAE/g DW. RSA, an indicator of antioxidant activity, was 65.6±4.7% in fermentation, which is four times higher than that of the hot-water extract. TAI and CAI, which are indicators of the whitening and anti-wrinkle effects, were 87.9±4.73% and 66.7±3.48%, respectively, which were 2.4 and 1.5 times higher than those of hot-water extraction. When comparing the UVA(320 nm) protection effects of fermented and hot-water extraction, the fermented white T. coreanum showed higher protection with an absorption rate of 64.7% and 15.2%, respectively. The white T. coreanum fermented product showed higher bioactive properties and improved skin whitening, anti-wrinkle, and UV protection effects through the production of β-glucosidase from L. plantarum SM4.

  • We have demonstrated a sandwich-type ZnO-based piezoelectric energy harvesting nanogenerator, namely ZCZ-NG device, composed of symmetrically stacked layers of ZnO/carbon tape/ZnO structure. Especially, we have adopted a conductive double-sided adhesive carbon tape in an effort to fabricate a high-quality ZCZ-NG device, leading to its superior output performance in terms of the peak-to-peak output voltage. Effects of the device size, ZnO layer thickness, and bending strain rate on the device performance have been investigated by measuring the output voltage. Moreover, to evaluate the effectiveness of the fabricated ZCZ-NG devices, we have experimentally implemented a sensor network testbed which can utilize the output voltages of ZCZ-NG devices. This sensor network testbed consists of several components such as Arduino-based transmitter and receiver nodes, wirelessly transmitting the sensed information of each node. We hope that this research combining the ZnO-based energy harvesting devices and IoT sensor networks will contribute to the development of more advanced energy harvester-driven IoT sensor networks in the future.

  • The drum cutter, which is used in the form of an attachment of a excavator, is very useful in that it can be used in connection with a excavator that can perform various tasks in the field. This study estimated the load and torque acting on the drum cutter attachment by measuring the hydraulic pressure and strain that appear during excavation on the exposed rock slope using the drum cutter installed in the excavator. Working conditions such as the operation angle between the boom and arm of the excavator were divided into eight working modes. And as a result of analyzing the variations in hydraulic pressure and action force according to the working mode, it was confirmed that the hydraulic pressure and flow rate can be driven without any problems within the range considered in the manufacturing specifications of the drum cutter. The average load and torque acting on the drum cutter were within the range of the manufacturing specifications, but the maximum load was up to four times the specification. Because sumping was not properly performed due to the high ground strength and the ground included discontinuous surfaces in some locations, no trend of load and torque was found depending on the angle between the boom and arm of the excavator. However, it is believed that this result can be used to determine the range of loads and torques that appear on the drum cutter when excavating a high-intensity rock.

  • To know the influence of temperature on the fermentation process, a strain of Lactobacillus bulgarius was experimentally cultured three different temperature conditions of $39^{\circ}C,\;42^{\circ}C\;and\;45^{\circ}C$, pH 5.8 and mechanical agitation of 500rpm. During 20 hour's fermentation, the microbial growth attained the maximum concentration under the conditions mentioned above. However, the culturing conditions resulted different outcomes in terms of maximum concentration of the microbes and the residual concentration of substrate. Among the three temperature conditions, the fermentation at $45^{\circ}C$ was most effective and the maximum specific growth temperature conditions, the fermentation at $45^{\circ}C$ was most effective and the maximum specific growth rate was 0.58/hr. Activation energy deduced from the Arrhenius equation was 9,220cal/mole and entropy was $-33.74\;cal/^{\circ}K$ mole. Activation enthalpy was 9,845 cal/mole and free energy was 19,800 cal/mole.

