  • The performance of modern mainframe computers keeps increasing due to the advances in the semiconductor technology. However, the quest for the faster computer has never been satisfied. To overcome the discrepancy in the supply and demand, we studied a high performance computer architecture utilizing a three-dimensional Holographic Data Storage Systems (HDSS) as a secondary storage system. The HDSS can achieve a high storage density by utilizing the third dimension. Furthermore, the HDSS can exploit the parallelism by processing the two-dimensional data in a single step. To compare the performance of the HDSS with the conventional hard disk based storage system, we modeled the HDSS using the DiskSim simulation engine and performed the simulation study. Results showed that the HDSS can improve the access time by 1.7 times.

  • The convergence of significantly different and disparate technologies such as spintronics, carbon nano tube field effect transistors, photon and bio-responsive molecular switches, memristor and memristive systems and metamaterials, coupled with energy scavenging sources are gaining a renewed focus in the quest for new products. This paper will provide an insight into an anticipated technological revolution and will highlight a futuristic Roadmap to capture opportunities that are brought about as the results of formulation of new circuit components basically driven by emergence of nanoscale materials as part of System on System integration. Challenges as the result of new lumped components such as memristor, metamaterial-based lumped components and the like that will challenge the designers' comfort zone will also be discussed.

  • Acceptance of the international standards for video compression, such as H.261, MPEG-1 and MPEG-2, along with the developments in video codec hardware, has created an explosion of application. Among these, the long time quest for long-distance digital video transmission causes an increasing interest in transporting compressed video over networks which are nontraditional for this purpose, including asynchronous transfer mode networks, the Internet, and cellular and wireless channels. Transmission of compression video over packet network is improved for error resilience. And layered video coding techniques improves error resilience. We present a efficient method of scalable video coding for low bandwidth.

  • Purpose: Humor is an important part of life. Humor has many benefits as an intervention for hospitalized children. Humor is one strategy that pediatric nurses can use to help children cope with illness and hospitalizations. The purposes of the study were to 1) review the definition of humor, 2) identify methods and skills in using humor as an intervention, 3) identify the effects of humor as an intervention, and 4) suggest further research. Method: The design was a descriptive study with literature review. Previous studies were identified by searches of MEDLINE, CHNIAL, PUBMED and ProQuest. Results: Humor has positive physiological, psychological, social and communicative effects on patients and humor has a positive effect on the immune system. Conclusion: The main point identified from this study suggests that humor as a nursing intervention be developed for nurses to use with children who are hospitalized. Further research is needed to develop programs for humor as an intervention for health promotion and disease prevention in children.

  • The overall aim of this research was to explore Open-world game through the notion of Paidia and Ludus that proposed by Frasca. As a structured simulation system, the Open World overlap Non-linear events and Linear quests via geographic world. Building own sequence of explore the world with Paidia process, Player collides with the pre-scripted quest. In result of that Meta-Simulator emerge as alternative tool for modeling Meta-Simulation, which presents an alternative, extended use of gameplay.

  • Polarized mid-infrared emission from polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) can provide a crucial test of basic physics of alignment of nanoparticles and opens a potential new window into studying magnetic fields. In this talk, I will present a new model of polarized PAH emission that takes into account the effect of PAH alignment with the magnetic field due to resonance paramagnetic relaxation. I will then present our predictions for the polarization level of the strong PAH emission features from the interstellar medium. I will present the first detection of polarization of PAH emission at 11.3micron which is consistent with our theoretical prediction. Finally, I will discuss important implications of this work for tracing magnetic fields via mid-IR PAH features and for constraining the polarization of anomalous microwave emission that is useful for the quest of CMB B-modes.

  • This paper discuss basic functional construction and plant layout of a ELV dismantling system that can maximize the reusability of tarts and the recoverability of materials by dismantling ELV rationally and efficiently. "Island" type was selected for the system configuration considering processing amount, economical efficiency, and effectiveness. The system is supported by the information system, and composed of dismantling stations and handling equipments. The layout of the stations was determined after simulation and optimization using commercial software package, Arena and OptQuest. The objective of the optimization was maximum profit while the system capacity is considered as constraint. The environmental load of ELV can be minimized when the composition and function of each station are embodied in detail and the system is interfaced with shredding operation.

  • Recently, the discretization algorithms for continuous data have been actively studied. But there are few articles to compare the efficiency of these algorithms. In this paper we introduce the principles of some binary discretization algorithms including C4.5, CART and QUEST and investigate the efficiency of these algorithms through numerical study. For various underlying distribution, we compare these algorithms in view of misclassification rate and MSE. Real data examples are also included.

  • Spacecraft attitude estimation using the nonlinear unscented filter is addressed to fully utilize capabilities of the unscented transformation. To release significant computational load, an efficient technique is proposed by reasonably removing correlation between random variables. This modification introduces considerable reduction of sigma points and computational burden in matrix square-root calculation for most nonlinear systems. Unscented filter technique makes use of a set of sample points to predict mean and covariance. The general QUEST(QUaternion ESTimator) algorithm preserves explicitly the quaternion normalization, whereas extended Kalman filter(EKF) implicitly obeys the constraint. For spacecraft attitude estimation based on quaternion, an approach to computing quaternion means from sampled quaternions with guarantee of the quaternion norm constraint is introduced applying a constrained optimization technique. Finally, the performance of the new approach is demonstrated using a star tracker and rate-gyro measurements.
