Cell proliferation and c-Jun expression pattern in liver exposed by nongenotoxic carcinogens phenobarbital (PB) and clofibrate, and genotoxic carcinogen 2-amino-3-methylimidazo [4,5-f] quinoline (IQ) were investigated to see whether differential effects of genotoxic and non-genotoxic carcinogens on the development of neoplastic foci may be related to differential effect on cell proliferation. Male F344 rats were initially given a single intraperitioneal injection of diethylnitrosamine (200 mg/kg body weight), and 2 weeks later, animals were fed diets containing 0.03% IQ or 0.5% CE or 0.05% PB or basal diet as a control for 6 weeks. All rats were subjected to the two-thirds partial hepatectomy (PH) at week 3. Sequential sacrifice of rats was performed until 8 weeks. Cell proliferation was examined by immunohistochemical staining of bromodeoxyuridine and c-Jun expression was determined by northern blotting. The increase of cell proliferation rate after PH was significant in the rats fed 0.05% IQ and continued until 8 weeks, while the increase was not significant in the rats fed phenobarbital and clofibrate compared to that in the rats fed control diet. mRNA level of c-Jun in the liver treated with IQ was about 7 fold higher than that of control and peak at 5 hours after rH. In the liver treated with CE, mRNA level of c-Jun was 3-4 fold higher than that of control and the highest level of mRNA of c-Jun was seen at 24 hours after PH. These results show that differential effects of genotoxic and non-genotoxic carcinogens on the development of neoplastic foci may be related to differential effect on cell proliferation pattern.

We examined the pressure effects on petroleum pitch synthesis by using open and closed reaction systems. The pressure effects that occur during the pitch synthesis were investigated in three pressure systems: a closed system of high pressure and two open systems under either an atmosphere or vacuum. A thermal reaction in the closed system led to the high product yield of a pitch by suppressing the release of light components in pyrolysis fuel oil. Atmospheric treatment mainly enhanced the polymerization degree of the pitch via condensation and a polymerization reaction. Vacuum treatment results in a softening point increase due to the removal of components with low molecular weights. To utilize such characteristic effects of system pressure during pitch preparations, we proposed a method for synthesizing cost-competitive pitch precursors for carbon materials. The first step is to increase product yield by using a closed system; the second step is to increase the degree of polymerization toward the desired molecular distribution, followed by the use of vacuum treatment to adjust softening points. Thus, we obtained an experimental quinoline insolubles-free pitch of product yield over 45% with softening points of approximately $130^{\circ}C$. The proposed method shows the possibility to prepare cost-competitive pitch precursors for carbon materials by enhancing product yield and other properties.
In this study, a pitch for melt-electrospinning was prepared from naphtha cracking bottom (NCB) oil by the modification with heat treatment. The softening point and property of the modified pitch was influenced by modification conditions such as nitrogen flow rate, heat treatment temperature, and reaction time. Among these, the heat treatment temperature had a very strong influence on the distribution of molecular weight and softening point of the pitch. The C/H mole ratio and average molecular weight increased with increasing the heat treatment temperature due the decomposition and cyclization reaction of surface-functional groups. In addition, the values of benzene insoluble and quinoline insoluble also tends to decrease, and the width of molecular weight distribution seems to get more narrow. The carbon fiber with a diameter of $4.8{\mu}m$ was prepared from a modified pitch at the softening point of $155^{\circ}C$ by melt-electrospinning. It is believed that the melt-electro spinning method is much more convenient to get the thinner fiber than the conventional melt spinning method.
The selective absorption of metal ions by chelating agent-loaded resins was studied in aqueous media. The resins were prepared by loading the conventional anion exchange resin, Dowex 1-X8 (50 to 100 mesh) with chelating agents containing sulfonic group, such as 8-hydroxy-quinoline-5-sulfonic acid (HQS) and 7-nitroso-8-hydroxyquinoline-5-sulfonic acid (NHQS). The stability of the resin was markedly influenced by the following factors; (1) the affinity and concentration of anions in the external solution, (2) the pH of the media. The optimum conditions for the absorption of metal ions were determined with respect to the pH, shaking time, and the effect of anion concentration in the medium. Under the optimum condition the order of the absorption of metal ions such as Fe(Ⅲ), Cu(Ⅱ), Pb(Ⅱ), and Zn(Ⅱ) was in accord with that of the stability constants of the chelates. The total capacities of the resins were found in the range of 0.6∼1.6 mmole metal per gram.

Oganic electroluminescent devices (OELD) with multilayer structures have been studied actively for the application to a flat-panel display. Netal-chelate complexes hrboxylate. These complexes were characterized by FT-IR, MS/FAB, $^1$H-NMR, UV-vis and photoluminescence (PL). More importantly, the electrochemical gap (Eg), electron affinity(EA) and ionization potential (IP) of these complex films were investigated. Data from cyclic voltammetry(CV) were compared with the bandgap obtained from UV-vis and discussed. Further studies on the EL of these new materials are now in progress.
Alzheimer's disease (AD) is characterized pathologically by the presence of intracellular neurofibrillary tangles and deposition of ${\beta}$-amyloid ($A{\beta}$) peptides, which are generated by processing of amyloid precursor protein (APP). It is urgent to develop effective therapies for the treatment of AD, since our society rapidly accelerate aging. $A{\beta}$ peptides have been believed to be neurotoxic and now are also considered to have effects on the mechanism of memory formation. Recently, we investigated that a quinoline compound from natural product reduced the secretion of $A{\beta}$ from the neuroblastoma N2a cells (NL/N cell line) overexpressing APPswe. In this study, 3-phenyl-1-isoquinolinamine, a synthetic isoquinoline compound was analyzed to determine its effects on the metabolism of APP. It inhibited the secretion of $A{\beta}$ peptides from the N2a NL/N cell line. Beta-site APP cleaving enzyme (BACE) fluorescence resonance energy transfer (FRET) assay revealed that it inhibited BACE activity in a dose dependent manner. Immunoblotting study showed that it inhibited APP stabilization and expression and it slightly increased the stablization and the expression of ${\gamma}$-secreatase component from the N2a NL/N cell line. We suggest that 3-phenyl-1-isoquinolinamine inhibits APP metabolism and $A{\beta}$ generation by the means of BACE inhibitory mechanism. This is the first report that 3-phenyl-1-isoquinolinamine inhibits the secretion of $A{\beta}$ peptides from neuroblastoma cells.

