  • Hot-wire measurements of second and third-order mean products of velocity fluctuations have been made in the separated, reattached, and redeveloping boundary layer behind a vertical fence. Mean velocity, wall static pressure distributions have also been measured in the whole flow field. Upstream of the reattachment point, the separated shear layer developes as a free mixing layer, but the gradient of the maximum slope thickness, turbulent intensities and the Reynolds shear stress are higher than that of the mixing layer due to initial streamline curvature and the effects of highly turbulent recirculating flow region. In the reattachment region, Reynolds shear stress and triple products near the surface is far more rapid than the decrease of the shear stress; that is the presence of the solid wall has a marked effect on the apparent gradient diffusivity of intensity or shear stress and throws doubts upon the usefulness of the simple gradient diffusivity model in this region.

  • In this work, MOS capacitors were used to study the electrical properties of Mo gate electrode deposited on ZrO$_2$. The workfunctions of Mo gate extracted from C-V curves were appropriate for PMOS. Thermal stability of Mo metal was investigated by analyzing the variations of workfunction and EOT(effective oxide thickness) after 600, 700, and 800 $^{\circ}C$ RTA(rapid thermal annealing). It was found that Mo gate was stable up to 800 $^{\circ}C$ with underlying ZrO$_2$. The resistivities of Mo were 35$\mu$$.$cm∼ 75$\mu$$.$cm. These values are lower than those of heavily doped polysilicon. Based on these measurements, it can be concluded that Mo metal gate with ZrO$_2$ gate insulator is an excellent gate material for PMOS.

  • Germanium nanocrystals(NCs) were formed in the silicon dioxide($SiO_2$) on Si layers by Ge implantation and rapid thermal annealing process. The density and mean size of Ge-NCs heated at $800^{\circ}C$ during 10 min were confirmed by High Resolution Transmission Electron Microscopy. Capacitance versus voltage(C-V) measurements of MOS capacitors with single $Al_2O_3$ capping layers were performed in order to study electrical properties. The C-V results exhibit large threshold voltage shift originated by charging effect in Ge-NCs, revealing the possibility that the structure is applicable to Nano Floating Gate Memory(NFGM) devices.

  • This paper applies a compensated low pass filter (LPF) to current measurements for permanent magnet synchronous motor (PMSM) drives. The noise limits the bandwidth of current controllers and has more adverse influences on control performances under the light load condition because of the low signal-to-noise ratio. In order to eliminate the noise sensitivity, this paper proposes a digital LPF with a compensator of gain attenuation and phase delay which are unacceptable in current information for PMSM drives. Characteristics of the proposed LPF are analyzed in comparison with the general LPFs. The compensated LPF is basically designed by the orthogonal property of the measured currents in the ${\alpha}{\beta}$ stationary reference frame. In addition, an implementation issue of the proposed method is discussed. Experimental results using the proposed method show improvements of the current control performance from two perspectives, rapid step responses and reductions of harmonic distortion.

  • Purpose: Cheese texture is an important sensory attribute mainly considered for consumers' acceptance. The feasibility of nondestructive measurements of cheese texture was explored using non-contact ultrasonic sensors. Methods: A novel non-contact air instability compensation ultrasonic technique was used for five varieties of hard cheeses to measure ultrasonic parameters, such as velocity and attenuation coefficient. Five texture properties, such as fracturability, hardness, springiness, cohesiveness, and chewiness were assessed by a texture profile analysis (TPA) and correlated with the ultrasonic parameters. Results: Texture properties of five varieties of hard cheese were estimated using ultrasonic parameters with regression analysis models. The most effective model predicted the fracturability, hardness, springiness, and chewiness, with the determination coefficients of 0.946 (RMSE = 21.82 N), 0.944 (RMSE = 63.46 N), 0.797 (RMSE = 0.06 ratio), and 0.833 (RMSE = 17.49 N), respectively. Conclusions: This study demonstrated that the non-contact air instability compensation ultrasonic sensing technique can be an effective tool for rapid and non-destructive determination of cheese texture.

