To make the soil moisture proper is the important factor in the seedbed cultivation of Yangjik for producing a good quality of ginseng seedling. This study was carries out to investigate the effect of soil moisture on photosynthesis and yield of ginseng seedling under the different condition of the soil moisture, such as $100{\sim}400$ mbar. Photosynthesis rate was decreased gradually by the reduction of soil moisture, and in particular it was decreased distinctly under the lower condition of soil moisture, such as $300{\sim}400$ mbar. Photosynthesis rate in air temperature of $30^{\circ}C$ was decreased more distinct than that of $25^{\circ}C$, Light saturation point of leaves was at the quantum of $600{\mu}mol/m^3/s$ at $25^{\circ}C$ while it was decreased by $300{\mu}mol/m^3/s$ at $30^{\circ}C$ according to the increase of air temperature. Respiration rate was increased by the increase of quantum, and decreased by the reduction of soil moisture. Respiration rate under the condition of high quantum was increased regardless of air temperature, but it was decreased distinctly under the condition of low soil moisture and high air temperature, such as 400 mbar at $30^{\circ}C$. There were a gradual decrease by the reduction of soil moisture in leaf length, leaf width, chlorophyll content, and water content of leaves, but heat injury ratio was increased distinctly by the reduction of it. Total root weight, root weight per plant, the yield of usable seedling were decreased by the reduction of soil moisture, and optimal content of soil moisture to produce a good quality of seedling was 63% of field capacity or 18.9% in absolute soil moisture content.
A packed bed of volcanic rock was used as deodorizing material to remove hydrogen sulfide($H_2$S) from air in a laboratory-scale column, and was inoculated with Thiobacillus sp. as $H_2S$ oxidizer. The effects of volcanic rock particle size distribution on system pressure drop were examined. Various tests have been conducted to evaluate the effect of $H_2S$ inlet concentration and CBCT(Empty Bed Contact Time) on $H_2S$ elimination. The pressure drop for particles of size range from 5.6 to 10 mm was 14 mm$H_2S$/m at a representative gas velocity of 0.25m/s. Biofilter using scoria and Thiobacillus sp. could get the stable removal efficiencies more than 99.9% under $H_2S$ inlet concentrations in the range from 30 to 1,100ppm at a constant gas flow rate of $15.2{\ell}$/min. $H_2S$ removal efficiencies greater than 99% were observed as long as EBCT was longer than 8sec at the 250ppm of $H_2S$ inlet concentration. When EBCT was reduced to 5.5 sec, $H_2S$ removal efficiency decreased by about 12 percent. The maximum $H_2S$ elimination capacity was determined to be 269g-$H_2S/m^3{\cdot}hr$.
In this work, a new method that utilizes L-cysteine salicylaldehyde Schiff-base modified macroporous polystyrene resin (PS-CSC) as an effective sorbent has been developed for preconcentration of trace cadmium and lead in environmental water samples. The effect of pH, the contact time, the elution conditions, the flow rate, the initial concentration of target metal ions, and the effects of interfering ions on the preconcentration of the analytes were investigated. The maximum adsorption capacity of PS-CSC under optimum conditions for cadmium and lead were found to be 6.03 - 18.17 mg/g and 12.58 - 36.13 mg/g when the initial concentration of metal ions between 5.0 - 90 mg/L. The limits of detection for cadmium and lead were 2.46 ng/L and $0.52{\mu}g/L$, with a preconcentration factor of 200. The developed method has been validated by analyzing certified reference material and successfully applied for the enrichment and determination of trace cadmium and lead from environmental water samples.

