  • We introduce a method of estimating an unknown failure rate function based on sample data. We estimate failure rate function by a function s from a space of cubic splines constrained to be linear (or constant) in tails using maximum likelihood estimation. The number of knots are determined by Bayesian Information Criterion(BIC). Examples using simulated data are used to illustrate the performance of this method.

  • This paper is concerned with the design of an appropriate sampling plan or stopping rule and the construction of estimate for the estimation of process or lot fraction defective. Various sampling plans which are well known or have potential applications are unified into a generalized sampling plan. Under this sampling plan sufficient statistic, probability distribution, moment, and minimum variance unbiased estimate are obtained. Results for various sampling plans can be derived as special cases. Then, under given parameter values, the relative efficiencies of the various sampling plans are compared with respect to expected sample sizes and variances of estimates.

  • For two independent random variables X and Y, the functional R=Pr[X>Y] is of practical importance in reliability. X can be interpreted as the strength of a component subjected to a stress Y, and R is the component's reliability. In this paper nonparametric approach to estimation of R based on censored observations in the strength variables is analyzed and compared by simulations in the moderate sample sizes.

  • Good estimation of the slopes of the mixture response function may be important as well as estimation of mean mixture response. It is possible to evaluate and compare several mixture designs with respect to the slope. A graphical method is proposed that allows us to evaluate a given design's support for the fitted model in terms of slope variance. We can plot variances of slopes along Cox direction according to existence of restriction of simplex region when comparing several different mixture designs.

  • We consider a nonparametric estimation of the renewal function. In this paper, we suggest modified methods for Frees's estimator to enhance the efficiency. The methods are based on a piecewise linearization and on the fact that the bounded monotonic functions converging pointwise to the bounded monotonic continuous function converge uniformly. In a simulation study, we show that the modified methods have the better efficiency than that introduced by Frees.

  • In this paper, we consider a hierarchical Bayes estimation of the parameter, the reliability and failure rate functions based on type-II censored samples from a Burr type-? failure time model. The Gibbs sampler a, pp.oach brings considerable conceptual and computational simplicity to the calculation of the posterior marginals and reliability. A numerical study is provided.

  • Estimation for the parameters of a bivariate exponential (BVE) model of Marshall and Olkin (1967) is investigated for the cases of complete sampling and time-truncated parallel sampling. Maximum likelihood estimators, method of moment estimators and Bayes estimators for the parameters of a BVE model are obtained and compared with each other. A Monte Cario simulation study for a moderate sized samples indicates that the Bayes estimators of parameters perform better than their maximum likelihood and method of moment estimators.

  • Recently, the quality of software has become a major issue. The statistical models used in making predictions about the quality of software are termed software reliability growth models (SRGM). However, the existing SRGMs have not been satisfactory in predicting software reliability behavior (Keiller and Miller(1991), Keiller and Littlewood(1984), Musa(1987)). In this paper, we present a fuzzy-based interval estimation of software errors (failures).

  • This paper considers maximum likelihood (ML) estimation of lifetime distribution under stress bounded ramp tests in which the stress is increased linearly from used condition stress to the stress u, pp.r bound. The following assumptions are used: exponential lifetime distribution under a constant stress, an inverse power law relationship between stress and mean of exponential lifetime distribution, and a cumulative exposure model for the effect of changing stress. Likelihood equations for the parameters involved in the model and asymptotic distribution of the estimators are obtained, and a numerical example is given.
