Support Vector Machine을 이용한 선에코 특성 분석 및 탐지 방법 (Analysis and Detection Method for Line-shaped Echoes using Support Vector Machine)

  • SVM은 학습 데이터를 두 개의 집단으로 분리시키는 최적의 초평면을 찾는 이진 분류기로서 우수한 성능 때문에 다양한 분야에서 귀납 추론, 이진 분류, 예측 등을 목적으로 사용되는 알고리즘이다. 또한 대표적인 블랙박스 모델 중 하나이기 때문에 학습 후 생성되는 SVM의 해석에 대한 연구도 활발히 진행되고 있다. 본 논문에서는 SVM 알고리즘을 이용하여 기상 레이더의 데이터 내에 비교적 높은 빈도로 발생하여 기상 예보의 정확도를 감소시키는 비강수에코 중 하나인 선에코를 자동으로 탐지하는 방법에 대한 연구를 수행하였다. 학습 데이터로는 평균 반사도, 크기, 발생 형태, 중심 고도 등과 같은 특성을 활용하였는데, 이는 기상 레이더 데이터에 저장된 다양한 데이터 중 반사도 값을 선택한 후 클러스터링 기법을 통해 추출한 것이다. 이와 같이 학습된 SVM 분류기를 실제 사례를 바탕으로 하여 검증하였으며, Decision Tree 알고리즘을 적용하여 생성한 분류기의 해석을 수행하였다.

  • 본 논문은 상대방으로부터 탐지를 최소화시키는 스텔스 기술을 분석하고, 대부분의 레이더 반사 단면적 감소는 형상화로부터 기인되며, 특별한 부위에는 RAM을 이용하여 최소화 시키는 것을 확인하였다. 따라서 RF 스텔스를 위한 밀리미터파 대역의 레이더 반사 단면적을 최소화시키는 측면에서 94 GHz에서 전파흡수량 17 dB로 98 %를 흡수하는 RAM을 설계 및 제작하였다. 결과적으로 개발된 RAM을 플랫폼에 적용시 상대방으로부터 레이더 탐지거리를 62 % 축소시키는 효과를 얻을 수 있다.

Classification of Convective/Stratiform Radar Echoes over a Summer Monsoon Front, and Their Optimal Use with TRMM PR Data

  • Convective/stratiform radar echo classification schemes by Steiner et al. (1995) and Biggerstaff and Listemaa (2000) are examined on a monsoonal front during the summer monsoon-Changma period, which is organized as a cloud cluster with mesoscale convective complex. Target radar is S-band with wavelength of 10cm, spatial resolution of 1km, elevation angle interval of 0.5-1.0 degree, and minimum elevation angle of 0.19 degree at Jindo over the Korean Peninsula. For verification of rainfall amount retrieved from the echo classification, ground-based rain gauge observations (Automatic Weather Stations) are examined, converting the radar echo grid data to the station values using the inverse distance weighted method. Improvement from the echo classification is evaluated based on the correlation coefficient and the scattered diagram. Additionally, an optimal use method was designed to produce combined rainfalls from the radar echo and Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission Precipitation Radar (TRMM/PR) data. Optimal values for the radar rain and TRMM/PR rain are inversely weighted according to the error variance statistics for each single station. It is noted how the rainfall distribution during the summer monsoon frontal system is improved from the classification of convective/stratiform echo and the use of the optimal use technique.

Characteristics of mid-latitude field-aligned irregularities observed with VHF coherent scatter ionospheric radar over Korea

  • The 40.8-MHz VHF coherent scatter ionospheric radar, located in South Korea (Gyeryong, $36.18^{\circ}N$, $127.14^{\circ}E$), has been operating since December 2009 to investigate ionosphere E- and F-region field-aligned irregularities (FAIs) of mid-latitude. During the observation, we found E- and F-region FAIs appeared frequently: continuous echoes during the post-sunrise period and Quasi-Periodic (QP) echoes at nighttime for E region ; strong post-sunset and pre-sunrise FAIs for F region. The characteristics of E- and F-region FAIs are presented in terms of seasonal and local time variations of occurrence during December 2009 to August 2012. In addition, to investigate the correlation with geomagnetic activity to FAIs occurrence, we compared K-index variations to local time occurrence. It is worth to note our occurrence result since long term observation over several years in the mid-latitude has not yet been carried out.

  • 한반도의 강수패턴을 보면 강수일수는 감소하나 호우일수는 증가하고 있는 추세이다. 특히, 우리나라는 강수의 대부분이 하계에 집중되어 있고, 단시간에 강수의 변화가 심하기 때문에 기존의 수치예보를 보완해줄 수 있는 예보체계의 확립이 불가피한 실정이다. TREC(Tracking Radar Echoes by Correlation)기법은 폭풍에 대한 내부 움직임을 결정하기 위한 목적으로 Rinehart와 Garvey(1978)에 의해 처음 개발된 것으로 비교적 간단하게 레이더 에코를 이용하여 강수의 이동경로를 추적할 수 있다. 일정한 시간 간격으로 제공되는 레이더 반사도 자료에 대하여 설정된 두 window 사이의 상관계수의 최대치를 찾아냄으로써 강수의 움직임을 파악하였다. 개발된 기법은 레이더 에코로부터 강수의 안정된 이동방향과 이동속도를 제시하기 위하여 상관성 분석과 함께 일치성 분석 및 가중함수에 의한 이동 백터장 보정을 수행하였다. 또한 이동 백터의 외삽을 통하여 강우이동경로와 대상유역의 단시간 예측 면적 강우 산정 방법을 제시하였다. 결과는 개선된 단시간 강수예측 가능성을 보여주었다.