  • In case of retrofitting a concrete structure subjected to blast load by using retrofit materials such as FRP (fiber-reinforced polymer), appropriate ductility as well as raising stiffness must be obtained. But the previous approximate and simplified models, which have been generally used in the design and analysis of structures subjected to blast load, cannot accurately consider effects on retrofit materials. Problems on the accuracy and reliability of analysis results have also been pointed out. In addition, as the response of concrete and reinforcement on dynamic load is different from that on static load, it is not appropriate to use material properties defined in the previous static or quasi-static conditions to in calculating the response on the blast load. In this study, therefore, an accurate HFPB (high fidelity physics based) finite element analysis technique, which includes material models considering strength increase, and strain rate effect on blast load with very fast loading velocity, has been suggested using LS-DYNA, an explicit analysis program. Through the suggested analysis technique, the behavior on the blast load of retrofitted concrete walls using CFRP (carbon fiber-reinforced polymer) and GFRP (glass fiber-reinforced polymer) have been analyzed, and the retrofit capacity analysis has also been carried out by comparing with the analysis results of a wall without retrofit. As a result of the analysis, the retrofit capacity showing an approximate $26{\sim}28%$ reduction of maximum deflection, according to the retrofit, was confirmed, and it is judged ate suggested analysis technique can be effectively applicable in evaluating effectiveness of retrofit materials and techniques.

  • The classification of bacteriophage could be followed by several criteria. In this study three criteria were used for classification of Lactobacillus casei bacteriophag. In serological classification. antiserum was prepared by rabbit and used for classification. The inactivation effect of phage by antiserum was exponential and L. casei phage was classified in to three serological groups by inactivation rate (K-values). The Lac Y group was proved as a new serological group but the Lac J and Lac S group were shown the same results as previous reports. From the comparison of restriction enzyme pattern of phage DNA, Lac J group was divided into four sub-groups. According to the difference of host range, Lac J-II group was further subdivided into three groups. These results were shown that L. casei strains S-1 bacteriophage was classified into 8 sub-groups. The phage YK of Lac Y group was shown to consist of a icosahedral head about 95nm in diameter, a contractile tail about 150nm in length and 20nm in width. The tail of YK phage is composed of stacked disks(4nm repeat)and a hexagonal baseplate. The molecular weight of YK phage DNA was approximately 85.6 Mdalton.

  • The effect of ammonia and glutamine on nitrogenase activity of Rhodopseudomonas sphaeroides was examined. The nitrogenase activity of this strain was inhibited by ammonia and glutamine. When ammonia and glutamine were exhausted, nitrogenase activity promptly resumed at its original rate. Methionine sulfoximine (MSX), irreversible glutamine synthetase (GS) inhibitor, is a structural analogue of glutamate. MSX was used in order to know whether the nitrogenase activity was inhibited by ammonia and glutamine directly or not. The ability of MSX to prevent nitrogenase switch-off by ammonia was found to be dependent upon the phase of culture. When the cells were sampled after 12 hour culture, $500{\mu}M$ MSX would not prevent the nitrogenase switch-off by ammonia. Twenty one percents of GS actibity was inhibited by $500{\mu}M$ of MSX and concentration of released ammonia decreased. But nitrogenase activiy was still inhibited by ammonia. However, nitrogenase switch-off after 20 hours would be prevented by $100{\mu}M$ of MSX. On the other hand, GS activity was ingibited completely by $100{\mu}M$ MSX and concentration of released ammonia somewhat increased. But nitrogenase activity was not inhibited. The data indicated that the inhibition of in vivo nitrogenase actibity of Rp. sphaeroides by ammonia seemed to be mediated by products of ammonia assimilation rather than by ammonia itself.

  • The effect of vanadium, which is known to decrease the stacking fault energy of Fe-base alloys, on the microstructure and elevated temperature sliding wear resistance of Fe-20Cr- 1.7C- 1Si alloy was investigated. The maximum amount of vanadium maintaining the austenitic matrix seems to be about 3wt.% in Fe-20Cr- 1.7C-1Si-xV (x = 0, 1, 3, 6. lOwt.%) alloys and the austenitic alloys showed better wear resistance than ferritic alloys. It was considered to be due to the low stacking fault energy and $\gamma->\alpha$ strain-induced phase transformation at rmm temperature. It was shown from elevated temperature sliding tests up to .$225^{\circ}C$ that the addition of vanadium increases the temperature, at which the transition from oxidative wear to adhesive wear occur, and the amount of d formed at $225^{\circ}C$. Thus, it was considered that the addition of vanadium improves the elevated temperature sliding wear resistance of Fe-20Cr- 1.7C - 1Si by reducing the increasing rate of stacking fault energy with temperature and by increasing Ma temperature.