  • An experimental and theoretical study on a pneumatic servo system has been conducted using on-off valves and a pneumatic cylinder. A V/I converter has been designed for rapid rising and falling of the solenoid current, which significantly improves the positioning accuracy and settling time of the servo system by shortening the valve opening time. Pulse width modulation was modified to operate on-off valves effectively. A state feedback controller which feeds back position, velocity and acceleration is used to control the system. The influence of controller gains on the system performance is studied to develop a scheme that automatically adjusts the gains using fuzzy logic theory. It is shown experimentally that the proposed fuzzy logic tuner works satisfactorily. A new method for measurements of valve effective areas is proposed, and a partially polytropic model is applied to simulation of the pneumatic system. Simulated results show good agreement with experimental data.

  • Photoinduced electron-transfer process of 1,8-naphthalimide-linker-trimethylsilane (NI-O3-TMS, O3 = 3,6,9-trioxaundecyl) and NI-O3 has been investigated using the transient absorption measurements in $CH_3CN$ and $CH_3CN/H_2O$. The excitation of NI-O3-TMS in $CH_3CN$ produced the NI radical anion ($NI^{{\cdot}-}$) with a transient absorption band around 413 nm, via the intermolecular electron-transfer between NI moieties in the excited singlet state. In contrast, in a protic polar solvent mixture of $CH_3CN/H_2O$, a proton abstraction process occurred from $NI^{{\cdot}-}$ to generate the NI ketyl radical ($NIH^{\cdot}$), which showed a transient absorption band around 405 nm. The decay time constants of $NIH^{\cdot}$ were quite long compared to those of $NI^{{\cdot}-}$ in $CH_3CN$.

  • Registration between image and object space is a fundamental step in photogrammetry and computer vision. Along with rapid development of sensors - multi/hyper spectral sensor, laser scanning sensor, radar sensor etc., the needs for registration between different sensors are ever increasing. There are two important considerations on different sensor registration. They are sensor invariant feature extraction and correspondence between them. Since point to point correspondence does not exist in image and laser scanning data, it is necessary to have higher entities for extraction and correspondence. This leads to modify first, existing mathematical and geometrical model which was suitable for point measurement to line measurements, second, matching scheme. In this research, linear feature is selected for sensor invariant features and matching entity. Linear features are incorporated into mathematical equation in the form of extended collinearity equation for registration problem known as photo resection which calculates exterior orientation parameters. The other emphasis is on the scheme of finding matched entities in the aide of RANSAC (RANdom SAmple Consensus) in the absence of correspondences. To relieve computational load which is a common problem in sampling theorem, deterministic sampling technique and selecting 4 line features from 4 sectors are applied.

  • For crystalline slags, of which the viscosity rapidly increases at $T_{cv}$ due to the formation of crystalline phases, the Tcv is affected by measurement conditions. In this study, we investigated the effect of cooling rate, and alumina dissolution on the determination of $T_{cv}$. Using synthetic slag samples based on the composition of Alaska Usibelli slag, $T_{cv}$ were determined under a constant cooling rate of $2^{\circ}C$/min, and under rapid cooling with holding time to allow the slag to reach thermal and rheological equilibrium. The effect of alumina dissolution was investigated using platinum lined crucibles. The constant cooling resulted in lower $T_{cv}$ by $33^{\circ}C$ as compared to the equilibrium measurements. Under $2^{\circ}C$/min cooling, the blocking alumina dissolution resulted in lower $T_{cv}$ by $23^{\circ}C$. When the $T_{cv}$ was measured under $2^{\circ}C$/min cooling using an alumina crucible, therefore, the effects of a constant cooling is somewhat offset by the alumina dissolution effect, and bring the measured value closer to the true value.

  • Shallow $p^{+}$ n junction was formed using a ULE(ultra low energy) implanter. Deactivation phenomena were investigated for the shallow source/drain junction based on measurements of post-annealing time and temperature following the rapid thermal annealing(RTA) treatments. We found that deactivation kinetics has two regimes such that the amount of deactivation increases exponentially with annealing temperature up to $850^{\circ}C$ and that it decreases linearly with the annealing temperature beyond that temperature. We believe that the first regime is kinetically limited while the second one is thermodynamically limited. We also observed "transient enhanced deactivation", an anomalous increase in sheet resistance during the early stage of annealing at temperatures higher than X$/^{\circ}C$. Activation energy for transient enhanced deactivation was measured to be 1.75-1.87 eV range, while that for normal deactivation was found to be between 3.49-3.69 eV.
