An Experimental Study for Dryer (건조기 고안 제작에 관한 연구)

  • A newly devised dryer with heated air for the farm products, especially suited for high water content materials such as red pepper, Beer ground, each Vegetables, and Low water content materials such as Rough rice was tested for its thermal efficiency and drying mechanism, and the optimum conditions for each sample were established. In order to improve the present rural situation of drying farm products which entirely dependent upon natural solar radiation, a study upon an economic multi-parpose dryer was conducted. A series of drying tests were run first with red pepper which is one of the important cash crop in Korean farm. And successive series of tests were also run with such proaucts as garlic, sweet potatoes, green onion, radish, Beer ground and Rough rice. The results from the above experiment in drying system with heat dryer can be summarized as follows. 1. Drying duration could be shortened by the tempering effect in high water content crop such as red pepper and beer ground. 2. The color changes occured in around 20% water content in red pepper. The degree of color change was heavily affected by high temperature and short drying duration. 3. The drying condition of red pepper was most favourable at the temperature of 85$^{\circ}C$ in early stage and 80$^{\circ}C$ in middle stage and 75$^{\circ}C$ at the final stage, and with the air rate of 0.81㎥/sec and with sample amount of 200kg. 4. The drying condition of Rough rice(I.R.667) was most favourable at the templature of 40$^{\circ}C$ in early stage and 35$^{\circ}C$ in middle stage and final stage and with the air rate of 0.2㎥/sec and with sample amount of 75kg. 5. In order to prevent the color change of red pepper and to assure high efficiency in drying mechanism, it was necessary to lower the temperature as the time passes in drying process. 6. For vege tables, the drying rate were short in early stage and there was also tempering effect. However, for garlics, Constant drying rates through the early and final stages were observed and there were no tempering effects. 7.   • Lung cancer is one of the common malignant tumors in the world. It occurs more increasingly due to the serious air pollution, heavy smoking, expoure to ionized radiation, pollution with heavy metal, and owing to well advanced diagnostic skill, etc. Also lung cancer has the limitation of medical care because metastasis is already shown up in more than half cases when it is first detected through medical examination. Although it is treated with chemoradiation, the rate of deaths from lung cancer is high as well, because blood has a lot of toxicity which give side effects. So it has a low rate of cure. So, the ways of various treatment is being researched to raise the rate of care and decrease the side effects recently, and one of the results is inducing apoptosis which makes use of molecularbiologic diagnosis of lung cancer's cell and using oriental medicine drugs. The purpose of this study is whether apoptosis would happen on the human lung carcinoma cell by treated with Junglyeokdaejosape-tang, Junglyeok-tang Junglyeokdaejosape-tang and Junglyeok-tang has been prescribed for cough, chest pain, and many other similar cases. Cough and chest pain is shown in early lung cancer. That is why we used these prescriptions. Apoptosis happend on the human lung carcinoma A549 cells treated with Jeongiyeokdaejosapye-tang, Jeonglyeok-tang. The concentration-dependent inhibition of cell viability was observed and apoptosis was confirmed by DNA fragmentation. Bcl-2 and COX-2 mRNA expression decreased, but Bax mRNA expression increased, so it was identified with the case of indomethacin known to enhance apoptotic DNA fragmentation. Also expression of the p21, p53, cyclin E, cyclin D1, cytochrome c, caspase-3, and caspase-9 protein increased and the activity of caspase-3 increased, as well. Last, fragmentation of the PARP was shown. The previous and present results indicated that apoptosis of A549 cells by above-mentioned drugs is associated with the blockage of G1/S progression.