The effects of a newly synthesized $H^+/K^+$ ATPase inhibitor,1-(2-methyl-4-methoxypheny)-4-[(3-hy-droxypropyl)amino] -6-methyl-2,3-dihydropyrrolo (3,2-c) quinoline (DBM-819) , on the central nervous system, isolated smooth muscle, cardiovascular and digestive systems and renal function were investigated in various experimental animals. Oral administration of DBM-819 had no effect on the central nervous system except body temperature of mice slightly decreased at doses of 15 and 50 mg/kg. DBM-819 produced a moderate analgesic effect in acetic acid-induced writhing test in mice at 50 mg/kg (p.o.). In conscious rats, DBM-819 (15 and 50 mg/kg, p.o.) showed a slight increase in blood pressure and a small decrease in heart rate. DBM-819 had an significant effect on agonist-induced contraction of guinea pig ileum at $1.5{\times}10^{-5}g/ml.$ No significant effect of DBM-819 (5 and 15 mg/kg, i.p) on urinary volume or urinary excretion of $Na^+,\;K^+$ and Cl- was observed in rats. DBM-819 had no significant effect on intestinal transport of a semisolid meal in mice at 15 and 50 mg/kg (p.o.). These findings suggest that DBM-819 exerts no significant pharmacological effects on the central nervous system and renal function at 15 mg/kg (p.o.), but produces some effects on the smooth muscle and circulatory system.
Seventeen different herbicides were screened to select promising ones for the control of weeds, which may be used in paddy fields transplanted with 8 days old young rice seedlings. Four classes of herbicides were chosen and tested with seedlings grown under different cultivating conditions. Contact herbicides such as diphenyl-ether and oxadiazol showed severe growth retardation of rice seedlings. Carbamate class(dimepiperate), quinoline class (quinclorac), pyrazol class(pyrazolate), acid amide class(mefenacet and pretilachlor), addition of safener (pretilachlor+fenclorim and mefenacet+bensulfuron+dymuron) and unknown class (KC-7079) exhibited normal growth of seedlings. Sulfonyl urea herbicide class(cimosulfuron, bensulfuron, pyrazosulfuron), and oxarane class(tridiphane) showed the slight growth inhibition but recovered shortly.

This study was conducted to evaluate the effect of additives (antioxidants for free radicals reduction) in cigarette filter treated with various antioxidants (three types of proanthocyanidins and ascorbic acid) and various concentrations of ascorbic acid and loaded with activated carbon on the delivery of free radicals of mainstream smoke (MS) by ESR. Also, we analyzed Hoffmann's analytes andscavenger activity according to the storage time and in vitro cytotoxicity. The analysis of spin number of vapor and particulate phase free radicals in MS are decreased to $14{\sim}24\;%$ and $16{\sim}40\;%$, respectively. As aresult of antioxidant potential for inactivity of vapor and particulate phase free radicals, natural antioxidants were more effective than ascorbic acid. Based on the result of the analysis of Hoffmann's analytes for various antioxidantstreated cigarette filters during the smoking, cigarette filter treated with ascorbic acid showed the lower amount of the deliveries of hydroquinone, isoprene and quinoline in MS than those treated with the other antioxidants. In the significant t-test on the difference of the cytotoxicity among the various antioxidants treated-cigarette filters, there are no significant differences at the 95 % confidence level. Those results indicated that the antioxidants were useful for reducing free radicals in MS because of the fast reaction between antioxidant and free radicals.

This study was conducted to determine the physiological responses of corn plants to chlorsulfuron, CHL, (2-chloro-N-(((4-methoxy-6-methyl-1,3,5- triazin-2-yl)amino)carboxyl) benzenesulfonamide) and/or imazaquin, IMA, (2-(4,5-dihydro-4-methyl-4-(1-methyl)-5-oxo-1H-imidazol-2y1)-3-quinoline carboxylic acid). CHL inhibited the plant growth within 6h after treatment, whereas IMA inhibited the growth more slowly(i.e., 36h). CHL inhibited the cell division of the root tips rapidly, however, little effect was found with IMA treatment. Neither CHL nor IMA had effect on the cell elongation of the shoots. CHL inhibited acetolactate synthase(ALS) activity of the roots within 1h after treatment. Interaction between CHL and IMA in growth inhibition was found to be additive or synergistic with simultaneous or sequential treatment of the two herbicides, respectively. In addition, interaction between CHL and IMA in ALS inhibition was found to be additive when the two herbicides were treated simultaneously.
