  • In order to accelerate the rate of consolidation settlement and to gain a required shear strength for a given soft clay deposit, the preloading technique combined with a vertical drainage system has been widely applied. In this'study, the theory of axisymmetric consolidation which considers the variation of compressibility and permeability during the conslidation process, has ben developed. A computer program named AXICON for the analysis of axisymmetric nonlinear consolidation is developed by adopting an explicit finite difference method. Smear and well resistance effects are also considered. The AXICON is capable of analyzing the consolidation behavior of multi -layered deposits and simulates time dependent loading sequence. The results of AXICON are validated with analytical solutions of Hansbo and Barron, and compared with insitu settlements and pore pressures measured in a soft clay deposit.

  • For a one link flexible arm control, quadratic optimal control is applied to the dynamic modilling which is derived from an assumed mode method. For the quadratic optimal control technique, the full state feedback must be obtained for closing the control loop, but because some of the states in the flexible system(e.g. the rate of change of the time dependent variables of the mode shapes) can not be directly measured, state estimator is necessary to achieve the practical implementation of the optimal controller. When disturbances and measurement noise occur, stochastic approach must be applied to estimating the states of the system. Kalman Filter is used as a stste estimator. Through the simulation, the flexible system with state estimator is compared with the flexible system assuming that all the states can be measured.

  • The energy transfer from photoexcited polyvinylcarbazole (PVK) chromophores with a bandgap of 3.7 eV as a donor to fluorophores of poly(dihexylfluorenevinylene) (PDHFV) or poly(dihexylfluorenedihexoxyphenylenevinylene) (PDHFHPV) as an acceptor in bilayered specimens should be carried out since the spectral overlap pairs fulfills the requirement for the $F{\"{o}}rster-type$ condition. However, the energy transfer rate from the chromophores with a wider bandgap to the fluorophores with a narrower bandgap is proved to be strongly dependent on the lifetime ratio between the excitons.

  • Diamond-like carbon(DLC) thin films are produced by using a filtered cathodic vacuum arc(FCVA) deposition system. Different magnetic components, namely steering, focusing, and filtering plasma-optic systems, are used to achieve a stable arc plasma and to prevent the macroparticles from incorporating into the deposited films. Effects of magnetic fields on plasma behavior and film deposition are examined. The carbon ion energy is found to be varied by applying a negative (accelerating) substrate bias voltage. The deposition rate of DLC films is dependent upon magnetic field as well as substrate bias voltage and at a nominal deposition condition is about $2{\AA}/s$. The structural properties of DLC films, such as internal stress, relative fraction of tetrahedral($sp^3$) bonds, and surface roughness have also been characterized as a function of substrate bias voltages and partial gas($N_2$) pressures.

  • The thin films were obtained by plasma polymerization of phenyl isothiocyanate. Polymerizations were carried out in rf(13.56[MHz]) glow discharge generated in an inter-electrode capacitively coupled gas flow system. It was found that this monomer produces uniform films with a wide range of thicknesses, from hundreds of nanometers to tens of micrometers. The deposition rate appeared to be dependent on the substrate distance from the monomer inlet. The IR data revealed significant decrease in -NCS groups content in the polymer as compared with the monomer spectrum and indicated for the appearance of new absorption bands corresponding to the -CN and C-H aliphatic groups. The soluble fraction by GC was found to be composed of numerous low molecular-weight compounds.

  • Changes of phycobiliproteins(PBP) quantity and ferredoxin-NADP reductase(FNR) activity were investigated in various light illuminated cyanobacteria, Anabaena variabilis. PBP components were increased under blue light illumination, whereas decreased under red light illumination. PBP contents were twofolds in blue light than in red light. In view of the PBP composition, allophycocyanin(APC) in red light was higher 5.5% and phycoerythrocyanin(PEC) in blue light was higher 2.2% than in white light-illuminated PBP. It was suggested that PBP changes in bule light be the results of regulation of photosysthetic efficiency and protection of photosystem, whereas PBP changes in red light be effected by adaptation of adequate harvesting of light energy in photosystem. Changes of FNR activity were highest in red light, and sequenced lower to blue light and green light. It means that light-dependent production rate of NADP is the highest in red light. The difference of values was larger than that of values in comparison of red and blue light. It was suggested that increasing of FNR activity be due not to the function of isozyme, but to the synthesis of enzymes. Because of NAD/NADP regulation-effect to metabolism, it was considered that FNR activity might influence the metabolism indirectly and explain the probability of regulation in pathways of key enzyme activation. FNR activity was directly proportional to intensity of light. Optimum temperature and pH were about 25℃ and 7.5, respectively.

