This study was conducted to improve commercial quality of a cut spray chrysanthemum 'Gama' bred in Korea by foliar application of daminozide (DMZ), suppressing excessive elongation of peduncle caused by high temperature in summer season production. Applications were made at three floral bud developmental stages (I, II, and III), and concentrations used were 0, 500, 1000, and $2000mg{\cdot}L^{-1}$. Both cut flower length and peduncle length showed the greatest suppression of elongation by DMZ treatments at stage II. DMZ also gradually reduced values of those in a concentration-dependant manner. Stem thickness and flower diameter reduced compared to control as DMZ was sprayed at later stage and those two characteristics decreased in a concentration-dependant manner. The number of paralleled flowers neighboring apical part of whole plant showed the best results at stage I and II. As for DMZ concentration, those increased effectively at $500-1,000mg{\cdot}L^{-1}$. Among all combinations, $1,000mg{\cdot}L^{-1}$ DMZ at stage II recorded the most paralleled flowers and showed 24.2% increment as compared to control. The number of fully expanded flowers and total floral buds also showed the highest values using $1,000mg{\cdot}L^{-1}$ DMZ at stage II than the other treatments. In cut spray chrysanthemum cultivar 'Gama' bred in Korea, foliar-spraying with $1,000mg{\cdot}L^{-1}$ DMZ at stage II most effectively suppressed excessive peduncle elongation, parallelled flower cluster arrangement, and increased the number of flowers in summer. However, this combination affected negatively the other commercial qualities, reducing cut flower length, stem thickness, and flower diameter. Therefore, we recommended that foliar-spraying stage and DMZ concentration was stage I and $1,000mg{\cdot}L^{-1}$, respectively, in a practical culture for 'Gama'.
This study aims to see what changes flower arrangement programs bring to the stress index of elderly people with chronic diseases and its correlation with cognition. Furthermore, seniors from a day care center and a nursing home were compared for the purpose of identifying the effectiveness of flower arrangement activities as a supplementary remedy designed to relieve the symptoms and improve the quality of life of patients with chronic diseases. In this study, 24 seniors with chronic diseases were divided into two groups: Group A consists of 15 seniors from a day care center and Group B consists of nine seniors from a nursing home. Both groups participated in simple flower arrangement activities in 10 sessions. In each session, red and green cut flowers that were preferred by the elderly were provided to elicit and develop their thoughts and behaviors. The results showed that the overall average stress index was significantly reduced from 58.0±11.6 before the program to 50.6±17.1 after the program (p = .037). This study examined that the program was more effective for Group A (p = .021) than for Group B (p = .678). Results of the correlation analysis showed that there was no correlation between cognitive function and stress index (p = .569), but that the activity was more effective for Group A. This study shows that arranging flowers effectively lowers the stress index of elderly people with chronic diseases. Also, sharing the outcomes of such activities with others or continuously caring for the flowers even after the activity can maximize the effectiveness of the therapy and rehabilitation. Thus, the study concluded that the program needs to be applied continuously, not in the short-term, in order to relieve or treat the symptoms of elderly patients with chronic diseases.
In this experiment, the effects on the growth and the quality of cut flowers of chrysanthemum 'Jinba' were mainly concerned depending on cultural methods between the pinching and the non-pinching. According to the results, the sufficient period of the vegetative growth was necessary to enter the flower bud differentiation in case of the non-pinching cultivation whereas it was not the case on the pinching. As compared with the pinching, the non-pinching showed 10% higher in the flowering ratio after flower bud differentiation. The flowering ratio of the non-pinching exceeded more than 95% but the pinching showed below 95% of the flowering ratio after flower bud differentiation. Comparing the number of cutting flowers between pinching and non-pinching, it was the non-pinching that showed the production of the first grade cutting flowers about 5 weeks faster than that of the pinching. It seem to be possible that harvesting time and growing period could be shortened. In the non-pinching growing region, above third-grading marketable cut flowers was 100% regardless of planting time. On the contrary, the pinching method showed 84.7% of marketable cutting flowers at first week from the planting, followed by 64.3% at second week, 18.8% at third week, and 2.6% at fourth week. Marketability of cutting flowers indicates that were planted by the pinching is very poor. When draw a comparison between the fourth-week planting of the non-pinching with the first-week planting of the pinching, the non-pinching could cut the growing period 38 days shorter than the pinching and the marketability was better. These results indicate that the non-pinching method can shorten the growing period and harvesting time compared to the pinching and it also resulted in reduction of cost and rapid production of the cutting flowers.
