  • An experimental study for an optimum etching of commercialized cellulose nitrate SSNTD, CA 80-15 and LR 115-1 for detecting alpha particles, was carried out. Alt-hough ordinary etching condition of the detectors has been recommended by the producer, a remarkable discrepancy in etching tine was found. The detectors were irradiated with a $0.1{\mu}Ci\;^{241}Am$ alpha source under a known geometrical arrangement. Analysis on the track size as functions of etching time and etchant concentration and comparative examination of theoretically predicted number of tracks per unit area with that recorded on the detectors were made, including a study on the variation of detection efficiency with the effective energy of the incident alpha particles.

  • A long-range atmospheric dispersion model named LADAS has been developed to understand the characteristics of the transport and diffusion of radioactive materials released into atmosphere. The developed numerical model for validation was compared with the results of the ETEX which is the long-range field tracer experiment. As a comparative study, the calculated concentration distributions agreed well in the case of the usage of the mixing heights calculated by the Richardson number than the usage of the constant mixing heights in LADAS model. Also, the calculated concentrations agreed with the time series of the measured ones at some sampling points.

  • We investigated the effect of ionic component on crystalline morphology development during isothermal annealing in a sodium neutralized sulfonated poly(ethylene terephthalate) ionomer (Ion-PET) by time-resolved small-angle x-ray scattering (TR-SAX S) using synchrotron radiation. At early stage in Ion-PET, SAXS intensity at a low annealing temperature (Ta = 120 $^{\circ}C)$ decreased monotonously with scattering angle for a while. Then SAXS profile showed a peak and the peak position progressively moved to wider angles with isothermal annealing time. Finally, the peak intensity decreased, shifting the peak angle to wider angle. It is revealed that ionic aggregates (multiplets structure) of several nm, calculated by Debye-Bueche plot, are formed at early stage. They seem to accelerate the crystallization rate and make fine crystallites without spherulite formation (supported by optical microscopy observation). From decrease of peak intensity in SAXS,it is suggested that new lamellae are inserted between the preformed lamellae so that the concentration of ionic multiplets in amorphous region decreases to lower the electron density difference between lamellar crystal and amorphous region. In addition, analysis on the annealing at a high temperature (Ta = 210 $^{\circ}C)$ by optical microscopy, light scattering and transmission electron microscopy shows a formation of spherulite, no ionic aggregates, the retarded crystallization rate and a high level of lamellar orientation.

  • The addition of montmorillonite (MMT) in the UV curable polyurethane diacrylate based resins was investigated to fabricate nanocomposites with improved mechanical properties and water sorption behavior using different photoinitiator systems. As a result, it was observed that 1 wt% of clay loading fairly improved tensile resistance and water uptake behavior. It can be also confirmed that dual photoinitiator system consisted of benzyldimethyl ketal and bisacyl phosphine oxide exhibited enhanced energy absorption band 340~450 nm even with 3 wt% of MMT concentration, which may affect the curing behavior of nanocomposite especially in our UV lamp system.

  • To assess the internal dose by $^3H\;&\;^{14}C$ in total diet of inhabitants near Wolsung Nuclear Power Plants, TFWT, OBT and $^{14}C$ concentration in total diet was analyzed for collection region and time. TFWT, OBT and $^{14}C$ concentrations were in the range of 3.19-42.2 Bq/L, 1.00-39.4 Bq/L, and 0.230-0.855 Bq/gC, respectively. The calculated annual effective dose with TFWT, OBT and $^{14}C$ is $6.10{\times}10^{-5}mSv/y,\;3.71{\times}10^{-5}mSv/y\;and\;7.08{\times}10^{-3}mSv/y$, respectively. And then annual internal dose with total diet for inhabitants near Wolsung NPPs is about $7.18{\times}10^{-3}mSv/y$, which is about 0.72% of annual effective dose limit 1 mSv/y.

