  • This study investigates the application of dilatometer test for evaluating the deformation characteristics of granular soil. $K_D$ is the most sensitive to the stress history among CPT and DMT measurements, and $E_D$ and $q_c$ are observed to be similarly affected by the stress history. The coefficient of at-rest earth pressure($K_0$) is an indirect measure evaluating the stress history of granular soil. A relation using only DMT indices provides appropriate prediction of $K_0$ values. Although penetration of dilatometer inevitably induces the failure of cementation bonds, $E_D$ reflects the deformation characteristics of undamaged cementation relatively well. Therefore, a slightly better prediction of M value for cemented sand is achieved by using $E_D$ rather than $q_c$. Because of the weaker particle strength of calcareous sand compared than quartz sand, the majority of sand particles adjacent to dilatometer probe will be crushed during penetration. The particle crushing will induce the less contraction of the dilatometer membrane during penetration, consequently, the smaller $K_D$ and $E_D$ of calcareous sand.

  • In this study, a Jeju sand, which contains both siliceous and calcareous materials, was sampled from a beach in Jeju Island. It is observed that the Jeju sand has high extreme void ratios due to the angularity of grains and the intra-particle voids of hollow particles. From cone penetration test using calibration chamber system, it is found that the cone tip resistance($q_c$)-relative density(Dr)-vertical effective stress(${\sigma_v}'$) relation of Jeju sand almost matches to that of high compressible quartz sand. However, this correlation overestimates the relative density of a coastal sediments in Jeju Island maybe due to the cementation effect of this area. From analysis of the results of cone penetration and SPS tests at a coastal area in Jeju Island, it seems reasonable to assume that the coast of Jeju Island is a natural cemented sediments.

  • This study investigated the variation of the threshold strain and pore water pressure response of the coils at high amplitude vibration using resonant column test. As a result of tests, threshold shear strains of soft clay, clean quartz sand and stiff volcanic deposit were turned out to be 1$\times$10-2%, 1$\times$10-3%, 1$\times$10-4% respectively. Also, threshold shear Strain was found to be changed with confining pressure for the clean quartz sand. An increase of pore water pressure with shear strain was not significant within the shear strain 3~4$\times$10-3%, but it was abruptly increased beyond shear strain 1$\times$10-2%.

  • The thermal conductivity of soils is an important property in energy-related geotechnical structures, such as underground heat pumps and underground electric power cable tunnels. This study explores the effects of geotechnical engineering properties on the thermal conductivity of soils. The thermal conductivities of quartz sands and Korean weathered silty sands were documented via a series of laboratory experiments, and its variations with effective stress, porosity, and water saturation were examined. While thermal conductivity was found to increase with an increase in the effective stress and water saturation and with a decrease in porosity, replacing air by water in pores the most predominantly enhanced the thermal conductivity by almost one order of magnitude. In addition, we have suggested an improved model for thermal conductivity prediction, based on water saturation, dry thermal conductivity, saturated thermal conductivity, and a fitting parameter that represents the curvature of the thermal conductivity-water saturation relation.

  • Nearly 300 bottom sediments and 20 box-cores were sampled from the Asan bay. The central portion of the Asan bay is covered by sand, slightly gravelly sand and gravelly muddy sand. Between the central and marginal zones gravelly mud and slightly gravelly sandy mud are characteristically distributed. The gravel population in the sediments seems to be originated from the rocky bottom on the area near the bay because the gravel is angular and composed of the schist and gneiss. The quartz/feldspar ratio is about 3/2. It is considered to be that the amount of feldspar in this bay is much higher than that of any other areas in the Yellow Sea. This is considerd to be comparatively short distance of transport ion of these sediment from the provenance.

  • The carbonate sands of the Sabkha layer in the Middle East have very low shear strength. Therefore, instant settlement and time-dependent secondary settlement occur when inner voids are exposed, as in the case of particle crushing. We analyzed settlement of the Sabkha layer under a large-scale foundation by hydrotesting, and compared the field test results with the results of laboratory tests. With ongoing particle crushing, we observed the following stress-strain behaviors: strain-hardening (Sabkha GL-1.5 m), strain-perfect (Sabkha GL-7.0 m), and strain-softening (Sabkha GL-7.5 m). General shear failure occurred most frequently in dense sand and firm ground. Although the stress-strain behavior of Sabkha layer carbonate sand that of strain-softening, the particle crushing strength was low compared with the strain-hardening and strain-perfect behaviors. The stress-strain behaviors differ between carbonate sand and quartz sand. If the relative density of quartz sand is increased, the shear strength is also increased. Continuous secondary compression settlement occurred during the hydrotests, after the dissipation of porewater pressure. Particle crushing strength is relatively low in the Sabkha layer and its stress-strain behavior is strain-softening or strain-perfect. The particle crushing effect is dominant factor affecting foundation settlement in the Sabkha layer.

  • This paper describes a dune field on shoreline of Young Gwang. To clarify geomorphic characteristics, made an analysis of grain size of the sand sediments samples and surface texture of quartz grains, and field survey. The following results were obtained : 1) Young Gwang sand dune is taking to pieces by human impact, and dose not move ahead the process of sand dune. 2) there was a turbulence of sand sediments outcrops saying to the cryoturbation that represents cold climatic environments, 3) Constituents of sand dune are mainly fine and very fine sand(2.5~4.5Φ) consisted by quartz and feldspar. Young Gwang sand grians have some analogy with different sites in west coast 4) In surface texture, roundness is thought to have been formed sub-angular, and some V cracks represented mechanical weathering environments. Especially, the dune environment has significant cultural and archaeological values arising from the occupation of human in the past. Those areas where occupation is known provide a valuable source of past records relating to human settlement.

  • Transports of heterogeneously charged particles were investigated based on column experiments. Synthesized mono-dispersed ferrihydrite (${\sim}100nm$) and amorphous $SiO_2\;({\sim}40nm\;and\;{\sim}80nm)$ particles, of which surfaces are oppositely charged under pH < 9.0 (ferrihydrite, positive; amorphous silica, negative), were used. $177{\sim}250{\mu}m$ quartz sand was used as a stationary matrix. The results show that even favorable particles (i.e., ferrihydrite) can show a conservative transport through the oppositely charged media (i.e., quartz) when they coexist with humic acid or with much greater number of oppositely charged particles. These results imply that transports of both negatively and positively charged contaminants may be possible at the same time under a condition of heterogeneous colloidal system.

  • Placer gold deposits is mainly distributed in the Takaoi area. The alluvium is unconsolidated or semiconsolidated deposit consisting of gravel, sand, and soil beds in ascending order. They unconformably overlies the Carboniferous-Permian schist and Cretaceous granodiorite substratum. Based on detailed facies analysis, the alluvium can be interpreted as a typical fluvial deposits containing gravel and sand beds of channel-fill unit and soil deposit of floodplain. Gold grains are included mainly in the gravel bed and vein quartz is only contained gold among all kinds of gravels. These features indicates that the source rock of the gold grain is vein quartz and gold grains are separated from vein quartz during transport and abrasion. The reserves of gold in this area reach to at least 792 kg.
