  • The objective of this paper is to examine the detection limit, growth characteristics and notch curvature radius in short crack problem. Measurement techniques such as ultrasonic method and back-face strain compliance method were adapted. The fatigue crack growth rate of the short crack is slower than that of a long crack for a notched specimen. The short crack is detected effectively by ultrasonic method. A short surface crack occurs in the middle of specimen thickness and is transient to a through crack when maximum crack depth is larger than the notch curvature radius.

  • The effect of OTS(octadecyltrichlorosilane) SAM(self-assembled monolayer) on the micro-adhesion has been studied. OTS SAM was formed on the Si(100) surface and SPM (scanning probe microscope) tips with different radius of curvature were fabricated by a series of masking and etching processes. Pull-off forces of different tips on Si and OTS SAM surfaces were measured by SPM in different relative humidities. The surface of OTS SAM was changed to hydrophobic surface and the micro-adhesion force of OTS SAM was lower than that of pure Si. As the tip radius of curvature and the relative humidity increased. the micro-adhesion force increased. Based on the test results. the main parameter affected to the micro-adhesion was absorbed humidity on the surface.

  • The objective of this paper is to examine the detection limit, growth characteristics and notch curvature radius in short crack problem. Measurement techniques such as ultrasonic method and back-face strain compliance method were adopted. The fatigue crack growth rate of the short crack is slower than that of a long crack for a notched specimen. The characteristic of crack growth and crack closure is same as the case of a delay of crack growth caused by constant amplitude load for an ideal crack or single peak overload for a fatigue crack. The short crack is detected effectively by ultrasonic method. A short surface crack occurs in the middle of specimen thickness and is transient to a through crack depth is larger than the notch curvature radius.

  • Cable-in-Conduit Conductors (CICC) have been used for fabrication of nuclear fusion magnets. Bending process is included in fabrication of superconducting magnet such as termination of conductors. Because of plastic deformation by bending process, there can be a large residual stress and change of shape in bent conductors. Void volume fraction in conductors is also changed by bending process. In this study, Commercial code was used to analyze the bending process at various bending curvature radius. The calculated residual stress of conductors bent at less than about 40cm curvature radius exceeded the allowable stress.

  • A computational investigation of blood flow in a coronary artery grafted by artificial bypass was performed to determine such geometric parameters as the curvature of radius, approach length, and angle of end-to-side anastomosis. Transient flow features in the host artery were computed using FVM and SIMPLE algorithms. We compared flow distributions and wall shear stresses in two simple models, planar and non-planar, and confirmed that the non-planar bypass model was more conducive to suppressing intimal hyperplasia. Our non-planar model with $60^{\circ}$ of anastomosis and a 1.0 diameter approach length and radius of curvature predicts a relatively small, spatially-extended high-OSI (>0.01) zone, as well as an increased average wall shear stress on this zone.

  • The flow characteristics varying with rate of the radius of curvature to width (Rc/B) in open channel bends are investigated with a simplified numerical model. Secondary flow velocity and transverise bed slope are formulated from the equations of momentum and force balance analysis, respectively. The conservation equations of mass and streamwise momentum are simplified by depth integration and its solution could be obtained from the explicit finite difference method. Three sets of computer simulation are executed. The rates of Rc/B adopted in simulations are 2.7, 5.4 and 8.1. The terms analyzed in this paper secondary flow velocity, streamwise velocity, the path of maximum steamwise velocity, deviation angle, and mass-shift velocity.

  • The goal of total disc replacement is to restore pain-free mobility to a diseased functional spinal unit, by replacing the degenerated disc with a mobile bearing prosthesis. SB Charite III is named commercial product as the Artificial Intervertebral Disc (AID). SB Charite III consists of sliding core and endplate made by Ultra-high Molecular Weight Polyethylene (UHMWPE) and cobalt chrome alloy, respectively. To evaluate the effect of von-Mises stress in AID, and three-dimensional finite element model of AID analysis was preformed for four different loading types of sliding core. Consequently, endplate was compared with a compressive preload at 400N and flexion moment at $3{\sim}9Nm4. Therefore, this research has obtained result that von-Mises stress of sliding core in AID disc by radius curvature.

  • Bending losses of bent optical waveguides are calculated by virtue of the finite difference-beam p propagation method in the cylindrical coordinate system. In order to minimize the radiating losses of bent optical waveguides, we apply the trench structure to the bent waveguides and perform the a analysis to keep track of: 1) the influence of curvature radius on the bending loss without the trench, 2) the influence of curvature radius and refractive index difference on the bending loss with the trench, 3) the influence of the trench width on the bending loss.

  • The curved portion fur each section running safety evaluation interpretation according to the track condition for improving the curved portion passage rate of a vehicle by using the multibody analysis model of the Saemaeul train was carried out. As a result, The excess of cant reaches the bad effect to the running safety in case the radius of curvature is small. In case the radius of curvature was large, we could confirm that the deficiency of cant reached the bad effect to the running safety. In the curved portion, the circular curve section most badly showed the running safety. The deficiency of curve length reaches the bad to the running safety. In the curved portion, the circular curve section most badly showed the running safety. Therefore the track condition(cant, transition curve length, etc) can reach the bad effect to the running safety of a vehicle, the exact design is required.

  • Buckling behavior was studied for the square plate with bead and hole under shear load. Plates were made to examine the effect of bead and hole to the material, aluminum and composite, the effect of flange angle, bead height and bead radius of curvature. There was little difference between buckling loads obtained by the experiment and Rayleigh-Ritz method to the plate. Buckling load could be increased highly when stress concentration to the hole was dispersed effectively using flange. A well-designed plate using bead and flange showed 3 times as much as stiffness to the plate without bead and flange.
