  • An experimental study was carried out to investigate the effects of using various shapes of turbulence promoter on the heat-transfer enhancement of 2-D and 3-D arrays of rectangular modules in a rectangular channel for design of noiseless and low-powered cooling fan in the electronic systems. Measurements of heat/mass transfer coefficients were made using a naphthalene sublimation technique, and the friction factors were measured for Reynolds numbers in the range$3.3{\time}10^3$~$1.6{\time}10^4$. Flow visualization was peformed by oil-film method. It was found that heat transfer and pressure drop increased remarkably due to the existence of the promoter. The results of the performance evaluation based on equal pumping power were showed that substantial heat-transfer enhancement was obtained at low Reynolds number range by use of a turbulence promoter.

  • The melting phenomena of horizontal cylindrical ice-bar immersed in water and air concentrically in the cylinder are experimentally investigated for the temperature range from $3.5^{\circ}C\;to\;2.5^{\circ}C$. The shapes of the melting ice-bar are recorded photographically by the shadowgraph method. The shadowgraphs of the melting ice-bar show that water adjacent to the bar flows upward for the temperature range from $3.5^{\circ}C\;to\;5.8^{\circ}C$ while above $5.8^|\circ}C$ the flow is downward direction. The local and average Nusselt numbers are obtoined with the recorded shadowgraphs and comparator. Melting shapes of the ice-bar in the air show the vortex motion in the bottom portion of the bar, whereas no vortex motion appears in the bottom portion when the bar is melted in the water.

  • Improving the plant protection system against unforeseen changes/transients during operation is essential to maintain plant safety. Under this condition, it requires rapid and accurate signal processing. The use of an Intellectual Property (IP) core for floating point calculations for Safety Critical MMIS can make numerical computations easier and more precise, improving system accuracy. It can represent and manipulate rational numbers as well as a much broader range of values with dynamic range in nuclear power plant. Systems engineering approach (SE) is used through the development process, it helps to reduce complexity and avoid omissions and invalid assumptions as delivers a better understanding of the stakeholders needs. For the implementation on the FPGA target board, the 32-bit floating-point arithmetic with IEEE-754 standards has designed using Simulink model in Matlab for all operations of addition, subtraction, multiplication and division and VHDL code generated.

  • For the past three decades, ship-to-ship collision accidents have steadily increased on the coast of South Korea by about 20% annually. Marine accidents have become more likely and more devastating in areas with increasing marine traffic and rising numbers of high-speed ships. Over 30% of the marine accidents in South Korea are concentrated in spring, since Korea's coast is often covered in dense fog at this time of the year. Fog is generated when a large temperature range exists within a day, and this daily temperature range has increased due to abnormal weather conditions. This research proposed a system for transmitting a navigator's intention utilizing electronic methods. A navigator's intention was expressed on the electronic navigation chart for easier understanding of the surrounding situation, and the effectiveness of the system was verified through practical tests.

  • There were several numbers of studies on chemically strengthening glass. Most of them were strengthened in molten salt bath below transformation range of glass. Apart from them, this study used solution hydration technique by Autoclave. After determining proper concentration of AgNO3 salt solution, experimental condition varied from 4hrs to 16hrs at relatively low temperature (180, 200, 220$^{\circ}C$). The results showed that the Soda-Lime-Silica glass could be strengthened by diffusion mechanism without influence of water above 15% salt solution. Because of Ag+ ion penetration in glass surface, yellow color appeared and decreased transmittance at visible range. Modulus of rupture was increased with the amount of exchange and brittleness was decreased.

  • An experiment was conducted to investigate the aerodynamic losses of high pressure steam turbine nozzle (526A) subjected to a large range of incident angles ($-34^{\circ}\;to\;26^{\circ}$) and exit Mach numbers (0.6 and 1.15). Measurements included downstream Pitot probe traverses, upstream total pressure, and end wall static pressures. Flow visualization techniques such as shadowgraph and color oil flow visualization were performed to complement the measured data. When the exit Mach number for nozzles increased from 0.9 to 1.1 the total pressure loss coefficient increased by a factor of 7 as compared to the total pressure losses measured at subsonic conditions ($M_2<0.9$). For the range of incidence tested, the effect of flow incidence on the total pressure losses is less pronounced. Based on the shadowgraphs taken during the experiment, it' s believed that the large increase in losses at transonic conditions is due to strong shock/ boundary layer interaction that may lead to flow separation on the blade suction surface.

  • Nonlinear dynamics of pulsating instability in radiating counterflow diffusion flames is numerically investigated by imposing Damk$\ddot{o}$hler number perturbation. Stable limit-cycle solutions occur in small ranges of Damk$\ddot{o}$hler numbers past bifurcation point of instability. Period doubling cascade and chaotic behaviors appear just before dynamic extinction occurs. Nonlinear dynamics is also studied when large disturbances are imposed to flames. For weak steady flames, the dynamic extinction range shrinks as the magnitudes of disturbances are increased. However, strong steady flames can overcome relatively large disturbances, thereby the dynamic extinction range extending. Stable limit-cycle behaviors reappears prior to dynamic extinction when the steady flames are strong enough.

  • The chromosome constitutions in two cases of uterine carcinoma were studied in vitro with particular interest to the non-random distribution. The results obtained are as follows: 1. The chromosome numbers of one case were found within a normal diploid range with mode at 46, while those of the other were whithin hypotriploid range with mode at 60. 2. The data from the latter case indicated possible existence of non-random distribution of chromosome.

  • Students might find different solutions to the quadratic inequalities according to the range of the number representing the character of the inequalities. They have confusion when the roots of a quadratic inequality are complex numbers since the character of the inequalities generally represents the real number in the mathematics textbooks. Therefore we suggest that we must explain definitely the range of the number representing the character for each inequality question.

  • This study of thermal convection uses the following geometry: a horizontal layer of fluid heated from below of solid lid at bottom and cooled from above. A variety range of thermal conductivity ratio, $\kappa$ is considered to investigate the interface temperature, $\theta_{i}$ between solid and fluid region. Periodic boundary conditions are employed in the horizontal direction to allow for lateral freedom for the convection cells. A two-dimensional solution for unsteady natural convection is obtained, using an accurate and efficient Chebyshev spectral multi-domain methodology, for different effective Rayleigh numbers, $Ra_{eff}$ varying over the range of $10^{4}\;to\;10^{7}$ in which the effective Rayleigh number is defined as $Ra{\times}<\overline{T}_{i}>$.
