  • Driver's perceived curve radius is different from actual curve radius at curve sections. This is called visual distortion. It has effect on operation speed according to driver's perception and finally bad effect on safety at curve sections. At present, however, there is no research on quantitatively analysis of visual distortion and no criteria for curve section design considering the visual distortion. Therefore, this study focus on finding degree of visual distortion and suggesting design criteria by visual distortion analysis. The process of this study is as below; First, a calculaiton model of perceived curve radius was developed by survey using computer simulation. In this model, a dependent variable is perceived curve radius and an independent variable is geometric factors. Second, degree of visual distortion was calculated from ratio of perceived curve radius to actual curve radius. Finally, design criteria were suggested through influencing factor analysis of visual distortion at curve sections.

  • In accordance with the high precision of mechanical elements, it has been required to high precision in surface roughness measurement and, therefore, stylus tip radius is manufa- ctured less than 2 .mu. m through ion sputter machining. In this experiment, by suing ion sputter machined stylus pf fine tip, radius and lapping machined stylus, surface roughness of standard specimens, silicon wafer were measured and then Rmax, Ra, RMS value were investi- gatedaccording to the variation of tip radius of stylus. As a result, measuring error due to the variation of stylus tip radius in surface roughness measurement was decreased by using ion sputter machined stylus and also the measuring accuracy was improved. And the measuring variation of Ra, RMS calculated from correlation coefficient lager than 0.9 on the wave of short period and amplitude using ion sputter machined stylus of fine tip radius.

  • An electric fan for cooling high density electronic devices is limited and operated in very low efficiency. The corona discharge is utilized as the driving mechanism for an ionic gas pump, which allows for air flow control and generation with low noise and no moving parts. These ideal characteristics of ionic pump give rise to variety applications. However, all of these applications would benefit from maximizing the flow velocities and yields of the ionic pump. In this study, a needle-mesh type ionic pump has been investigated by focusing on the radius of curvature of corona needle points elevating the ionic wind velocity and efficiency. It is found that the radius of curvature of the corona discharge needle point influences significantly to produce the ionic wind and efficiency. As a result, an elevated ionic wind velocity and increased ionic wind generation yield can be obtained by optimized the radius of curvature of the corona needle electrode.

  • The effect of nose radius on aerodynamic heating is investigated by using the Navier-Stokes code extended to thermochemical nonequilibrium airflow, Spherical blunt bodies, whose nose radius varies from 0.O03048 m to 0.6096 m, flying at Mach 25 at an altitude of 53.34 km are considered. Comparison of heat flux at stagnation point with the solution of Viscous Shock Layer and Fay-Riddell are made. Results show that the flow for very small radius is in a nearly frozen state, and therefore the heat flux due to diffusion is smaller than that due to translational energy. As the radius becomes larger, the portion of heat flux by diffusion becomes greater than that of heat flux by translational temperature and approaches to a constant value.

  • A pin fin with variable fin base thickness is optimized based on the ratio of heat loss to the maximum heat loss using a two-dimensional analytic method. The temperature profile along the normalized radius position in the fin is presented. For fixed fin outer radius, the optimum heat loss, fin length and efficiency as a function of fin base thickness, outer radius, convection characteristic numbers ratio and ambient convection characteristic number are presented. One of the results shows that the effect of fin outer radius and ambient convection characteristic number on the optimum fin length is remarkable.

  • Present study examines detonation wave propagation characteristics in annular channel. A normalized value of channel width to the annular radius was considered as a geometric parameter. A parametric study was carried out for a various regimes of detonation waves from weakly unstable to highly unstable detonation waves. Numerical approaches that used in the previous study of numerical requirements of the simulation of detonation wave propagations in 2D and 3D channel were used also for the present study with OpenMP parallization for multi-core SMP machines. The major effect of the curved geometry on the detonation wave propagation seems to be a flow compression effect, regardless of the detonation regimes. The flow compression behind the detonation wave by the curved geometry of the circular channel pushes the detonation wave front and results in the overdriven detonation waves with increased detonation speed beyond the Chapmann-Jouguet speed. This effect gets stronger as the normalized radius smaller, as expected. The effect seems to be negligible beyond the normalized radius of 10.

  • This study presents free vibration analyses of perforates steel plates with various cutouts. Four different parameters (shape, size, curvature radius ratio, and rotation of cutouts) were considered to investigate the effects of those parameters on the free vibration characteristics, such as natural frequencies of the perforated steel plates. Three different shapes of cutouts are circle, square, and triangle, and the considered sizes are 5, 10, 15, 20, and 25 mm. For the triangular and square cutouts, the characteristic radii of the inscribed circles of those cutouts were defined. In addition, the curvature radius ratio was defined as the ratio of curvature radius of bluntness and the characteristic radius. Then, total seven different curvature radius ratios (0, 0.1, 0.3, 0.5, 0.7, 0.9, and 1) were considered. To investigate the rotation effect of the cutouts, it was considered four rotations ($0^{\circ}$, $15^{\circ}$, $30^{\circ}$, and $45^{\circ}$) for the square cutouts and three rotations (0, 15, and 30) for the triangular cutouts. All the free vibration analyses were conducted using a general purpose finite element program. From the analyses we found that the most influential parameter for the free vibration response of the perforated plates is the size of cutout. The other factors such as the shape, curvature radius ratio, and rotation are minors; they mainly change the natural frequency as long as the size effect is accompanied.

  • One of the main applications of FRP composites is confining concrete columns. Hence identifying the cyclic and monotonic stress-strain behavior of confined concrete columns and the parameters influencing this behavior is inevitable. Two significant parameters affecting the stress-strain behavior are aspect ratio and corner radius. The present study aims to scrutinize the effects of corner radius and aspect ratio on different aspects of stress-strain behavior of FRP confined concrete specimens (rectangular, square and circular). Hence 44 FRP confined concrete specimens were tested and the results of the tests were investigated. The findings indicated that for specimens with different aspect ratios, the relationship between the ultimate stress and the corner radius is linear and the variations of the ultimate stress versus the corner radius decreases as a result of an increase in aspect ratio. It was also observed that increase of the corner radius results in increase of the compressive strength and ultimate axial strain and increase of the aspect ratio causes an increase of the ultimate axial strain but a decrease of the compressive strength. Investigation of the ultimate condition showed that the FRP hoop rupture strain is smaller in comparison with the one obtained from the tensile coupon test and also the ultimate axial strain and confined concrete strength are smaller when a prism is under monotonic loading. Other important results of this study were, an increase in the axial strain during the early stage of unloading paths and increase of the confining effect of FRP jacket with the increase and decrease of the corner radius and aspect ratio respectively, a decrease in the slope of reloading branches with cycle repetitions and the independence of this trend from the variations of the aspect ratio and corner radius and also quadric relationship between the number of each cycle and the plastic strain of the same cycle as well as the independence of this relationship from the aspect ratio and corner radius.
