  • This paper investigates the flow field and organism concentration in a UV disinfection channel in which vertical ultraviolet lamps are arranged in a staggered configuration. Turbulence is described by low Reynolds number ${\kappa}-{\varepsilon}$ turbulence model and standard ${\kappa}-{\varepsilon}$ turbulence model, respectively. P-1 method has been employed to solve the radiative transfer equation. The obtained incident radiation is used to compute the inactivation term in the species equation. The CFD results are in good agreement with the existing experimental data for the UV channel. For the flow field, the low-Reynolds number ${\kappa}-{\varepsilon}$ model is superior to the standard ${\kappa}-{\varepsilon}$ model. The approach velocity has a significant effect on the disinfection efficiency. The organism concentration at the outlet decreases fast to a low inlet velocity.

  • The transfer of excitation energy from solvent to solute in polystyrene films doped with 2-(2'-hydroxyphenyl)benzothiazole (HBT) which undergoes intramolecular proton transfer in excited electronic state has been studied by employing steady state and time-resolved fluorescence measurements. The degree of Forster overlap between donor and acceptor molecule in this system is estimated to be moderate. Energy transfer efficiency increases with solute concentration at low concentration range and levels off at high concentration. It is observed that the excimer form of polystyrene is largely involved in energy transfer process. Photostability of HBT in polystyrene to UV light is also investigated to get insight into the long wavelength absorption band of HBT which was observed upon electron radiation.

  • Some of synthetic chemicals can net as an endocrine disrupting substance in higher animals. Dioxins, DDT, PCBs and bisphenol A (BPA) are classified into endocrine disruptors and aye under a strict control in many countries. This research was designed to compare the clastogenic effects of BPA to those of ionizng radiation to establish the relaltive effectiveness of BPA by means of Tradescantia micronucleus assay. For the uptake of the BPA through the stems, groups of fresh cuttings of Tradescantia BNL 4430 weve placed in BPA solutions of 0 to 4 $\mu$M for 6 hours under continuous aeration. The other groups of the cuttings were irradiated with 0 to 0.5 Gy of gamma- rays. The frequencies of micronucleus showed a positive dose- response relationship in the range of 0 to 0.5 Gy, and a clear concentration-response relationship in the experimental range of BPA concentrations. By comparing the two experimental results, it is possible to estimate the BPA concentration and its equivalent radiation dose for a fixed value of MCN frequency. BPA of $ll.8\mu{M}$ can give rise to 53.3 MCN/100 tetrads, which is the same frequency induced by 25 cGy of gamma- rays. It is of biological importance that clinical symptoms start to develop after a whole body exposure to radiation higher than 25 cGy. The results indicate that the pollen mother cells are an excellent biological end- point for toxicity test of suspected endocrine disrupting chemicals such as bisphenol A, cotylphenol and nonylphenol.

  • The amounts of radioactive wastes to be disposed in the medical institute have been increased due to development of radiation diagnosis and therapy rapidly. They are produced mostly by the very short lived radioisotopes such as $^{18}F$ used in PET/CT, $^{99m}Tc$, $^{123}I$, $^{125}I$ and $^{201}Tl$, etc. IAEA proposed a criteria for the clearance level of waste which depends on the individual ($10{\mu}Sv/y$) and collective dose (1 man-Sv/y), and concentration of each nuclide (IAEA Safety Series No 111-P-1.1, 1992 and IAEA RS-G-1.7, 2004). Radioactive wastes of $^{18}F$, $^{99m}Tc$, $^{123}I$, $^{125}I$ and $^{201}TI$ in the several types of container like Marinelli beaker, vial and plastic, were collected to measure the concentration of the waste of each nuclide in accordance with IAEA criteria. The measurement method and procedure of determining specific activity of the wastes using gamma emitters like MCA, gamma counter and beta emitters were developed. For the efficiency calibration of the detectors, CRM (certified reference material) which has the same dimension and shape was provided by Korea Research Institute of Standards and Science (KRISS). Correction factor of the radioactivity decay was calculated based on the measurement results, and the consideration of mutual relation with theoretical equation. The result of this study will be proposed as ISO standard.

  • To predict the seasonal variation of dissolved oxygen (DO) in Hakata bay, Japan, possible 20 time-series of different hourly-solar-radiation intensities were generated based on stochastically changing solar radiation intensity, and a numerical simulation on dissolved oxygen (DO) was carried out for each time series by using the Sediment-Water Ecological Model (SWEM). The model, consisting of two sub-models with hydrodynamic and biological models, simulates the circulation process of nutrient between water column and sediment, such as nutrient regeneration from sediments as well as ecological structures on the growth of phytoplankton and zooplankton, The results of the model calibration followed the seasonal variation of observed water quality well, and generated cumulative-frequency-distribution (CFD) curves of daily solar radiation agreed well with observed ones, The simulation results indicated that the exchange of sea water would have a great influence on the DO concentration, and that the concentration could change more than 1 mg/L in a day. This prediction method seems to be an effective way to examine a solution to minimize fishery damage when DO is depleted.