Studies on the Growth and Change of Mineral Nutrient Contents in Ginseng (Panax ginseng) Plant During the Growing Process (인삼의 생육과 무기양분의 계절적 변화)

  • Some physiological analysis and the trend of a change in mineral nutrient contents in 2 years old ginseng plants were investigated for 10 times at 15 to 25 days interval from April 25th to October 10. The growth of leaf in size was completed by the beginning of June and that of stem in height by the late of June. The trend of a seasonal change in root weight showed a form of V letter, that is, the weight was de-creased until late of May and increased continuously thereafter up to September. However, the duration of root growth might be dependent on the defoliation. The growth of root in length begins from the beginning of June and stops in the beginning of August. Relative growth rate, net assimilation rate and crop growth rate were all negative values in just after shoot-emergence. The values showed a peak in May and decreased gradually thereafter. The leaf area ratio showed a peak of 76$\textrm{cm}^2$/g in May, and down to 30$\textrm{cm}^2$ /g in the beginning of October. The contents of nitrogen and potassium in aerial part of ginseng plants decreased at the late growing season, but increased on lime. No seasonal changes on phosphate and magnesium were observed. The contents of nitrogen, phosphate and potassium in root decreased rapidly at the maximum growing season for the aerial part and increased gradually thereafter. Whereas no changes on lime and magesium were observed during the growing season.

Gene Expression of Chironomus riparius Heat Shock Protein 70 and Developmental Retardation Exposure to Salinity (염분 노출에 따른 Chironomus riparius의 성장지연과 Heat shock protein 70 유전자 발현)

  • We investigate that the impact of freshwater organism exposed to the salinity environment by the frequent rainfall following climate change. To evaluate the stress response following salinity exposure, we assessed the survival rate, molting success rate, the developmental period and mouthpart deformities in Chironomus riparius. In addition, we measured the molecular responses of biomarker gene, gene expression of heat shock protein 70 (HSP70) in C. riparius exposed to salinity after 96 hour. The C. riparius survival rates were showed on time dependent manner and not observed survival organisms above 15 psu at day 4. The pupation and emergence of C. riparius were not seen above 15 psu, and the molting success rate was less than 20% at 10 psu. The developmental retardation of C. riparius was well observed in the pupation and emergence period and was delayed by 4 days at 10 psu compared to the control and 5 psu. The mouthpart deformities after salinity exposure at 96 or 72 hour were observed at 10 psu and 15 psu. The expression of C. riparius HSP70 level was significantly increased exposure to 5 psu and 10 psu. Thus, salinity has been caused to be various ecotoxicological and molecular stress responses on freshwater organisms similar to harmful substances such as EDCs and so on.

The Destruction of Bacterial Spores Upon Compressional Pressure (타정 압력에 의한 세균포자의 파괴현상)

  • The tolerance of useful bacterial spores to the conditions of tablet making, specifically, the destruction of bacterial spores upon compressional pressure was investigated. The damage of bacterial spores occurred mainly during the tabletting. The bacterial spores obeyed a logarithmic destruction rate upon compressional pressure. The spore destruction rate was dependent upon the strains of microorganism. The Decimal Reduction Pressure, designated as P-value, were $2.9\;ton/cm^2$, $2.6\;ton/cm^2$ and $2.1\;ton/cm^2$ for the spores of Bacillus subtilis, Bacilus coagulans and Clostridium butyricum, respectively, and $1.7\;ton/cm^2$ for the vegetative cell of Streptococcus faecalis. The spore destruction upon compressional pressure was influenced by the type of filler. The P-value of the spore of B. coagulans was $2.8\;ton/cm^2$ in the lactose filler, but $2.0\;ton/cm^2$ in the starch filler. The number of viable spores was inversely proportional to the hardness and density of tablet, in case that the same type of filler was used. The starch filler, which resulted in the lower hardness and lower density of tablet, caused higher spore destruction rate compared with the lactose filler.

Effect of Live Food and Water Temperature on Larval Survival of Red Spotted Grouper, Epinephelus akaara (먹이생물과 수온이 붉바리 자어의 생존에 미치는 영향)

