  • We present an efficient data structure to obtain the range minima in an away in constant time. Recently, suffix ways are extensively used to search DNA sequences fast in bioinformatics. In constructing suffix arrays, solving the range minima problem is necessary When we construct suffix arrays, we should solve the range minima problem not only in a time-efficient way but also in a space-efficient way. The reason is that DNA sequences consist of millions or billions of bases. Until now, the most efficient data structure to find the range minima in an way in constant time is based on the method that converts the range minima problem in an array into the LCA (Lowest Common Ancestor) problem in a Cartesian tree and then converts the LCA problem into the range minima problem in a specific array. This data structure occupies O( n) space and is constructed in O(n) time. However since this data structure includes intermediate data structures required to convert the range minima problem in an array into other problems, it requires large space (=13n) and much time. Our data structure is based on the method that directly solves the range minima problem. Thus, our data structure requires small space (=5n) and less time in practice. As a matter of course, our data structure requires O(n) time and space theoretically.

  • Two siphonous green algae were collected from the eastern coast of Korea. These species share the typical features of Derbesia sporophytes, such as erect and prostrate siphonous filaments and the presence of basal septum in lateral branches. One is characterized by the combined features of a relatively small tufted sporophytic thalli arising from a rhizoidal base, subdichotomously branched filaments with a basal septum and one pyrenoid per subspherical to lenticular chloroplast. The other shows a larger sporophytic thallus, sparsely subdichotomously branched filaments with a basal septum and one pyrenoid per spherical chloroplast. In a phylogenetic tree based on rbcL sequence, the two above-mentioned Korean algae nest in the same clades as Derbesia minima and D. indica, respectively. The genetic distance between the sequences within the clades was 0.5-0.8%, which is considered to be included in the intra-specific range for the genus. These two siphonous Korean algae are identified as D. minima and D. indica, respectively, based on the morphological and molecular analyses. These species are newly recorded in the Korean marine algal flora herein.

  • This paper is part of the research about the selection and justification of Jeju international airport as an aircraft category 'F' alternative airport, which is the results of an weather analysis based on meteorological statistics. As the results of the study, it has been only 1 day per year (58minutes) that weather conditions of Incheon and Jeju international airports, from January 2006 to June 2011, are below landing weather minimums of each airport at the same times. This means that these airports are not within the same meteorological region, which is against the current orthodoxy. In addition, it is very rare that weather conditions of Jeju international airports are below landing weather minimums when Incheon international airport is below landing weather minima. It shows that the meteorological characteristics of these regions differ widely and the designation of Jeju international airport as an alternative airport is scientifically reasonable.

  • The conformation dependences of basis set superposition errors (BSSE) for 1,2-difluoroethane (DFE) and 1,2-dimethoxyethane (DME) molecules have been estimated using counterpoise method at the Moller-Plesset second order perturbation (MP2) level of theory with various basis sets, assuming that all BSSE dependences on conformations are due to the change in CC bond. The BSSE on the energy differences between eclipsed and gauche forms of DFE are in the range of 0.2-1.2 kcal/mol and those between local minima, gauche and anti forms, are less than 0.2 kcal/mol. For the larger DME molecule, the BSSE differences between local minima are still less than 0.4 kcal/mol, but may not be ignored compared to the energy differences of 0.2-3.0 kcal/mol between conformers.

  • The range image is divided into surface regions which are homogeneous in their intrinsic properties. In this paper, we use cooperative relaxational algorithm between curvatures to escape local minima and choose optimal possibility to reserve edge. Cooperative relaxational algorithm between curvatures is relaxation process in which weights of center pixel;s and neighbor pixel's possiblility are determined adaptively by using deviation of curvatures. Experimental resutls show that the proposed method segments and classifies the range images more accurately compared to the other relational algorithms.

  • A range-frequency interference pattern is analyzed in the course of the propagation of ship noise in shallow water. It has been shown to exhibit striated bands of intensity maxima and minima in the spectrogram. The slope of the striations is an invariant of the modal interference and is described by a waveguide invariant parameter $\beta$. It turns out that this interference pattern is useful for identifying the physical properties of the waveguide such as seabed properties. In this article, the interference pattern is analyzed using image processing techniques to produce the distribution of the beta and the effects of sediment types and geoacoustic parameters on beta distribution are examined and characterized by moments of the distributions.

  • Effects of rotary oscillation on unsteady laminar flow past a circular cylinder have been investigated in this study. Numerical simulations are performed for the flow at Re=100 in the range of 0.2<$\Omega$<2.5 and 0.02<$St_f$<0.8, where $\Omega$ and $St_f$ are, respectively, the maximum rotation velocity and rotation frequency normalized by the free-stream velocity and cylinder diameter. Results show that rotary oscillation has significant effects on the flow. When the rotation frequency is near the natural vortex-shedding frequency, lock-on occurs and the lock-on frequency range becomes wider as the rotation velocity increases. In a certain range of the rotation frequency and velocity, modulations in the velocity, lift and drag signals occur and this modulation frequency is expressed as a linear combination of the rotation frequency and vortex-shedding frequency. The mean drag and amplitude of the lift fluctuations show local minima near the boundary between the lock-on non and lock-on regions.

  • Variabilities of tidal range at Inchon were described based on observed values. Relationships between tidal ranges and harmonic costants of tide were also examined. Fortnightly variation is predominant and its range is 571.3cm. Mean of maximum spring range(ΔH/sun max/) is 887.2cm and that of minimum neap range(ΔH/sun min/) is 315.9cm. Mean tidal range(ΔH) is 634.3cm. Diurnal inequality is shown about 141cm on an average and monthly inequality is also shown about 100cm. Yearly inquality appears with a range of about 35cm, maxima in March and September, and minima in June and December. There may exist 18 1 years periodicity with a range of about 45cm. There are some relationships between ridal ranges and amplitudes of M$\_$2/ and S$\_$2/, such as ΔH=2.172 H$\_$m/, ΔH$\_$max/=3.043 H$\_$m/, ΔH$\_$min/=1.071 H$\_$m/, ΔH$\_$max/=2.198 (H$\_$m/ + H$\_$s/), and ΔH$\_$min/=1.740 (H$\_$m/ - H$\_$s/).

  • In images degraded by bad weather, edges representing object boundaries become weak and faint. In this paper we present an image enhancement method, which increases image visibility by making edges as clear as possible. First, we choose edge candidate regions by finding local maxima and minima in an image intensity field, and then build a histogram using image intensities of pixels located at the two sides of candidate edges. Second, we decompose this histogram into multiple modes, which are determined by local minima in the histogram. Once modes are computed, we find modes connected by edges in the image intensity field and build link chains of connected modes. Finally we choose the longest link chain of modes and make the distances between every connected modes as large as possible. The darkest mode and the brightest mode should be within the image intensity range. This stretch makes edges clear and increases image visibility. Experiments show that the proposed method real-time enhances images degraded by bad weather as good as well known time-consuming methods.