  • Background: The combined effect of the low energy electron (LEE) irradiation and $Cu^{2+}$ ion on DNA damage was investigated. Materials and Methods: Lyophilized pBR322 plasmid DNA films with various concentrations (1-15 mM) of $Cu^{2+}$ ion were independently irradiated by monochromatic LEEs with 5 eV. The types of DNA damage, single strand break (SSB) and double strand break (DSB), were separated and quantified by gel electrophoresis. Results and Discussion: Without electron irradiation, DNA damage was slightly increased with increasing Cu ion concentration via Fenton reaction. LEE-induced DNA damage, with no Cu ion, was only 6.6% via dissociative electron attachment (DEA) process. However, DNA damage was significantly increased through the combined effect of LEE-irradiation and Cu ion, except around 9 mM Cu ion. The possible pathways of DNA damage for each of these different cases were suggested. Conclusion: The combined effect of LEE-irradiation and Cu ion is likely to cause increasing dissociation after elevated transient negative ion state, resulting in the enhanced DNA damage. For the decrease of DNA damage at around 9-mM Cu ion, it is assumed to be related to the structural stabilization due to DNA inter- and intra-crosslinks via Cu ion.

  • Hydrocarbons induced by gamma-irradiation of green, black, and oolong teas were analyzed to determine whether the hydrocarbons can be used as markers for detecting post-irradiation of these teas. The samples were irradiated at 0, 2.5, 5, 7.5, and 10 kGy. Detection was attempted by extracting fat from the teas, separation of hydrocarbons with florisil column chromatography, and identification of hydrocarbons by gas chromatography-mass spectroscopy (GC-MS). Concentration of hydrocarbons increased with the irradiation dose. The major hydrocarbons in irradiated green, black, and oolong teas were 1-tetradecence (14:1), pentadecane (15:0), 1,7-hexadecadiene (16:2), 1-hexadecene (16:1), 8-heptadecene (17:1), and heptadecane (17:0). Radiation-induced hydrocarbons in teas were 1,7-hexadecadiene and 8-heptadecene. These compounds were not detected in non-irradiated samples, so the hydrocarbons (16:2, 17:1) can be used as markers for detecting post-irradiation of the teas. Furthermore, detection of hydrocarbons after 12 months storage at room temperature remains a suitable method for identifying irradiated teas.

  • The variation of MgO surfaces, in which fluorine was contained (F-MgO), by high energy electron-beam (EB) was studied using X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). Fluorine on the MgO surface was eliminated by EB treatment with the consequence that the electronic structures of Mg, O and C were varied. Moreover, as a result of oxidation of carbon species on the surface by high dose EB treatment (90 kGy), the concentration of carbonate and carboxyl species on the surface was increased. In this experiment, it was confirmed that the structure of oxidized metal surface can be adjusted by varying conditions of EB treatment (energy and dose). This result implies that EB can be applied for developing new catalysts.

  • The pollution of antibiotics is a major cause of spreading antibiotics resistant bacteria in the environment. Applications of ozonation, UV, and ${\gamma}-ray$ irradiations have been introduced to remove antibiotics in the effluents from wastewater treatment system. In this study, we compared the chemical (HPLC) and biological (antimicrobial susceptibility test, AMS) assays in measuring of the concentrations of residual antibiotics after ${\gamma}-ray$ and UV irradiation. Most samples were degraded by ${\gamma}-ray$ irradiation (1~2 kGy). However, lincomycin and tetracycline were not degraded by UV irradiation. The concentration of residual antibiotics, that was treated with ${\gamma}-ray$ and UV irradiation, measuring by bioassay was similar to HPLC. The concentrations of ${\gamma}-ray$ irradiated cephradine measured by AMS test were 2 times higher than that of HPLC assay, indicating AMS test is more sensitive than HPLC assay. These results indicate that ${\gamma}-ray$ irradiation technique is more useful than UV irradiation, and biological assay is more useful to detect the antibiotics and toxic intermediates in antibiotics degradation.