  • Modern small modular nuclear reactors can be built on a barge in ocean, therefore, their flow characteristics depend upon the ocean motions. In the present research, effect of rolling motion on flow and friction characteristics of laminar flow through vertical and horizontal narrow channels has been studied. A computer code has been developed using MPS method for two-dimensional Navier-Stokes equations with rolling motion force incorporated. Numerical results have been validated with the literature and have been found in good agreement. It has been found that the impact of rolling motions on flow characteristics weakens with increase in flow rate and fluid viscosity. For vertical narrow channels, the time averaged friction coefficient for vertical channels differed from steady friction coefficient. Furthermore, increasing the horizontal distance from rolling pivot enhanced the flow fluctuations but these stayed relatively unaffected by change in vertical distance of channel from the rolling axis. For horizontal narrow channels, the flow fluctuations were found to be sinusoidal in nature and their magnitude was found to be dependent mainly upon gravity fluctuations caused by rolling.

  • In this paper, main particulars of a ship are optimized by the multiobjective optimization method which can offer more information to designer. To analyze the effect of a ship building cost and operating cost in the optimum design of a ship, the multiobjective optimization is performed with objective functions of building and operating costs. And Required Freight Rate(RFR) is also calculated as dependent variable. The design model was developed for the Liquefied Natural Gas(LNG) carrier with longer operating distance. The LNG carrier has some characteristics such as higher speed and building cost in comparison with other commercial ships.

  • The succinic semialdehyde dehydrogenase (SSADH) inhibitory component was isolated from the EtOAc fraction of Lactuca sativa through repeated column chromatography; then, it was identified as phytol, a diterpenoid, based on the interpretation of several spectral data. Incubation of SSADH with the phytol results in a time-dependent loss of enzymatic activity, suggesting that enzyme modification is irreversible. The inactivation followed pseudo-first-order kinetics with the second-rate order constant of $6.15{\times}10^{-2}mM^{-1}min^{-1}.$ Complete protection from inactivation was afforded by the coenzyme $NAD^{+}$, whereas substrate succinic semialdehyde failed to prevent the inactivation of the enzyme; therefore, it seems likely that phytol covalently binds at or near the active site of the enzyme. It is postulated that the phytol is able to elevate the neurotransmitter GABA levels in central nervous system through its inhibitory action on one of the GABA degradative enzymes, SSADH.

  • Ginsenosides, one of the most well-known traditional herbal medicines, are used frequently in Korea for the treatment of cardiovascular symptoms. The effects of ginseng saponin on ischemia-induced isolated rat heart were investigated through analyses of hemodynamic changes including perfusion pressure, aortic flow, coronary flow, and cardiac output. Isolated rat hearts were perfused and then subjected to 30 min of global ischemia followed by 60 min of reperfusion with modified Kreb's Henseleit solution. Myocardial contractile function was continuously recorded. Ginseng saponin administered before inducing ischemia significantly prevented decreases in perfusion pressure, aortic flow, coronary flow, and cardiac output. The ginseng saponin administered group significantly recovered all of the hemodynamic parameters, except heart rate, after ischemia-reperfusion (I/R) compared with ischemia control. The intracellular calcium ($[Ca^{2+}]_i$) content in rat neonatal cardiomyocytes was quantitatively determined. Administration of ginseng saponin significantly prevented $[Ca^{2+}]_i$ increase that had been induced by simulated I/R in vitro (p<0.01) in a dose-dependent manner, suggesting that the cardioprotection of ginseng saponin is mediated by the inhibition of $[Ca^{2+}]_i$ increase. Overall, we found that the administration of ginseng saponin has cardioprotective effects on the isolated rat heart after I/R injury. These results indicate that ginseng saponin has distinct cardioprotective effects in an I/R-induced rat heart.