An investigation was conducted to elucidate the effect of sucrose, germicides and abscisic acid (ABA) in the preservatives on postharvest quality, such as fresh weight, solution uptake, vase life, diameter and thickness of flower, and chlorolhyll of leaf in cut chrysanthemum 'Kyoungsubang`. Fresh weight of cut chrysanthemum was highest in 250mg/L aluminum sulfate [{TEX}$Al_{2}(SO_{4})_{3}${/TEX}]+3% sucrose and 250 mg/L 8-hydroxyquinoline sulfate (8-HQS)+ 3% sucrose. Addition of sucrose and germicides inhibited microorganisms growth in solution, and apparently promoted solution uptake. The increased fresh weight seems to attribute to the elevated uptake. Germicide 8-HQS was more effective than {TEX}$Al_{2}(SO_{4})_{3}${/TEX} in the aspect of solution uptake and fresh weight. Treatment of 250 mg/L 8-HQS +3% sucrose showed the longest vase life (24.67±2.52 days) and the lowest rate of leaf chlorosis (or senescence). Addition of {TEX}$Al_{2}(SO_{4})_{3}${/TEX} and sucrose accelerated leaf chlorosis and increased diameter of flower, respectively. Sucrose treatment prolonged the vase life of flowers. Except control and 250 mg/L 8-HQS, content of chlorophyll was rapidly decreased after 6 days at upper, middle and lower leaves in order.

The objective of this study was to investigate the effect of triazole compounds [hexaconazole ($50mg{\cdot}L^{-1}$), diniconazole ($50mg{\cdot}L^{-1}$), myclobutanil ($150mg{\cdot}L^{-1}$), difenoconazole ($50mg{\cdot}L^{-1}$), tebuconazole ($500mg{\cdot}L^{-1}$), and bitertanol ($50mg{\cdot}L^{-1}$)] on commercial quality improvement of cut flowers of Dendranthema grandiflorum 'Baegkwang' Plant height, cut flower length and internode length decreased by all triazole compounds. Plant height, cut flower length, internode length and flower neck length were shortened by treatment of $50mg{\cdot}L^{-1}$ diniconazole and $500mg{\cdot}L^{-1}$ tebuconazole. Flower neck was thickened by hexaconazole and myclobutanil. Flower diameter increased with myclobutanil and bitertanol, while it decreased with tebuconazole. Among physiological injury, open center increased with bitertanol treatment. Overall $50mg{\cdot}L^{-1}$ diniconazole and $500mg{\cdot}L^{-1}$ tebuconazole showed a possitive effect on length flower neck and increasing chlorophyll content, while decreasing plant height, cut flower length and diameter of flowers. Thus it is necessary to consider kind, concentration, and treatment times for effective control of cut flower quality.

This research was aimed to extend the vase life, improve the cut flower quality and promote flowering rate of bulbous cut Iris 'Blue Magic'. Three different concentrations of 1-MCP ranging from 250 to $750nL{\cdot}L^{-1}$ were treated on cut Iris flowers for the vase life elongation. Several effects of 1-MCP treatment has shown such as early flowering as one day but vase life showed no significant differences comparing to the untreated control. Flowering rate was 75% or more in the treated ones as compare to 64.2% in untreated control. Especially, in a treatment with $250nL{\cdot}L^{-1}$ 1-MCP for 12 hours it showed all flowering. In many post-harvest experiments of cut flowers, ethylene production from flower organ has considered as most critical factor on vase life. Ethylene production from flower organ was measured by gas chromatography (GC) and it showed that there is no direct relation between flower longevity and emission of the ethylene gas in cut Iris. In comparison with the untreated control, ethylene generation rather seems to be increased as 1-MCP treatment increased. There was a synergy effect when 1-MCP and BA applied simultaneously in which flowering and vase life were fastened and also extended, respectively. Therefore, treatment of 1-MCP for cut Iris at flower early harvest is able to improve the flower quality both by diminishing non-flowering rate and by extended flower longevity.
