In aqueous tape casting of alumina slurry systems, the relationships between the suspension compositions and the defects of the dried tapes were discussed. The suspensions compositions were controlled with the ratios of the solids, water and organics binder contents. The effects of the thickness of dried tape and kinds of binder system were also examined. In the defect free region, the apparent viscosity showed nearly same value due to the count balancing effect of solid and organic binder content on the apparent viscosity. When water content was constant, increasing solid led to decrease of organic binder content. The defect free region was narrowed with increasing of casting thickness. When linear type acrylic emulsion binders system (D1000 and D 1035) were used, defect free zone formed the belt type in the triangle of solid, water and organic binder content according to the line of constant water contents. However the defect free region was not found in the cross-link type emulsion binder system (D 1050).
The Critical Heat Flux (CHF) of water with dispersed alumina nanoparticles was measured for the geometry and flow conditions relevant to the In-Vessel Retention (IVR) situation which can occur during core melting sequences in certain advanced Light Water Reactors (LWRs). CHF measurements were conducted in a flow boiling loop featuring a test section designed to be thermal-hydraulically similar to the vessel/insulation gap in the Westinghouse AP1000 plant. The effects of orientation angle, pressure, mass flux, fluid type, boiling time, surface material, and surface state were investigated. Results for water-based nanofluids with alumina nanoparticles (0.001% by volume) on stainless steel surface indicate an average 70% CHF enhancement with a range of 17% to 108% depending on the specific flow conditions expected for IVR. Experiments also indicate that only about thirty minutes of boiling time (which drives nanoparticle deposition) are needed to obtain substantial CHF enhancement with nanofluids.

The influence of MgO addition on the densification and microstructure of alumina (Al2O3) was studied. Compacted alumina specimens were manufactured using ball-milling and one-directional pressing followed by sintering at temperatures below 1700℃. Relative density, shrinkage, hardness, and microstructure were investigated using analytical tools such as FE-SEM, EDS, and XRD. When the MgO was added up to 5.0 wt% and sintered at 1500℃ and 1600℃, the relative density exhibited an average value of 97% or more at both temperatures. The maximum density of 99.2% was with the addition of 0.5 wt% MgO at 1500℃. Meanwhile, the specimens showed significantly lower density values when sintered at 1400℃ than at 1500℃ and 1600℃ owing to the relatively low sintering temperature. The hardness and shrinkage data also showed a similar trend in the change in density, implying that the addition of approximately 0.5 wt% MgO can promote the densification of Al2O3. Studying the microstructure confirmed the uniformity of the sintered alumina. These results can be used as basic compositional data for the development of MgO-containing alumina as high-dielectric insulators.
Dehydrogenation of methanol to produce formaldehyde was carried out over various silica-alumina catalysts doped with alkali metals in a continuous flow system. The reaction was rather dependent on Lewis acid than Br${\ddot{o}}$nsted acid suggesting that dehydrogenation of methanol was an electronic reaction. The Br${\ddot{o}}$nsted acid sites on silica-alumina were neutralized by doping with alkali metals, and the neutralization effect of Br${\ddot{o}}$nsted acid was dependent on the electron-donating capacity of the dopant metals. Activation energy for dehydrogenation of methanol decreased when Br${\ddot{o}}$nsted acid was neutralized by doping with K.

The sodium-sulfur batteries which operate at $350^{\circ}C$ have been mainly used in the field of energy storage system. This batteries consist of liquid sodium anode, sulfur cathode and ${\beta}^{{\prime}{\prime}}$-alumina solid electrolyte. The conditioning process for stabilization of the batteries is essential since the cells show considerable fluctuation of discharge voltage at the beginning of discharge/charge cycles. It is found that one of the reasons of the fluctuation is the gradual change of contact area between molten sodium and solid electrolyte.