  • Coals and coal ashes, raw materials and by-products, in coal-fired power plants contain naturally occurring radioactive materials (NORM). They may give rise to internal exposure to workers due to inhalation of airborne particulates containing radioactive materials. It is necessary to characterize radioactivity concentrations of the materials for assessment of radiation dose to the workers. The objective of the present study was to analyze radioactivity concentrations of coals and by-products at four coal-fired plants in Korea. High purity germanium detector was employed for analysis of uranium series, thorium series, and potassium 40 in the materials. Radioactivity concentrations of $^{226}Ra$, $^{228}Ra$, and $^{40}K$ were $2{\sim}53Bq\;kg^{-1}$, $3{\sim}64Bq\;kg^{-1}$, and $14{\sim}431Bq\;kg^{-1}$ respectively in coal samples. For coal ashes, the radioactivity concentrations were $77{\sim}133Bq\;kg^{-1}$, $77{\sim}105Bq\;kg^{-1}$, and $252{\sim}372Bq\;kg^{-1}$ in fly ash samples and $54{\sim}91Bq\;kg^{-1}$, $46{\sim}83Bq\;kg^{-1}$, and $205{\sim}462Bq\;kg^{-1}$ in bottom ash samples. For flue gas desulfurization (FGD) gypsum, the radioactivity concentrations were $3{\sim}5Bq\;kg^{-1}$, $2{\sim}3Bq\;kg^{-1}$, and $22{\sim}47Bq\;kg^{-1}$. Radioactivity was enhanced in coal ash compared with coal due to combustion of organic matters in the coal. Radioactivity enhancement factors for $^{226}Ra$, $^{228}Ra$, and $^{40}K$ were 2.1~11.3, 2.0~13.1, and 1.4~7.4 for fly ash and 2.0~9.2, 2.0~10.0, 1.9~7.7 for bottom ash. The database established in this study can be used as basic data for internal dose assessment of workers at coal-fired power plants. In addition, the findings can be used as a basic data for development of safety standard and guide of Natural Radiation Safety Management Act.

  • Meteorological parameters In the atmospheric boundary layer and the vertical and horizontal dispersion parameters were determined by analyzing the data obtained by the special upper-air observations of one clear day for each season from October 1991 to August 1992. The concentration of the aklospheric pollutants over Taegu was analyzed by using the application of the Gaussian diffusion model. In the diurnal variation of diffusion of atmospheric pollutants, vertical diffusion due to turbulence is active in daytime while horizontal diffusion due to wind is active in nighttime. The mean concentration of pollutants in the side of downwind is higher during the daytime than the nighttime. Thus, the height of the mixed-layer at the nighttime considered as the most important parameter of the mean concentration of pollutants. In the seasonal variation of diffusion of atmospheric pollutants, vertical diffusion due to strong solar radiation is active in summer case day, and horizontal diffusion due to strong wind is active in winter case day. In winter case day, the mean concentration of pollutants in the side of downwind is maximum in the daytime. However, in summer case day, that is maximum in the nighttime.

  • Diurnal variations of air quality due to the characteristic features of local weather phenomena over Kunsan, Taegu, and Pohang are analyzed using various synoptic wand fields and the characteristics of local weather during the period of 1990 to 1992. The air pollutants analyzed are sulfur dioxide($SO2_$), nitrogen dioxide($NO_2$), and oxidants ($0_3$). The synoptic wind fields estimated at over the 850 hPa geopotential height are divided in terms of four wand directions and two wand speed categories for each season. The synoptic weather conditions are also classified Into two categories depending on the 850 hPa cloud amounts. The present study shows that the $SO_2$ concentration over Kunsan, and Taegu was maximum at the two or three hours after sunrise and second primary was three or flour hours after sunset. On the other hand, Its concentration over Kunsan was malnmum at 1900 LST or 2000 LST The $O_3$ concentration over the three cities shows Its mapdmum In the afternoon when the solar radiation is strong. The $NO_2$ concentration over Kansan shows in reverse proportion to the $O_3$ concentration over the Kunsan.

  • The radon concentrations in soil air were measured before and after a rainfall. 226Ra concentration, porosity, moisture content and temperature in soil were measured at Kyungpook National University in Daegu. As the results of measurement and analysis, the arithmetic mean of measured 222Rn concentration increased from 12100 ± 500 Bq/㎥ to 16200 ± 600 Bq/㎥ after the rainfall. And the measured 226Ra concentration was 61.4 ± 5.7 Bq/kg and the measured porosity was 0.5 in soil. The estimated values of 226Ra concentration and porosity using diffusion model of 222Rn in soil were 60.3 Bq/kg and 0.509, respectively. The estimated values were similar to the measured values. 222Rn concentration in soil increased with depth and moisture content. The estimations were obtained through fitting based on the diffusion model of 222Rn using the measurement values. The measured depth profiles of 222Rn were similar to the calculated depth profiles of 222Rn in soil. We hope that the results of this study will be useful for environmental radiation analysis.