To lesson economical loss induced by fumigation in importing country when cut roses are exported, effects of several fumigation temperature, treatments of cut stems (dry or wet), methyl bromide (MB) concentrations, and fumigation periods on the quality of cut roses were investigated. According to results, the most important factor affecting the quality of cut rose was found to be fumigation temperature. When fumigated at $5^{\circ}C$, cut roses showed no chemical damages, e.g., tip burn or bent neck, and maintained their quality for the same duration as that of control, regardless of MB concentrations or treatments of cut stems. However, phytotoxicity by MB increased and vase life of cut rose was shortened as fumigation temperature increased. Timing of fumigation also appeared to be an important factor affecting the quality of cut roses of which phytotoxicity by MB was not observed and thier vase life was not shortened, even if MB was treated up to $40g{\cdot}m^{-3}$, when cut roses were fumigated at $5^{\circ}C$ on the day of harvesting. On the other hand, the degree of damage of cut flowers by fumigation methods or MB concentraions was not consistent with changes in fumigation temperature.
This study was carried out to determine the effect of dose and timing of gamma irradiation and post-irradiation treatment with some preservatives of cut flowers on their longevity of rose and chrysanthemum. Cut roses which were soaked in 2% sugar solution persist to 0.75 kGy irradiation treatments. In post-treatments with some preservative solutions, the mixture group of 2% sucrose,2000m silver nitrate and 3.0% crysal were available in flower quality, but the 200 ppm silver nitrate solution treatment showed serious blackening of floral stems and resulted On negative effect in flower quality. Effect of gamma irradiation and all preservative solutions on the cut mum longevity were showed almost same tendency with rose cut flower longevity experiments. The 2% sugar dipping solution in mum cut flower showed the most superior preservative effect compared with the my other preservative solutions tested. Also non-irradiated treatment extended to flower up to complete wilt.
This study was conducted to improve commercial quality of a cut spray chrysanthemum 'Ilweol' bred in Korea by foliar application of daminozide, suppressing excessive elongation of peduncle caused by high temperature in summer season production. Applications were made at three floral bud developmental stage (I, II, and III), and concentrations used were 0, 500, 1000, and $2000mg{\cdot}L^{-1}$. Cut flower length and peduncle length showed the greatest repression of elongation through daminozide treatments at stage III and stage II, respectively. Daminozide also gradually reduced values of those in a concentration-dependant manner. Flower diameter increased compared to control as daminozide was sprayed at later stage but decreased in daminozide concentration-dependant manner. Angle of flower cluster on apical part of whole plant showed the best results when sprayed with $2,000mg{\cdot}L^{-1}$ at stage III. Among all combinations, $2,000mg{\cdot}L^{-1}$ daminozide at stage II recorded the highest angle of flower cluster and showed 31.3% increment as compared to control. The number of fully expanded flowers showed the highest values using $2,000mg{\cdot}L^{-1}$ daminozide at stage III than the other treatments and total floral buds also showed the highest values using $2,000mg{\cdot}L^{-1}$ daminozide at stage I than the other treatments. In cut spray chrysanthemum cultivar 'Ilweol' bred in Korea, foliar-applying with $2,000mg{\cdot}L^{-1}$ at stage III most effectively suppressed excessive peduncle elongation, angle of flower cluster, and increased the number of flowers in summer. However, this combination affected negatively the other commercial qualities, reducing cut flower length and flower diameter. Therefore, we recommended that foliar application stage and daminozide concentration was stage III and $500mg{\cdot}L^{-1}$, respectively, in a practical culture and cut flower quality for 'Ilweol'.

This experiment was conducted to investigate the effect of soil moisture content on cut flower quality of Gypsophila paniculata L. 'Bristol Fairy' in spring and autumn cultivations. The soil moisture potential (SMP) set point for irrigation was either -3.2 or -10.0kPa in the vegetative growth stage, and -10.0, -31.6, or -79.4kPa after the budding stage. When soil moisture reached at each set SMP point, 10 mm water was drip-irrigated. Tendency of flowering was earlier as SMP set point was lower in both vegetative growth and after budding stages. No other flower characteristics were found among other treatments. In both spring and autumn cultivations, as SMP set point was lower, the low primary branch length and upper internode length were decreased, the stem firmness was increased, and curvature of cut flower stem was decreased. Especially, in autumn, the higher the SMP set point, the higher the low primary branch than the apex, thus the paniculate inflorescence was deeply destroyed. Yield in spring cultivation was not significantly different among treatments, while that in autumn cultivation increased as the lower the SMP value. It is thought that optimal imgation points during vegetative growth and after budding stages to produce high quality cut flowers are -10.0 and -79.4kPa, respectively.