Translucent alumina is a potential candidate for high temperature application as a replacement of the glass or polymer. Recently, due to the increasing demand of high power light emitting diode (LED), there is a growing interest in the translucent alumina. Since the translucent property is very sensitive to the internal defect, such as voids inside or abnormal grain growth of sintered alumina, it is important to fabricate the defect-free product through the fabrication process. Powder injection molding (PIM) has been commonly applied for the fabrication of complex shaped products. Among the many parameters of PIM, the flowability of powder/binder mixture becomes more significant especially for the shape of the cavity with thin thickness. Two different positions of the gate were applied during PIM using the disc type of die. The binder was removed by solvent extraction method and the brown compact was sintered at $1750^{\circ}C$ for 3 hours in a vacuum. The flowability was also simulated using moldflow (MPI 6.0) with two different types of gate. The effect of the flowability of powder/binder mixture on the microstructure of the sintered specimen was studied with the analysis of the simulation result.
Effect of humic acid (HA) with periodic nitrogen back-flushing was investigated in hybrid process of alumina microfiltration and photocatalyst for drinking water treatment. It was compared and investigated with the previous results of microfiltration water back-flushing or ultrafiltration nitrogen back-flushing in viewpoints of membrane fouling resistance ($R_f$), permeate flux (J), and total permeate volume ($V_T$). As results, the trends of membrane fouling were different depending on nitrogen or water back-flushing, and depending on ultrafiltration or microfiltration made with the same material. Also, the nitrogen back-flushing using microfiltration was more effective membrane fouling inhibition than ultrafiltration, and the nitrogen back-flushing was more effective than water back-flushing using the same microfiltration membrane. Turbidity treatment efficiencies were almost constant independent of HA concentration, but HA treatment efficiency was the maximum at HA 10 mg/L. From this results, it was shown that the treated water HA quality increased as increasing HA concentration, but HA could be removed the most effectively by photocatalyst beads adsorption and photo-oxidation at HA 10 mg/L.
Thermal protection systems (TPS) are a group of materials that are indispensable for protecting spacecraft from the aerodynamic heating occurring during entry into an atmosphere. Among candidate materials for TPS, ceramic insulation materials are usually considered for reusable TPS. In this study, ceramic insulation materials, such as alumina enhanced thermal barrier (AETB), are fabricated via typical ceramic processing from ceramic fiber and additives. Mixtures of silica and alumina fibers are used as raw materials, with the addition of B4C to bind fibers together. Reaction-cured glass is also added on top of AETB to induce water-proof functionality or high emissivity. Some issues, such as the elimination of clumps in the AETB, and processing difficulties in the production of reusable surface insulation are reported as well.

The synthesis of Fischer-Tropsch oil is the catalytic hydrogenation of CO to give a range of products, which can be used for the production of high-quality diesel fuel, gasoline and linear chemicals. Our cobalt catalyst was prepared Co/alumina, Co/silica and Co/titania by the incipient wetness impregnation of the nitrates of cobalt with supports. Co-based catalysts was calcined at $400^{\circ}C$ before being loaded into the FT reactors. After the reduction of catalyst has carried out under $450^{\circ}C$, FT reaction of the catalyst has carried out at GHSV of 4,000 under $200^{\circ}C$ and 20atm. From test results, the order of increasing activity for the catalyst was Co/alumina > Co/silica > Co/titania. When the content of Co metal such as 5, 12, 20 and 30wt% was changed, an CO conversion increased as the content of Co metal increased. The activity of catalyst has obtained the best value at 12wt% Co content.
Statement of problem: Use of all-ceramic prostheses fabricated with CAD/CAM systems is increasing in the dentistry. Marginal fidelity in production of all-ceramic restoration has important clinical implications and is a key consideration issue in CAD/CAM production as well. Purpose: The objective of this study was to analyse marginal fidelities of $Procera^{(R)}$ Allceram Crown. Material and methods: On 56 patients treated with $Procera^{(R)}$ system Allceram Crown at Dankook Dental Hospital, marginal discrepancies of 101 abutments were measured by stereomicroscope at coping and final restoration stages. Paired t-test and one-way analysis of variance on marginal discrepancy data were conducted to determine the presence of significant differences between measurement and measuring point stages. Results: Marginal discrepancies of final restoration ($45.82{\pm}30.84\;{\mu}m$) were lower than alumina coping ($53.84{\pm}38.83\;{\mu}m$). Furthermore, the differences were found to be statistically significant at 95% confidence level. Anterior marginal discrepancies were lower than posterior marginal discrepancies, but they were not statistically significant. Lingual marginal discrepancies were higher than other measurement sites, and the differences were found to be statistically significant at 95% confidence level. Conclusion: Within the conditions of this study, marginal fidelities of $Procera^{(R)}$ Allceram Crown were acceptable, and after porcelain build-up, marginal fitness improved over alumina coping. More careful scanning is needed for better results.
