  • Position estimation in indoor is significant problem, because GPS which is usually used for outdoor positioning cannot be utilized to indoor positioning. Sensor network can be a solution for the positioning. Recently, chirp spread spectrum(CSS) specified in IEEE 802.15.4a provides an ability of ranging. Based on the results of the ranging, a position of a CSS node can be calculated by using trilateration. In this case, Kalman filter can be applied to the trilateration because of the measurement noise. In this paper, we apply the unscented Kalman filter for the trilateration. The trilateration can be represented to a nonlinear state space equation, and the unscented Kalman filter is suitable for nonlinear state space equation. Through the experimental results. we show the accuracy of the estimated position.

  • Numerical simulations are conducted for the analysis of a thermal mass air flow sensor with periodic heating pulses on silicon-nitride ($Si_3N_4$) thin membrane structure. This study aims to find the locations of temperature sensors on the thin membrane and the heating pulse conditions, that the higher sensitivity can be achieved, for the development of a MEMS fabricated mass air flow sensor which is driven in periodic heating pulse. The simulations, thus, focus on the membrane temperature profile according to variation of the flow velocity, heating duration time and imposed power. The flow velocity of the simulations is ranging from 3 m/s to 35 m/s, heating duration time from 1 ms to 3 ms and imposed power from 50 mW to 90 mW. The corresponding Reynolds numbers vary from 1000 to 10000.

  • Numerical simulations are conducted for the design of a micro thermal mass air flow sensor (MAFS), which consists of a microfabricated heater and thermopiles on the silicon-nitride ($Si_3N_4$) thin membrane structure. It is important to find the proper locations of these thermal elements in the design of MAFS with improved sensitivity. Three heating modes of the micro-heater are considered: constant temperature, constant power and heating pulses. The analyses are focused on the membrane temperature profile near the sensing section. Considered are the practical flow velocities, ranging from 3 m/s to 35 m/s, and the corresponding Reynolds numbers from 1000 to 10000. The results show that one of optimum sensing locations is about $100{\mu}m$ away from the microheater. It is concluded that the heating mode and configurations of thermal elements are the main factors for the MAFS with higher sensitivity.

  • An amperometric ascorbic acid selective sensor utilizing the transfer reaction of proton liberated from the dissociation of ascorbic acid in aqueous solution across an elliptic micro-hole water/organic gel interface is demonstrated. This redox inactive sensing platform offers an alternative way for the detection of ascorbic acid to avoid a fouling effect which is one of the major concerns in redox based sensing systems. The detection principle is simply measuring the current change with respect to the assisted transfer of protons by a proton selective ionophore (e.g., ETH 1778) across the micro-hole interface between the water and the polyvinylchloride-2-nitrophenyloctylether gel phase. The assisted transfer reaction of protons generated from ascorbic acid across the polarized micro-hole interface was first characterized using cyclic voltammetry. An improved sensitivity for the quantitative analysis of ascorbic acid was achieved using differential pulse stripping voltammetry with a linear response ranging from 1 to $100\;{\mu}M$ concentrations of ascorbic acid. As a demonstration, the developed sensor was applied for analyzing the content of vitamin-C in different types of commercial pharmaceutical tablets and syrups, and a satisfactory recovery from these samples were also obtained.

  • Three-dimensional data has been used for different applications such as robotics, building reconstruction, and so on. 3D data can be generated from an optical camera or a laser scanner. Especially, a wearable multi-sensor system including the above-mentioned sensors is an optimized structure that can overcome the drawbacks of each sensor. After finding the geometric relationships between sensors, georeferencing of the datasets acquired from the moving system, should be carried out. Especially, in an indoor environment, error propagation always causes problem in the georeferencing process. To improve the accuracy of this process, other sources of data were used to combine with LiDAR (Light Detection and Ranging) data, and various registration methods were also tested to find the most suitable way. More specifically, this paper proposed a new process of NDT (Normal Distribution Transform) to register the LiDAR point cloud, with additional information from other sensors. For real experiment, a wearable mapping system was used to acquire datasets in an indoor environment. The results showed that applying the new process of NDT and combining LiDAR data with IMU (Inertial Measurement Unit) information achieved the best result with the RMSE 0.063 m.

