The increasing number of mobile users and the popularity of real-time applications make wired-wireless integrated network extremely attractive. In this case, quality of service (QoS) adaptability is particularly important since some important features of the integrated network call for QoS adaptability, such as mobility, bursty applications and so on. Traditional QoS schemes include integrated service (IntServ) and differentiated service (DiffSev) as well as their variants. However, they are not able to balance well between scalability and QoS granularity. For example, IntServ faces the scalability problem, while DiffServ can only provide coarse granular QoS. In addition, they are also unable to efficiently support QoS adaptability. Therefore, a per-packet differentiated queueing service (DQS) was proposed. DQS was originally proposed to balance between scalability and QoS granularity in wired networks and then extended to wireless networks. This paper mainly discusses how to use DQS to support QoS adaptability in wired-wireless integrated networks. To this end, we propose a scheme to determine dynamic delay bounds, which is the key step to implement DQS to support QoS adaptability. Simulation studies along with some discussions are further conducted to investigate the QoS adaptability of the proposed scheme, especially in terms of its support of QoS adaptability to mobility and to bursty real-time applications.
New multimedia services over the cellular/WLAN overlay networks require different Quality of Service (QoS). Therefore, efficient network management system is necessary in order to provide QoS sensitive multimedia services while enhancing network performance. In this paper, we propose a new online network management scheme that implements bandwidth reservation, congestion and transmission control strategies. Our online approach to network management exhibits dynamic adaptability, flexibility, and responsiveness to the current traffic conditions in multimedia overlay networks. Simulation results indicate the superior performance of our proposed scheme to strike the appropriate performance balance between contradictory QoS requirements under widely varying diverse traffic loads.

Internet-based social and interactive video applications have become major constituents of the envisaged applications for next-generation multimedia networks. However, inherently dynamic network conditions, together with varying user expectations, pose many challenges for resource allocation mechanisms for such applications. Yet, in addition to addressing these challenges, service providers must also consider how to mitigate their operational costs (e.g., energy costs, equipment costs) while satisfying the end-user quality of service (QoS) expectations. This paper proposes a heuristic solution to the problem, where the energy incurred by the applications, and the monetary costs associated with the service infrastructure, are minimized while simultaneously maximizing the average end-user QoS. We evaluate the performance of the proposed solution in terms of serving probability, i.e., the likelihood of being able to allocate resources to groups of users, the computation time of the resource allocation process, and the adaptability and sensitivity to dynamic network conditions. The proposed method demonstrates improvements in serving probability of up to 27%, in comparison with greedy resource allocation schemes, and a several-orders-of-magnitude reduction in computation time, compared to the linear programming approach, which significantly reduces the service-interrupted user percentage when operating under variable network conditions.

Efficient bandwidth management is necessary in order to provide high quality service to users in a multimedia wireless/mobile network. In this paper, I propose an on-line load balancing algorithm with preemption. This technique is able to balance the traffic load among cells accommodating heterogeneous multimedia services while ensuring efficient bandwidth utilization. The most important features of my algorithm are its adaptability, flexibility and responsiveness to current network conditions. In addition, my online scheme to control bandwidth adaptively is a cell-oriented approach. This approach has low complexity making it practical for real cellular networks. Simulation results indicate the superior performance of my algorithm.
In this paper, an algorithm that provisions absolute differentiation of packet delays is proposed with an objective for enhancing quality of service (QoS) in future packet networks. It features an adaptive scheme that compensates the deviation for prediction on the traffic to be arrived continuously. It predicts the traffic to be arrived at the beginning of a time slot and measures the actual arrived traffic at the end of the time slot, and derives the deviation between the two quantity. The deviation is utilized to the delay control operation for the next time slot to offset it. As it compensates the prediction error continuously, it shows superior adaptability to the bursty traffic as well as the constant rate traffic. It is demonstrated through simulation that the algorithm meets the quantitative delay bounds and shows superiority to the traffic fluctuation in comparison with the conventional mechanism.
In this paper, an algorithm that provisions proportional differentiation of packet delays is proposed with an objective for enhancing quality of service (QoS) in future packet networks. It features an adaptive scheme that adjusts the target delay every time slot to compensate the deviation from the target delay which is caused by the prediction error on the traffic to be arrived in the next time slot. It predicts the traffic to be arrived at the beginning of a time slot and measures the actual arrived traffic at the end of the time slot. The difference between them is utilized to the delay control operation for the next time slot to offset it. As it compensates the prediction error continuously, it shows superior adaptability to the bursty traffic as well as the exponential rate traffic. It is demonstrated through simulations that the algorithm meets the quantitative delay bounds and shows superiority to the traffic fluctuation in comparison with the conventional non-adaptive mechanism. The algorithm is implemented with VHDL on a Xilinx Spartan XC3S1500 FPGA and the performance is verified under the test board based on the XPC860P CPU.

In accordance with the development of information and communications technology, a network user has to be able to use quality of service (QoS)-based multimedia services easily. Thus, information and communications operators began to focus on a technique for providing multimedia services. The IP Multimedia Subsystem (IMS) is a platform based on Internet Protocol (IP) as a technology for providing multimedia services and application services. The emerging 5G networks are described as having massive capacity and connectivity, adaptability, seamless heterogeneity, and great flexibility. The explosive growth in network services and devices for 5G will cause excessive traffic loads. In this paper, software-defined networking (SDN) is applied as a kind of virtualization technology for the network in order to minimize the traffic load, and Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP) is used to provide more efficient network management. To accomplish these purposes, we suggest the design of a dynamic routing algorithm to be utilized in the IMS network using SDN and an SNMP private management information base (MIB). The proposal in this paper gives information and communications operators the ability to supply more efficient network resources.
