In a uniform field, when an electrode with a hemispherical protrusion is set in atmosphere, by applying the streamer breakdown criterion and the surface roughness factor, the effect of field distortion due to electrode surface roughness on breakdown is investigated theoretically. A quantitative relation between the threshold of breakdown and the air pressure times the heigh of protrusion is derived by the aid of a computor and the results are compared with that of SF$_{6}$./.
In order to introduce the touch to engineering and industries, it must be preceded to dstablish a quantitative barometer of the feeling. for this purpose, we developed a tactile measuring system to measure physical properties of texture, such as surface roughness, friction coefficient and compliance. The tactile measuring system uses a LASER type displacement sensor, which is a non-contacting system, in measuring the surface roughness. By considering that human tactile system is a contacting mechanism, this non-contacting method needs to be modified. As a precedent research of that, we compared the contacting and non-contacting method in this paper. Surface roughness of ten cloths were measured by using the measuring system, then compared to the test results using the Kawabata evaluation system(KES), which uses a contacting method in measuring the surface roughness.
This paper describes a new quantitative process for evaluating the roughness of discontinuity, which is suggested as a qualitative criteria in RMR or Q-system. For this purpose, the Delphi method which is one of the surveying methods was introduced. The selected panels were asked to evaluate the roughness of discontinuities on the Web which was hosted by authors in advance. A total of 3 surveys were performed using JRCs suggested by Barton and Choubey as well as Ai generated by the Monte Carlo simulations. After each survey, the results were provided to all panels for comparing their decisions to others. As surveys proceeded, better consensus and convergence were achieved. With a good agreement of panels on roughness classification, the quantitative criteria for roughness of discontinuity in RMR and Q-system was established in this study.

This paper summarizes the results of a study which uses the recently developed Optical Profile Microscopy technique (Dove and Frost, 1996) as the basis for investigating the role of geomembrane surface roughness on the shear strength of goomembrane/geotextile interfaces. The results show that interface friction can be quantitatively related to the surface roughness of the geomembrane. The peak and residual interface strengths increase dramatically through the use of textured geomembranes as opposed to smooth geomembranes. For the smooth geomembranes, the sliding of the geotextile is the main shear mechanism. For the textured geomembranes, the peak interface strength is mainly mobilized through the micro-texture of the geomembrane, however, the residual interface strength is primarily attributed to macro scale surface roughness which pulls out and breaks the filaments from the geotextile. The results of this study can be extended to the other interfaces such as joints in rock mass, and also can be used to provide a quantitative framework that can lead to a significantly improved basis for the selection and design of geotextiles and geomembranes in direct contact.

We investigated surface-roughness-dependent optical loss in a plasmonic cavity consisting of a semiconductor nanodisk/silver nanopan structure. Numerical simulations show that the quality factors of plasmonic resonant modes significantly depend on the surface roughness of the dielectric-metal interface in the cavity structure. In the transverse-magnetic-like whispering-gallery plasmonic mode excited in a structure with disk diameter of 1000 nm, the total quality factor decreased from 260 to 130 with increasing root-mean-square (rms) surface roughness from 0 to 5 nm. This quantitative theoretical study shows that the smooth metal surface plays a critical role in high-performance plasmonic devices.
The interfacial adhesion energy between resist and a substrate is very important due to resist pull-off problems during separation of mold from a substrate in nanoimprint process. And effect of substrate surface roughness on interfacial adhesion energy is very important. In this paper, we have treated glass wafer surface using $CF_4$ gas for increase surface roughness and it has tested interfacial adhesion properties of UV resin/glass substrate interfaces by 4 point bending test. The interfacial adhesion energies by bare, 30, 60 and 90 sec surface treatments are 0.62, 1.4, 1.36 and 2 $J/m^2$, respectively. The test results showed quantitative comparisons of interfacial fracture energy (G) effect of glass wafer surface roughness.

This paper summarizes the results of a study which uses the recently developed Optical Profile Microscopy technique (Dove and Frost, 1996) as the basis for investigating the role of geomembrane surface roughness on the shear mechanism of geomembrane/geotextile interfaces. The alternative roughness parameters which consider the direction of shearing are described. These directional parameters are compared with the existing roughness parameters, and the relationship between these directional and non-directional parameters are investigated. Then, the relationship between interface shear strength and surface roughness quantified at the interface is investigated. In this study, the influence of various factors on surface roughness was investigated using the Taguchi experimental method through high-speed machining processing. Feed rate, pitch, tool diameter, and depth of cut are widely applied to high-speed machining conditions for mold production. Each of these factors was implemented and classified into three levels; then, after high speed machining, surface roughness was measured, the S/N ratio was analyzed, and the influence on the surface roughness of control factors was analyzed quantitatively by ANOVA. Using this information, a mathematical model for predicting surface roughness was derived from multiple regression analysis. This mathematical model enables the surface roughness value after high-speed machining to be predicted at the production stage, before machining, for a wide range of machining conditions.
Fatigue tests were performed to investigate how much vary the fatigue limit under the different surface conditions on Carbon Steel(SM55C). Four types of specimen which have different surface roughness each other, Series A by turning, Series B by grinding, Series C by polishing and Series D by roller finishing showed the fatigue limit of 265, 320, 335 and 365MPa, respectively. Series D show 36% higher than Series A, which is caused by compressive residential stress on the surface. Therefore, roller finishing machining is helpful not only increase the fatigue limit but also improve the surface roughness. Moreover, to predict the fatigue limit under the conditions of knowing surface roughness and hardness of specimen, ${\sqrt{area}}$ area parameter method is very useful.
Physically-based resampling scheme for roughness coefficient of surface runoff considering the spatial landuse distribution was suggested for the purpose of effective operational application of recent grid-based distributed rainfall runoff model. Generally grid scale(mother scale) of hydrologic modeling can be greater than the scale (child scale) of original GIS thematic digital map when the objective basin is wide or topographically simple, so the modeler uses large grid scale. The resampled roughness coefficient was estimated and compared using 3 different schemes of Predominant, Composite and Mosaic approaches and total runoff volume and peak streamflow were computed through distributed rainfall-runoff model. For quantitative assessment of biases between computational simulation and observation, runoff responses for the roughness estimated using the 3 different schemes were evaluated using MAPE(Mean Areal Percentage Error), RMSE(Root-Mean Squared Error), and COE(Coefficient of Efficiency). As a result, in the case of 500m scale Mosaic resampling for the natural and urban basin, the distribution of surface runoff roughness coefficient shows biggest difference from that of original scale but surface runoff simulation shows smallest, especially in peakflow rather than total runoff volume.
