DEVELOPMENT OF ON-THE-FLY(OTF) OBSERVATION METHOD FOR SEOUL RADIO ASTRONOMY OBSERVATORY(SRAO) 6-METER TELESCOPE (서울전파천문대(SRAO) 6M 망원경의 ON-THE-FLY 관측 시스템 구축)

  • On-The-Fly (OTF) observation method is developed for the efficient use of 6 M radio telescope at Seoul Radio Astronomy Observatory (SRAO). This technique, in which data and information of antenna position are recorded synchronously while driving a telescope regularly and rapidly across a field, provides more efficient use of telescope time and better calibration of the acquired data than the traditional point-to-point observation method does. For the realization of the method, we (1) added RT-Linux modules to the existing operating system, (2) replaced digital voltmeter with voltage-to-frequency converter, and (3) modified many SRAO observation programs. By observing Moon and G78.2+2.7 using this method and comparing them with previous observations, we verify the successful operation and efficiency of the OTF observation mode.

  • This paper is the research and development including the system design and the prototype system building of the 400MHz wide-band digital autocorrelation spectrometer system for radio astronomy observation, which will be used as back-end signal processing unit of the Dual channel SIS receiver at Taeduk Radio Astronomy Observatory. So in this paper, we performed development of the high speed digitizing sampler, the circular memory buffer, and the correlator module for the 400MHz wide-band digital autocorrelator. This developed system will be use at TRAO after the housing and some calibration.

  • In this paper, we suggest a new referencing method for the array On-The-Fly(OTF) observations in radio astronomy. To reduce the baseline residual, we have proposed and evaluated a new referencing method which uses the source free regions in the observed frame as references. These new references have small ${\Delta}$t and ${\Delta}$x, the time and position differences between the source and the references, and the systematic problems w~re improved by using this new referencing method. The curved baseline residuals were straightened and the rms was reduced to 17 mK. This new referencing method is expected not only to make possible to take more stable data for the array OTF observation of external galaxies but also to save the observation and data reduction time.

  • In this paper, we describe the correlation processing method of multi-polarization observation data of the Daejeon Correlator. VLBI observations include single or multiple polarized observations depending on the type of object. Polarization observations are performed to observe the characteristics of the object. During the observations of the celestial object, polarization measurements are also performed to determine the delay values and causes of changes in the object. Correlation processing of polarization observation data of the Daejeon correlator is proposed by OCTAVIA of a synchronous reproduction processing apparatus that outputs data input to each antenna unit by using an output bit selection function to convert bits and the order of the data streams is changed, And the input of the Daejeon correlator is configured to perform the polarization correlation processing by conducting correlation processing by setting the existing stream number to be the same. Correlation processing is conducted on the test data observed for the polarization correlation processing and it is verified through experiments that the polarization correlation processing method of the proposed Daejeon correlator is effective.

  • This paper describes the digital back-end system for getting the data to analyze the user observation mode by digitalize the analog data after receiving the space radio using the radio telescope, The received analog data will be digitalized by high-speed sampler with 1 Gsps for 4 channel frequency band of millimeter wave, and the digital data will be transported through the fiber-optic digital transmission system and WDM(wavelength division multiplex) to observation building, The wideband digital FIR(Finite Impulse Response) filters analyze the data for user observation mode to record the data in high-speed recorder with 1 Gbps. In this paper, we introduce the overall system configuration and features combined by various information and communication technology in radio astronomy briefly, which will be adopted by KVN(Korean VLBI Network).

  • In this paper, we evaluate the basic test results of the 32 Gbps observational equipment introduced as the back-end system for the wideband VLBI (Very Long Baseline Interferometry) observation of KVN (Korean VLBI Network). Radio astronomers want to make a large radio telescope that has excellent performance in order to observe the superfine structure of a celestial body, but a lot of money is needed. Therefore, in order to increase the sensitivity, the performance improvement of the receiving system and the method of observing the wide frequency bandwidth are introduced. To do this, we adopted a wideband sampling method for converting analog signals to digital with ultra-fast speeds and a wideband sampler for performing digital filtering in order to observe a wide observational frequency bandwidth. The wideband sampler (OCTAD-K) supports up to 16 Gsps-2bits sampling and supports a variety of observational bandwidth using digital filtering techniques. In particular, it is designed to support KVN's 4-frequency simultaneous observation system and VERA(VLBI Exploration of Radio Astrometry)'s 2-beam observation system. It can also support polKVN(Korean VLBI Network), KaVA(KVN and VERA Array), 32Gbps Direct Sampler, Digital Filter, Widebandarization observations and supports the standard VDIF(VLBI Data Interchange Format) format of observed data. In this paper, the performance of the system and the problem solving are described in detail after performing the factory inspection and field test before the system is introduced.

  • Taeduk Radio Astronomy Observatory (TRAO) is about to jump with new system - 16 beams array receiver with low noise temperature, new observation system on VxWorks OS, and FX spectrometer for 32 input signals. We serve a quite obvious diagram to understand new TRAO observation system. This diagram will be quick guide for manager and observer.