Water hammer pumps can effectively use the water hammer phenomenon in long-distance pipeline networks that include pumps and allow fluid transport without drive sources, such as electric motors. The results of experiments that examined the effect of the geometric form of water hammer pumps by considering their major dimensions have been reported. In addition, a paper has also been published analyzing the water hammer phenomenon numerically by using the characteristic curve method for comparison with experimental results. However, these conventional studies have not fully evaluated the pump performance in terms of pump head and flow rate, common measures indicating the performance of pumps. Therefore, as a first stage for the understanding of water hammer pump performance in comparison with the characteristics of typical turbo pumps, the previous paper experimentally examined how the hydrodynamic characteristics were affected by the inner diameter ratio of the drive and lifting pipes, the form of the air chamber, and the angle of the drive pipe. To understand the behavior of the components attached to the valve chamber and the air chamber that affects the performance of water hammer pumps, the previous study also determined the relationship between the water hammer pump performance and temporal changes in valve chamber and air chamber pressures according to the air chamber capacity. For the geometry of components attached to the drain valve, which is another major component of water hammer pumps, this study experimentally examines how the water hammer pump performance is affected by the length of the spring and the angle of the drain pipe.
Coalbed methane has a nonlinear desorption curve depending on the pressure, so an appropriate production system should be constructed considering this phenomenon. The capacity and specification of the coalbed methane gas production facility are determined by the gas flow rate and pressure in the coalbed, which is the external boundary condition of the system. Thus, it is essential to analyze these characteristics in gas production. The gas inflow equation was calculated using the reservoir flow model and utilized as the boundary condition of the whole production facility in this study. Also, to understand the effect of pressure drop on the gas flow in the production facility, the nodal analysis was performed using the flow analysis simulator of production equipment, and we determined the proper specifications and operating conditions of the production facility. This study presents a design criteria as to production and gathering system capable of effectively transporting coalbed methane.
The adsorption characteristics of Sr ions and Cs ions in single and binary solution by zeolite A were investigated in batch experiment. The adsorption rate of Sr ions and Cs ions by zeolite A obeyed pseudo-second-order kinetic model in single and binary solution. The initial adsorption rates (h) and adsorption capacities of both ions obtained from pseudo-second-order kinetic model, and the values were decreased with increasing concentration of the competitive ions (0~1.5 mM). Also, adsorption isotherm data in binary solution were well fitted to the extended Langmuir model, the maximum adsorption capacities of Sr and Cs calculated from the model were 1.78 mmol/g and 1.64 mmol/g, respectively. The adsorption of Sr and Cs ions by zeolite A was carried out in the presence of other cations such as $Na^+$, $K^+$, $Mg^{2+}$ and $Ca^{2+}$. The results showed that the zeolite A can maintain a relatively high adsorption capacity for Sr and Cs ions and exhibits a high selectivity in the presence of competitive cations. The effect of competition had an order of $Ca^{2+}$ > $K^+$ > $Mg^{2+}$ > $Na^+$ for Sr ions and $K^+$ > $Ca^{2+}$ > $Na^+$ > $Mg^{2+}$ for Cs ions at the same cation concentration.
An optimum dietary carbohydrate content is important for maximum fish growth. In this study, we fed Wuchang bream (Megalobrama amblycephala) with either control diet (30.42%) or high carbohydrate diet (52.92%) for 90 d. Fish were fed to apparent satiation three times daily in an aquarium with automatic temperature control and circulated water. Growth performance, plasma biochemical parameters, hepatic morphology and enzyme activities were determined. It was shown that compared to fish fed control diet, fish fed high carbohydrate diet had higher plasma triglyceride and cortisol levels for d 90, and lower alkaline phosphatase level for d 45, lower hepatic superoxide dismutase and total antioxidative capacity for d 90, higher malondialdehyde for d 45 and glycogen content for d 45 and 90 (p<0.05). Histological and transmission electron microscopy studies showed that hepatocytes of fish fed high carbohydrate diet contained large lipid droplets, causing displacement of cellular organelles to periphery of hepatocytes. The relative level of hepatic heat shock protein 70 (HSP70) mRNA of Wuchang bream fed high carbohydrate diet was significantly higher than that of fish fed the control diet for 90 d (p<0.05). These changes led to decreased specific growth rate and increased feed conversion ratio (p<0.05). Upon hypoxia challenge, fish fed high carbohydrate diet had higher cumulative mortality than those fed the control diet (p<0.05). These results suggested that high dietary carbohydrate (52.92%) was detrimental to the growth performance and health of Wuchang bream.