  • In this study, a small autonomous driving robot was developed for underground mines using the Light Detection and Ranging (LiDAR) sensor. The developed robot measures the distances to the left and right wall surfaces using the LiDAR sensor, and automatically controls its steering to drive along the centerline of mine tunnel. A field experiment was conducted in an underground amethyst mine to test the driving performance of developed robot. During five repeated driving tests, the robot showed stable driving performance overall. There were no collision accidents with the wall of mine tunnel.

  • This paper addresses the implementation of an on-device AI-based metal detection system using a Magneto-Impedance Sensor. Performing calculations on the AI device itself is essential, especially for unmanned aerial vehicles such as drones, where communication capabilities may be limited. Consequently, a system capable of analyzing data directly on the device is required. We propose a lightweight gated recurrent unit (GRU) model that can be operated on a drone. Additionally, we have implemented a real-time detection system on a CPU embedded system. The signals obtained from the Magneto-Impedance Sensor are processed in real-time by a Raspberry Pi 4 Model B. During the experiment, the drone flew freely at an altitude ranging from 1 to 10 meters in an open area where metal objects were placed. A total of 20,000,000 sequences of experimental data were acquired, with the data split into training, validation, and test sets in an 8:1:1 ratio. The results of the experiment demonstrated an accuracy of 94.5% and an inference time of 9.8 milliseconds. This study indicates that the proposed system is potentially applicable to unmanned metal detection drones.

  • Recent LiDAR(Light Detection And Ranging) sensor is used for scanning object around in real-time. This sensor can detect movement of the object and how it has changed. As the production cost of the sensors has been decreased, LiDAR begins to be used for various industries such as facility guard, smart city and self-driving car. However, LiDAR has a large input data size due to its real-time scanning process. So another way for processing a large amount of data are needed in LiDAR system because it can cause a bottleneck. This paper proposes edge computing to compress massive point cloud for processing quickly. Since laser's reflection range of LiDAR sensor is limited, multiple LiDAR should be used to scan a large area. In this reason multiple LiDAR sensor's data should be processed at once to detect or recognize object in real-time. Edge computer compress point cloud efficiently to accelerate data processing and decompress every data in the main cloud in real-time. In this way user can control LiDAR sensor in the main system without any bottleneck. The system we suggest solves the bottleneck which was problem on the cloud based method by applying edge computing service.

  • Ultrasonic sensors are widely used in mobile robot applications to recognize external environments, because they are cheap, easy to use, and robust under varying lighting conditions. However, the recognition of objects using a ultrasonic sensor is not so easy due to its characteristics such as narrow beam width and no reflected signal from a inclined object. As one of the alternatives to resolve these problems, use of multiple sensors has been studied. A sequential driving system needs a long measurement time and does not take advantage of multiple sensors. Simultaneous and pulse coding driving system of ultrasonic sensor array cannot measure short distance as the length of the code becomes long. This problem can be resolved by multi-frequency driving of ultrasonic sensors, which allows multi-sensors to be fired simultaneously and adjacent objects to be distinguished. Accordingly, this paper presents a simultaneous and multi-frequency driving system for an ultrasonic sensor array for object recognition. The proposed system is designed and implemented using a DSP and FPGA. A micro-controller board is made using a DSP, Polaroid 6500 ranging modules are modified for firing the multi-frequency signals, and a 5-channel frequency modulated signal generating board is made using a FPGA. To verify the proposed method, experiments were conducted in an environment with overlapping signals, and the flight distances for each sensor were obtained from filtering of the received overlapping signals and calculation of the time-of-flights.