  • Survival rate of larval red spotted grouper, Epinephelus akaara is very low, because mouth size of the larvae is too small to eat normal sizes of rotifers. In order to enhance larval survival, optimal culture conditions for larvae using different live foods and water temperatures were studied. Bigger live food produced larger size of rotifer, when the rotifer was cultured with three different live foods such as Tetraselmis tetrathele, marine Chlorella and Nannochloris oculata. Also, the size of rotifer produced was temperature-dependent showing that higher water temperature induced smaller rotifer. Survial rate of the larvae increased with the increase of water temperature up to $29{\circ}C$. Also, higher larval survials were found at the food density of 15 to 20 individuals per milliliter. The larvae fed L-type or small individuals of L-type rotifer died all within a week, although the larvae fed S-type or small individuals of S-type one survived successfully during this period. The size of small individuals of S-type rotifer collected through fine net became larger in a few hours within larval culture tank. Survival rate of grouper larvae with initial stocking density of 40 thousands in 6-ton concrete tank was 6.3% in 10 days and 0.2% in 53 days after hatching, respectively. Total length of the larvae reached around 29.5 mm in 53days after hatching.

Choosing quality indicators for quality prediction of egg in circulation (계란의 유통 중 품질예측을 위한 품질지표 선정)

  • This study was conducted to identify quality indicators of the freshness of chicken eggs circulating in domestic markets. We first stored freshly-laid eggs at temperatures of 0, 10, 20, and $30^{\circ}C$, investigated their weight-loss rate, specific gravity, color, york index, albumen index, Haugh unit (HU), pH, and sensory evaluation, and finally analyzed the correlation between each quality characteristic and the sensory preference. At all the storage temperatures, the quality characteristics of the weight-loss rate, specific gravity, yolk index, albumen index, and HU showed significant correlations (p<0.05) with the preference. In particular, the temperature-dependent correlation between the quality characteristics and the sensory preference was significantly higher with increasing storage temperatures and weight-loss rates (r = -0.78; r = -0.93; r = -0.95; and r = -0.99), albumen index (r = 0.66; r = 0.89; r = 0.89; and r = 0.93), and HU values (r = 0.64; r = 0.92; r = 0.96; and r = 0.98) at 0, 10, 20, and $30^{\circ}C$, respectively (p<0.01). The Color and pH examinations yielded disparate results, and further research is needed to determine the methods of using the characteristics as quality indicators. We believe that the changes in the weight-loss rate, specific gravity, yolk index, albumen index, and HU are adequate quality indicators of the freshness of egg in circulation.

An Empirical Analysis of the Relationship between Advertisement Expenses and Business Performance (광고선전비와 경영성과 간의 실증적 분석)

  • The purpose of this study is to analyse the overall relationship between the advertisement expenses and the two major indicies of business performance, that is, the total amount of sales and the discipline have contrasted the expenses for commercial advertisement with the total amount of sales or with the business performance, respectively, utilizing data on a specific product observed through 3 to 5 years. This study attempts to enlarge the scope of observation and the content of analysis. In order to attain the purpose of this study, the rate of increase in the advertisement expenses is taken as the independent variable and the two major indicies of business performance, the total amount of sales and the resultant interest, as the dependent variables. Business companies or firms which have continually been listed on the board of Korea Stock Exchange for 14 years, from 1982 to 1995, were grouped into four major business categories; 1)Food and beverage industries, 2)Fiber, clothings, and leather industries, 3) Medicine, chemistry, oil, coal, and rubber industries, and 4) Assembled mechanics and metallurgy, machinery, and maintenance industries. Utilizing the KIS-DATA, compiled by Korea Credit Evaluation, Ltd., 30 to 40 samples of business companies or firms were randomly selected from each category. Finally 125 samples were selected and put into regression analyses and follow-up tests by appropriate statistical models, in order to verify if there were any noticeable correlations. The final result obtained through the afore-mentioned research method shows that the amount of advertisement expenses has strong correlations with the amount of sales and the resultant interest. Viewed by business category, in the case of fiber, clothings, and leather industries, the relationship turned out to be significant only with the rate of increase in the total amount of sales, while, in the case of food and beverage industries, the rate of increase in the total amount of sales showed a negatively significant correlations.

