  • The purpose of this study was to invent a quotient equation which could quantitatively evaluate individual's hypothesis evaluating ability. The equation was induced by the analysis of the classification types about hypothesis evaluation knowledges generated by 15 pre-service elementary school teachers and the construction of the quotient equation on hypothesis evaluating ability. The hypothesis evaluation task administered to subjects was dealt with the woodpecker behavior. The task was initiated by generating hypothesis on the following question: 'Why don't woodpecker have brain damage after pecking wood?' Subjects then were asked to design and perform experiments for testing hypothesis. Finally they were asked to evaluate their own hypothesis based on the collected, analyzed and interpreted data. The knowledges generated from their evaluating hypothesis were analyzed by 4 major categories (richness, type, level and accuracy). Then, a general equation which could quantitatively and systematically evaluate individual's hypothesis evaluating ability was invented by an inductive process. After combining all the categories the following quotient equation was proposed; '$VQ\;=\;{\sum}(TE_n\;{\times}\;AE_n)\;{\times}\;LE$'. According to this results, woodpecker task and hypothesis evaluating ability quotient equation (VQ) which invented in this study could be applied to a practical use of measuring students' ability of scientific hypothesis evaluation.

  • Cancer patients have been suffered from the instability of mind/body and unbalanced homeostasis because of cancer progression and medical treatment such as chemotherapy, It is very important that appropriated actions can be promptly taken by monitoring cancer patients' mental conditions. For this reason, it is crucial to develop a monitoring method which is convenient and not harmful to their body. Brain-computer-interface(BCI) system is introduced for the purpose in this paper. Prefrontal brain waves of cancer patients and control groups have been measured by a portable neurofeedback(NF) system based on self-regulation of the human electroencephalogram(EEG). The NF system consists of the portable EEG amplifier and a headband with dry electrodes placed on Fp1 and Fp2 sites. Patterns of the prefrontal brain waves taken by computer are correlated to brain quotients by EEG-analysis program. Basic rhythm quotient, attention quotient, emotional quotient, anti-stress quotient and correlation quotient of control group have shown high significant level compared with the cancer patients group. On the other hand, the EEG patterns analysis is shown its possibility to be an important methodology of monitoring cancer patients' condition.

  • A factored form is a sum of products of sums of products, ..., of arbitrary depth. Factoring is the process of deriving a parenthesized form with the smallest number of literals from a two-level form of a logic expression. The factored form is not unique and described as either algebraic or Boolean. A Boolean factored form contains fewer number of literals than an algebraic factored form. In this paper, we present a new method for a Boolean factorization. The key idea is to identify two-cube Boolean subexpressions from given two-level logic expression and to extract divisor/quotient pairs. Then, we derive extended divisor/quotient pairs, where their quotients are not cube-free, from the generated divisor/quotients pairs. We generate quotient/quotient pairs from divisor/quotient pairs and extended divisor/quotient pairs. Using the pairs, we make a matrix to generate Boolean factored form based on a technique of rectangle covering.

  • Electroglottography (EGG) is a simple and non-invasive technique for analyzing the vibratory patterns of the vocal folds by detecting impedance changes across the larynx. An abnormal electroglottogram is shown in patients who have a dysphagia associated with neuromuscular disorder. Electroglottography offers reliable informations for diagnosis of swallowing disorder and gives quantitative datas. The purpose of this study is to provide the normal value of electroglottography in normal adults. We took electroglottograms of 80 adults who have no problem in swallowing and utterance. EGG data were analyzed to find out the value of Pitch, Jitter and Closed quotient with a commercially available software. There were significant differences between a usual voice and loud voice in 3 measures on the EGG signalmean pitch, Avg. jitter, mean quotient. To get a proper electroglottography, phonation of a usual voice was better than a loud voice. Four measurements- S.D pitch, Avg. Jitter, Mean closed quotient, S.D closed quotient- were independent of sex for adult. Three measurements- Mean pitch, S.D pitch, Mean closed quotient - were independent of age for adult aged twenties to fifties. The Avg. Jitter of twenties appeared to be lower than those of forties and fifties. The S.D closed quotient of twenties appeared to be lower than those of thirties, forties and fifties.

  • This paper described a design and implementation of the division/square-root for a redundant floating point binary number using high-speed quotient selector. This division/square-root used the method of a redundant binary addition with 25MHz clock speed. The addition of two numbers can be performed in a constant time independent of the word length since carry propagation can be eliminated. We have developed a 16-bit VLSI circuit for division and square-root operations used extensively in each iterative step. It performed the division and square-toot by a redundant binary addition to the shifted binary number every 16 cycles. Also the circuit uses the nonrestoring method to obtain a quotient. The quotient selection logic used a leading three digits of partial remainders in order to be implemented in a simple circuit. As a result, the performance of the proposed scheme is further enhanced in the speed of operation process by applying new quotient selection addition logic which can be parallelly process the quotient decision field. It showed the speed-up of 13% faster than previously presented schemes used the same algorithms.

  • This study analyzed in what ways the instructional materials have been dealing with the fraction as quotient, since the seventh national mathematics curriculum. An analysis of this study urged us to re-consider the content related to the fraction as quotient. First, the fraction as quotient has weakened in the current mathematics textbooks and workbooks in comparison to those developed under the previous curriculum. Second, the contexts of whole number division taught in grades 3 and 4 were not naturally connected to those of the fraction as quotient taught in grade 5. Third, the types of word problems, visual models, and partitioning strategies in the textbooks and the workbooks were partial, and the process of formalization was limited. Building on these results, this study is expected to suggest specific implications which may be taken into account in developing new instructional materials in process.

  • Purpose: This study was performed to identify the effects of oriental herbal tea on the brain function elders at the day care center and the nursing home. Methods: This study used a pre-post quasi-experimental design with a non-equivalent control group. Total 38 of elderly population (20 of experimental group and 18 of control group) was recruited. 100 mL of a type of oriental herbal tea developed for purpose of this study was given to each subject 3 times a day for 30 days (from May to Jun 2013). The brain function quotient was used to measure brain function. The data were analyzed by SPSS/WIN 18.0. Results: After drinking the oriental herbal tea, more significant improvement on attention quotient (AQ), anti-stress quotient (ASQ), emotion quotient (EQ) and brain quotient (BQ) were found in the experimental group than control group. Conclusion: This study shows that oriental herbal tea can be a health promotion option in elders. Therefore the tea can be utilized as an effective intervention for the health of elders in health facilities.
