  • The life cycle of El Niño-Southern Oscillation (ENSO) typically follows a seasonal march, with onset in spring, developing during summer, maturing in boreal winter, and decaying over the following spring. This feature is referred to as ENSO phase locking. Recent studies have noted that seasonal modulation of the ENSO growth rate is essential for this process. This study investigates the fundamental effect of a seasonally varying growth rate on ENSO phase locking using a modified seasonally dependent recharge oscillator model. There are two phase locking regimes associated with the strength of the seasonal modulation of growth rate: 1) a weak regime in which only a single peak occurs and 2) a strong regime in which two types of events occur either with a single peak or with a double peak. Notably, there is a seasonal gap in the strong regime, during which the ENSO peak cannot occur because of large-scale ocean-atmosphere coupled processes. We also retrieve a simple analytical solution of the seasonal variance of ENSO, revealing that the variance is governed by the time integral of seasonally varying growth rate. Based on this formulation, we propose a seasonal energy index (SEI) that explains the seasonal gap and provides an intuitive explanation for ENSO phase locking, potentially applicable to global climate model ENSO diagnostics.

  • The developmental period of Laodelphax striatellus Fallen, a vector of rice stripe virus (RSV), was investigated at ten constant temperatures from 12.5 to $35{\pm}1^{\circ}C$ at 30 to 40% RH, and a photoperiod of 14:10 (L:D) h. Eggs developed successfully at each temperature tested and their developmental time decreased as temperature increased. Egg development was fasted at $35^{\circ}C$(5.8 days), and slowest at $12.5^{\circ}C$ (44.5 days). Nymphs could not develop to the adult stage at 32.5 or $35^{\circ}C$. The mean total developmental time of nymphal stages at 12.5, 15, 17.5, 20, 22.5, 25, 27.5 and $30^{\circ}C$ were 132.7, 55.9, 37.7, 26.9, 20.2, 15.8, 14.9 and 17.4 days, respectively. One linear model and four nonlinear models (Briere 1, Lactin 2, Logan 6 and Poikilotherm rate) were used to determine the response of developmental rate to temperature. The lower threshold temperatures of egg and total nymphal stage of L. striatellus were $10.2^{\circ}C$ and $10.7^{\circ}C$, respectively. The thermal constants (degree-days) for eggs and nymphs were 122.0 and 238.1DD, respectively. Among the four nonlinear models, the Poikilotherm rate model had the best fit for all developmental stages ($r^2$=0.98~0.99). The distribution of completion of each development stage was well described by the two-parameter Weibull function ($r^2$=0.84~0.94). The emergence rate of L. striatellus adults using DYMEX$^{(R)}$ was predicted under the assumption that the physiological age of over-wintered nymphs was 0.2 and that the Poikilotherm rate model was applied to describe temperature-dependent development. The result presented higher predictability than other conditions.

  • We examined theory for force-induced unbinding on a two-dimensional free energy surface where the internal dynamics of biomolecules is coupled with the rupture process under constant tension f. We show that only if the transition state ensemble is narrow and activation barrier is high, the f-dependent rupture rate in the 2D potential surface can faithfully be described using an effective 1D energy profile.

  • Performance and cavitation characteristics of a turbo pump inducer which is designed for oxygen pump is experimentally investigated. It is found that the static performance of inducer is dependent on the location of inlet pressure measurement and that enough distance from inducer is ensured for accurate evaluation of performance. With the increase of flow rate. NPSH tends to decrease as opposed to pump characteristics, which seems to be due to the cavitation region.

  • In developing, microscopic scale electrical and electronic devices, molecular level Insulators and functional electric conductors are fundamental. The properties of the electrical-insulating thin film materials are very much dependent on defects and electron transfer rate. There are number of companies which try to reduce defects and control electrical conductivity. Functional electrical conductors are more demanding subject in electrical fields. Reorganization energy around the sites that generate the electrons and holes are very important for the electron transfer in the organic thin layers.

  • This study addresses the wear characteristics of electro-rheological(ER) fluids which are potential application candidates for various hydraulic systems. As the first step, three different ER fluids are composed and subsequently tested to observe field-dependent Bingham behaviors. The pin-on-disc testing method is then adopted herein herein to investigate the wear rate of the ER fluids with various base liquids and particle concentrations. In addition, friction coefficients for the ER fluids are evaluated with respect to the normal force.

  • As the blood flow characteristics have been recognized to be closely related to various cardiovascular diseases, it is very important to predict them accurate enough in an efficient way. Thus, this paper proposes a one-dimensional spectral finite element model for the human blood vessels. The spectral finite element model is formulated in the frequency-domain by using the exact frequency dependent shape functions and applied to an ascending aorta.

  • The removal of chelated copper from anthraquinone dyes by cementation on powdered iron was studied. The removal of chelated copper was found to be a function of solution pH, amount of NTA and iron, and reaction temperature. In the presence of NTA, reaction rate of cementation was found to be strongly dependent on reaction temperature, solution pH, amount of NTA and amount of iron powder. These experimental results can be explained successfully by the distribution of complexed copper iron in solutions.

  • A model for a system whose deteriorating rate depends on the state is introduced. A repairman arrives according to Poisson process and increases the state of the system by the random amount if the state is below a threshold. If the system fails at arrival of the repairman it is assumed that the system is replaced by new one. The stationary distribution function of the state of the system and the expected life length of the system are deduced.