  • The potential use of ranging sensors for reducing the occurrence of accidents in real environment is explored by many companies and laboratories. Most of the sensors under investigation utilize the FMCW(Frequency Modulated Continuous Wave) waveforms. The automotive environment presents to the FMCW radar sensor a multitude of moving and fixed targets and the sensor must detect and track only the targets which may pose a threat of collision or passengers accident. The sensor must function accurately in the presence of background echoes generated by moving and fixed targets, ground reflections, atmospheric noises, including rains, fog, and, snow and noise generated within the receiver. False detection of the desired target in this environment may issue false alarms. That may be dangerous to the passenger and the vehicle. A high false alarm rate is totally unacceptable. The false alarm mechanism consists of noise peaks, crossing the threshold and the undesired response of the system to off lane targets which are not potentially hazardous to the radar equipped vehicle. This paper presents an improve technique safety performance for driver-less operation using FMCW radar sensors.

  • 멀티 캐리어 레이더는 수신 신호로부터 표적의 탐지 및 파라메타 추출을 수행하게 되므로, 신호처리에 앞서 재머 신호가 영향을 주는 채널을 배제시키거나, 재머가 억압된 신호를 이용해서 신호처리를 수행해야 한다. 본 연구에서는 멀티캐리어 레이더에서 재머 채널을 구분하고, 재머가 억제된 신호를 생성하는 방법을 제시한다. 재머 채널 구분을 위해서는 각 채널로부터 얻어진 공분산 행렬의 표적신호 및 재머 성분을 포함하는 고유벡터(eigenvector)의 각 스펙트럼(angular spectrum) 특성을 이용한다. 수학적 분석에 의해 재머 채널의 구분 기준 근거를 제시하며, 고유벡터 분석에 의해 재머가 억압된 신호를 생성할 수 있음을 보인다. DOA(Direction Of Arrival) 추정 시뮬레이션을 통해서 제시된 방법이 재머 채널 구분 및 재머가 억압된 신호를 효과적으로 생성할 수 있음을 보인다.

Gadanki radar observations of F-region irregularities during June solstice of solar minimum: First results and preliminary analysis

  • In this paper we present the first results of summer-time F region irregularities during low solar condition observed using the Gadanki MST radar. Echoes were observed on all 20 nights of radar observations and were mostly confined to the post-midnight hours. Echo morphology is very different from the equinoxial post-sunset plume-like features reported earlier from Gadanki. Echo SNRs are lower by 25 dB than their equinoxial post-sunset counterpart, and are quite comparable to the equinoxial irregularities in the post-midnight hours, which are essentially the decaying post-sunset irregularities. The Doppler velocities, which lie in the range of $\pm$ 100 m s-1, show upward/northward motion of the irregularities during the initial phase in contrast to the observed predominant downward/southward velocities associated with the decaying equinoxial post-midnight F region irregularities. Spectral widths of the summer echoes, which are well below 50 m s-1 and are very similar to those of the decaying equinoxial irregularities, represent the presence of weak plasma turbulence. Simultaneous observations made using a collocated ionosonde show no ionogram trace during 2200-0530 LT except for a few occasions. Weak frequency type spread F observed during midnight hours occurred without prior occurrence of range spread F. Concurrent ionosonde observations made from magnetic equatorial location Trivandrum also show very similar result and thus no height rise of the F layer during the midnight hours could be monitored. The preliminary analysis suggests that the post-midnight irregularities reported here are mostly freshly generated ones. The observations are discussed in the light of other observational results reported earlier and the current under standing on the post-midnight occurrence F region irregularities in summer.

펄스길이에 따른 이중편파변수의 민감도 분석 (Sensitivity Analysis of Polarimetric Observations by Two Different Pulse Lengths of Dual-Polarization Weather Radar)

  • The observational sensitivity of dual-polarization weather radar was quantitatively analyzed by using two different pulse widths. For this purpose, test radar scan strategy which consisted of consecutive radar scan using long (LP: $2{\mu}s$) and short (SP: $1{\mu}s$) pulses at the same elevation angle was employed. The test scan strategy was conducted at three operational S-band dual-polarization radars (KSN, JNI, and GSN) of Korea Meteorological Administration (KMA). First, the minimum detectable reflectivity (MDR) was analyzed as a function of range using large data set of reflectivity ($Z_H$) obtained from JNI and GSN radars. The MDR of LP was as much as 7~22 dB smaller than that of SP. The LP could measure $Z_H$ greater than 0 dBZ within the maximum observational range of 240 km. Secondly, polarimetric observations and the spatial extent of radar echo between two pulses were compared. The cross-polar correlation coefficient (${\rho}_{hv}$) from LP was greater than that from SP at weak reflectivity (0~20 dBZ). The ratio of $Z_H$ (> 0 dBZ) and ${\rho}_{hv}$(> 0.95) bin to total bin calculated from LP were greater than those from SP (maximum 7.1% and 13.2%). Thirdly, the frequency of $Z_H$ (FOR) during three precipitation events was analyzed. The FOR of LP was greater than that of SP, and the difference in FOR between them increased with increasing range. We conclude that the use of LP can enhance the sensitivity of polarimetric observations and is more suitable for detecting weak echoes.
