Generation of a 3D Artificial Joint Surface and Characterization of Its Roughness (삼차원 인공 절리면의 생성과 이에 대한 거칠기 특성 평가)

  • Roughness of a joint surface is one of the most important parameters that affects the mechanical and hydraulic behavior of rock mass. Therefore, various studies on making constitutive model and/or roughness quantification have been conducted in experimental and empirical manners. Advances in recent 3D printing technology can be utilized to generate a joint surface with a specific roughness. In this study, a reliable technique to generate a rough joint surface was introduced and its quantitative assessment was made. Random midpoint displacement method was applied to generate a joint surface and the distribution of $Z_2$ was investigated to assess its roughness. As a result, a certain roughness can be embodied by controlling input parameters and furthermore it was able to generate a joint surface with specific roughness anisotropy.

A Study on the Surface Roughness of Corroded Reinforcing Rebar (부식된 철근의 표면 거칠기에 관한 연구)

  • This paper discusses the surface roughness of corroded reinforcement rebar in reinforced concrete structures focusing on the quantitative measurement technique for rebar corrosion. Reinforcement rebar was corroded using accelerated corrosion induced method and corrosion rates were 0%, 1%, 2%, 3%, 5%, and 10% of mass losses. Using 3-dimensional scanner each surface profile of reinforcement rebar was established, and surface roughness was measured. Through tests and analyses of corroded reinforcement rebar, the following topics were particularly discussed: measurement of surface roughness, relationship between area and surface roughness, relationship between surface roughness and bond performance. As a result, surface roughness of corroded rebar was found to be very effective to bond strength until 2% of corrosion rate. It was also discussed how to relate surface roughness of corroded rebar to bond strength of reinforced concrete structures.

Effects of Cutting Parameters on Surface Roughness in Planing Using Taguchi Method (다구찌 실험 계획법을 활용한 평삭 가공에서의 표면 거칠기에 대한 절삭조건 영향 분석)

  • The complex effects of the machining parameters make it is difficult to control and predict surface roughness. The theoretical surface roughness observed during mechanical machining with a round tool is determined by the tool radius and pitch. However, it was revealed that other parameters, such as the depth of cut and cutting speed, also affect surface roughness. This study adapted the Taguchi method, which can analyze the effects of cutting parameters quantitatively with an efficient number of experiments, to optimize the parameters for better surface roughness. Experiments were designed based on an orthogonal array, and the quantitative effects on the surface roughness were analyzed using the S/N ratio. The surface roughness was affected by all parameters, especially the tool radius. The optimum cutting parameter values obtained in this study showed better surface roughness than the other combinations of the parameters.

Estimation Method of the Design Wind Load of Soundproof Wall Using GIS (GIS를 이용한 방음벽의 설계풍하중 산정방법)

  • Recently deformed or destroyed of soundproof wall by local winds and typhoon has increased. This research proposed the estimation method of the design wind load of soundproof wall using spatial information analysis based on 1:5,000 digital map and performed comparative analysis with actual application cases. According to the result of quantitative evaluation using GIS, the surface roughness in the downtown area packed with buildings was III and the surface roughness in the suburban district with a relatively small number of buildings was II and the surface roughness in the district packed with open areas and typical farmhouses was I. This shows that the wind load of the soundproof walls reflecting the actual surface conditions was estimated. If the quantitative GIS analysis presented in this study is applied to wind-resistant design of soundproof walls, it is supposed that this will be helpful in more rational wind-resistant design by remedying the existing problem in which the wind load varies depending on designer's subjectivity.

  • This study was performed to evaluate the effect of surface roughness on pump performance. To this end this, using commercial codes, ANSYS CFX and BladeGen, we simulated pump performance in terms of efficiency, head and shaft power, both with and without surface roughness. Finally simulation and experiment results were compared for a quantitative analysis. The results of this comparison showed that surface roughness led to an about 7% reduction in pump efficiency.

  • In this study, we have investigated the closure behavior of fatigue cracks in SAPH440 steel plates under a mixed-mode I+II loading. A crack image capturing system as a direct measuring method was used to measure the closure levels at a crack tip. The crack closure levels in the fluctuation and stable sections were increased with the increase of the mode mixture ratio. The mode mixture ratio independent fatigue crack propagation rates equation was calculated by considering mixed-mode crack closure levels. The equation was examined according to the application method of crack opening ratio. The fracture surface analysis by C-scan method was also performed in order to investigate the closure mechanism and propagation mode of crack under the mixed-mode I+II loading. The crack closure under the mixed mode I+II is confirmed as a surface roughness closure by the quantitative analysis of fracture surface using the proposed surface roughness parameter.

  • Environmental contamination creates shortages of potable water. In such situations, the leakage of water due to breakage or aging of rubber valve seats is a serious problem. Rubber is apt to break when it is placed between two materials that contact each other. One way to avoid water leakage due to rubber damage and breakdown is to replace the rubber with metal, which is currently taking place in water distribution systems. In tribology, a severe form of wear is characterized by local macroscopic material transfer or removal, or by problems with sliding protrusions when two solid surfaces experience relative sliding under load. One of the major problems when metal slides is the occurrence of galling. Experimentally, various conditions influence incipient galling, such as hardness, surface roughness, temperature, load, velocity, and the external environment. This study sought to verify the galling tendencies of metal according to its hardness, surface roughness, load, and sliding velocity, and determine the quantitative effect of each factor on the galling tendencies.

  • In this paper, the effect of TiN-coating on product quality such as dimensional accuracy and surface roughness is experimentally investigated. A punch of SKD11 material in cold forging an automotive bearing shaft and its related process found in a cold forging company are selected as the test example. The effect of TiN-coating is revealed in a quantitative manner. It is to be noted that TiN-coating is effective in controlling the dimensional accuracy and surface roughness as well as in increasing tool lift.

Experimental Investigation on the Effect of Low-Speed Icing Condition to the Surface Roughness Formation (저속 결빙조건이 표면 조도 형성에 미치는 영향에 관한 실험적 연구)

  • In the field of aircraft icing prediction, surface roughness has been considered as critical factor because it enhances convective heat transfer and changes local collection efficiency. For this significance, experimental studies have been conducted to acquire the quantitative data of the formation process. Meanwhile, these experiments was conducted under low-speed condition due to the measurement difficulties. However, it has not been investigated that how the flow characteristic of low-speed will effects to the surface roughness. Therefore, the present study conducted experiment under low-speed icing condition, and analyzed the relation between surface roughness characteristics and icing condition. As an analysis method, the dominant parameters used in the previous high-speed experiments are employed, and roughness characteristics are compared. The size of roughness element was consistent with the previous known tendency, but not the smooth zone width.