Observation of the Incidence of Acrosome Reaction in Human Spermatozoa Treated with Mibefradil as a T-type $Ca^{2+}i$ Channels Inhibitor (T-형 $Ca^{2+}$ 채널 길항제인 Mibefradil을 첨가한 인간 정자의 첨체반응 관찰)

  • Objective: The sperm acrosome reaction is a $Ca^{2+}$-dependent exocytotic event that is triggered by adhesion to the mammalian egg's zona pellucida. Previous studies suggested a role of $Ca^{2+}$ channels in acrosome reactions. This study was conducted to investigate the T-type calcium channel is operated in acrosome reaction of human spermatozoa. Method: Human semen samples were obtained from healthy donors with normal criteria. The spermatozoa were divided into five groups: Group 1 were non-treated as a control; Group 2 where spermatozoa were exposed to 5 ${\mu}M$ $Ca^{2+}$ A23187 $(Ca^{2+}i)$; Group 3 where spermatozoa were exposed 5 ${\mu}M$ $Ca^{2+}i$ and mibefradil; Group 4 where spermatozoa were exposed 5 ${\mu}M$ $Ca^{2+}i$ and nifedipine, and Group 5 where spermatozoa were treated with 5 ${\mu}M$ $Ca^{2+}i$ and both of mibefradil and nifedipine. Spermatozoa in all groups were retrieved after incubation for 15 and 30 minutes at $37^{\circ}C$. After staining with PSA-FITC, fluorescence was observed under a fluorescence microscope, and AR was evaluated on a total>100 spermatozoa/side. Result and Conclusion: We observed on acrosome reaction inhibition rate in human spermatozoa the various of concentration of mibefradil, nifedipine. Maximum response was noted with 1.0 ${\mu}M$ mibefradil and the decrease of acrosome reaction inhibition rate 45%. Nifedipine in acrosome reaction inhibition rate was only about 25%. The $Ca^{2+}i$-induced AR of spermatozoa was significantly suppressed by mibefradil. Incidence of the suppression was depending on concentration of mibefradil. Results from the present study suggest that the human spermatozoa possess T-type channel. The observation that reversible inhibitor of T channels in male germ cells provides a new mechanism of contraceptive action.

INFLUENCE OF COOLING RATE ON THERMAL EXPANSION BEHAVIOR AND FLEXURAL FAILURE OF PFM SYSTEMS (도재 냉각방법의 차이가 금속-도재간 열팽창 양상과 결합력에 미치는 영향)

  • Although a number of studies have been performed to assure that residual stress caused by a mismatch of alloy porcelain thermal expansion can contribute to clinical failure of a ceramometal restoratoin, the interactive influence of cooling rate on the magnitude of thermal expansion difference and on bond strength between them have not been extensively analyzed. The objective of this study was to determine the influence of cooling rate and the number of firing cycles on the expansion mismatch and the flexural failure resistance of metal porcelain strip. Tested alloys included one Pd-Ag alloy, one Ni-Cr-Be alloy with two kinds of porcelain, Vita and Ceramco. Metal specimens were cast into rods with a height of 13mm and a diameter of 5mm. Subsequently, the castings were subjected to scheduled firing cycles without porcelain. And the porcelain specimens after being fired were trimmed into a bar with a final dimension of 5 x 5 x 25mm. Thermal expansions of the alloys and porcelains were measured by using a push rod or a differential dialometer respectively. Porcelain glass transition temperatures and expansion values were derived alloy- porcelain pairs were assessed by comparing expansion values of the components at a porcelain glass transition temperature. Calculations were made using combinations of a Ni-Cr alloy or Pd-Ag alloy with each of two porcelain products. Metal- porcelain strip specimens were subjected to four point loading in an Instron testing machine until crack occured at the metal-cramic interface at the time of sharp decrease of load on recorder. On the basis of this study, the following conclusions may be stated : 1. Regardless of the kinds of ceramometal combinations, both of calculated and experimental data revealed that the double fired specimens exhibited a significantly lower flexural strength. 2. By the rise of the amount of mismatch, bond strength were decreased. 3. Thermal expansion value of Pd-Ag alloys were higher than of Ni-Cr alloys. 4. Expansion curves of metal were proportional to the increase of temperature and were not affected by the experimental conditions, however porcelains did not show the same magnitude of metal, and a shift of the glass transition temperature to higher temperatures was observed when cooled rapidly. 5. Alloy- porcelain thermal compatibility appeared more dependent on the porcelain than the alloy.