This study is aimed to investigate how the structure of Korean and Chinese fisheries has been changed since the Fisheries Agreement between Korea and China came into effect. This investigation was accomplished from a comparative point of view by using statistic data in the literatures published by both Korea and China. Results of this study are summarized as follows; First, it was revealed that the decreasing rate of fish production of marine capture fisheries in Korea was lowered more by 5.1%, while it was decreased by only 0.1% in China. Second, comparative results on changes in production of offshore fisheries showed that the production of Korean offshore fisheries in 2003 was reduced by 26% compared to that in 1999, while the production of China offshore fisheries was decreased by 22%. In addition, although the production of marine capture fisheries in the East region of China was reduced by 10%, on the contrary, the production of marine capture fisheries in Liaoning, Hebei, Tianjin, Jiangsu, Zhejiang, and Fujian that have mostly impacted by the Korea-China Fisheries Agreement was increased by 7%. Third, results on fishing capacity of marine fisheries indicated that the number of vessels and total horse power in Korea were increased by 1.2% and 44.9%, respectively, while total tonnage was reduced by 23.9%, For China, the number of vessels and total horse power were increased by 0.5% and 12.6%, respectively. Total tonnage was also increased by 11.7%. Finally, the production per Korean vessel was decreased by 17.8% in 2003 compared to that in 1999. On the contrary, the production per Chinese vessel was increased by 8.1% in 2003. The production per tonnage was increased by 3.2% in Korea, while it was reduced by 2.7% in China. In conclusion, it could be said that the Korea-China Fisheries Agreement has had a positive impact on the fisheries production of China, while it has had a negative impacts on that of Korea, relatively.

One method of increasing the heat-transfer rate is to increase the heat-transfer area. In this study, we test a wide louver fin-and-tube heat exchanger with $P_t/P_l$ = 1.03, and we compare the results with those of a louver fin-andtube heat exchanger with $P_t/P_l$ = 0.6. The results obtained show that the heat-transfer capacities of the wide louver samples are larger (16% in one row, 29% in two rows, and 38% in three row samples) than those of the louver samples. Considering the area ratio of 2.17, the increase in the heat-transfer capacity is somewhat small. The reason for this may be due to the smaller heat-transfer coefficient and fin efficiency of the wide louver sample. The effect of the fin pitch on the j and f factors are not profounded. The j and f factors decreased as the number of tube rows increased. We compare the data obtained with existing correlations.
The developmental capacity of bovine oocytes under three different culture systems was investigated in this experiment ; One was culture in TCM199 with bovine oviductal epithelial cells(BOEC) for in vitro culture, another was culture in TCM199 with BOEC for 2 days and then transfer of 4~8cell embryos to rabbit oviduct(RO) and the other was transfer of 1 or 2cell embryos to RO for in vivo culture. And the other concern of this experiment was to investigate the effect of culture period and transfer site on recovery. Immature bovine oocytes were cultured in TCM199 with granulosa cells for 22-24hrs and then fertilized in vitro using frozen-thawed semen treated with BO-caffine and BO-BSA. Fifteen to 18hrs after in vitro fertilization oocytes were cultured in TCM199 with BOEC or transferred to RO for 5 days. The rate of development to the morula or blastocyst was higher in transfer of 1 or 2cell embryos to RO(23.1%) than culture in TCM199 with BOEC(11.7%). But, there was no difference between transfer of 1 or 2cell embryos and transfer of 4~8cell embryos to RO(12.8%). Recovery under different culture periods in RO was significantly higher in 90~95hrs(70.1%) than 122~125hrs(50.9%, p<0.05) and recovery significantly increased when oocytes were transferred deeper in RO(2.5cm>, 47.7% ; 2.5~4.5cm, 63.9% ; 4.5cm<, 77.3%, p<0.05). The results show that transfer of 1 or 2cell embryos to RO is an effective means of supporting the further development of in vitro matured and fertilized bovine oocytes than culture in TCM199 with BOEC or transfer of 4~8cell embryos to RO, and recovery from RO increases when oocytes are transferred deeper and incubated shorter in RO.
