  • Many researchers have focused on developing bankruptcy prediction models using modeling techniques, such as statistical methods including multiple discriminant analysis (MDA) and logit analysis or artificial intelligence techniques containing artificial neural networks (ANN), decision trees, and support vector machines (SVM), to secure enhanced performance. Most of the bankruptcy prediction models in academic studies have used financial ratios as main input variables. The bankruptcy of firms is associated with firm's financial states and the external economic situation. However, the inclusion of qualitative information, such as the economic atmosphere, has not been actively discussed despite the fact that exploiting only financial ratios has some drawbacks. Accounting information, such as financial ratios, is based on past data, and it is usually determined one year before bankruptcy. Thus, a time lag exists between the point of closing financial statements and the point of credit evaluation. In addition, financial ratios do not contain environmental factors, such as external economic situations. Therefore, using only financial ratios may be insufficient in constructing a bankruptcy prediction model, because they essentially reflect past corporate internal accounting information while neglecting recent information. Thus, qualitative information must be added to the conventional bankruptcy prediction model to supplement accounting information. Due to the lack of an analytic mechanism for obtaining and processing qualitative information from various information sources, previous studies have only used qualitative information. However, recently, big data analytics, such as text mining techniques, have been drawing much attention in academia and industry, with an increasing amount of unstructured text data available on the web. A few previous studies have sought to adopt big data analytics in business prediction modeling. Nevertheless, the use of qualitative information on the web for business prediction modeling is still deemed to be in the primary stage, restricted to limited applications, such as stock prediction and movie revenue prediction applications. Thus, it is necessary to apply big data analytics techniques, such as text mining, to various business prediction problems, including credit risk evaluation. Analytic methods are required for processing qualitative information represented in unstructured text form due to the complexity of managing and processing unstructured text data. This study proposes a bankruptcy prediction model for Korean small- and medium-sized construction firms using both quantitative information, such as financial ratios, and qualitative information acquired from economic news articles. The performance of the proposed method depends on how well information types are transformed from qualitative into quantitative information that is suitable for incorporating into the bankruptcy prediction model. We employ big data analytics techniques, especially text mining, as a mechanism for processing qualitative information. The sentiment index is provided at the industry level by extracting from a large amount of text data to quantify the external economic atmosphere represented in the media. The proposed method involves keyword-based sentiment analysis using a domain-specific sentiment lexicon to extract sentiment from economic news articles. The generated sentiment lexicon is designed to represent sentiment for the construction business by considering the relationship between the occurring term and the actual situation with respect to the economic condition of the industry rather than the inherent semantics of the term. The experimental results proved that incorporating qualitative information based on big data analytics into the traditional bankruptcy prediction model based on accounting information is effective for enhancing the predictive performance. The sentiment variable extracted from economic news articles had an impact on corporate bankruptcy. In particular, a negative sentiment variable improved the accuracy of corporate bankruptcy prediction because the corporate bankruptcy of construction firms is sensitive to poor economic conditions. The bankruptcy prediction model using qualitative information based on big data analytics contributes to the field, in that it reflects not only relatively recent information but also environmental factors, such as external economic conditions.

  • Recently, failures of equipments are linked directly to extensive damages of human lives or financial losses from the increasing uses of train control equipments utilizing computers. Then safety activities have to progress for guaranteeing safety during the system life-cycle. In this paper, we examine the methods for risk analysis and assessment of safety activities and propose optimized one method for risk assessment. There are original risk assessment methods; risk graph and risk matrix method under the qualitative analysis, IRF(Individual Risk Formula) calculations and statistical calculations method under the quantitative analysis. Best-Practice(BP) risk analysis method is proposed for combining advantages of the qualitative and the quantitative analysis. In the comparison of risk graph and risk matrix method for safety estimation, BP method has no applications published up to now, but we can expect that this method will be utilized widely for the risk assessment due to various strong points.

  • Implementing UX design that meets user expectations has become an important variable that determines the prominence of smart home appliances. This study addresses the UX design evaluation issues in mobile application development of smart home appliances. As an experimental research subject, the UX design evaluation contents were set up for the mobile application of , the demand of which is surging recently. The purpose of the research is to explore the significance of the UX design user evaluation method in smart home applications, and to suggest how to achieve the mixing of quantitative and qualitative evaluation methods. The main findings are as follows. First, we found that user evaluation can positively impact the direction of UX design. Secondly, we found that the mixing of 'quantitative' and 'qualitative' methods works complementarily to UX design evaluation. Research implications are as follows. The UX design evaluation process can be performed efficiently as long as we distinguish between the roles of quantitative evaluation and qualitative evaluation. For example, through qualitative evaluation such as 'Honeycomb model', can be identified in terms of 'exploratory', and through qualitative evaluation such as 'in-depth user interview', can be identified in terms of 'assessment' and 'validation'.

  • Purpose : This retrospective mixed-methods study aimed to explore key considerations for designing effective simulated education in nursing, focusing specifically on the recognition and response to deteriorating patients. Methods : Quantitative and qualitative data were analyzed to assess the clinical judgment and performance of the nursing students. Descriptive statistics were used to analyze quantitative data related to prior knowledge, simulation satisfaction, clinical judgment, and nursing performance during deteriorating patient simulations. Qualitative content analysis was conducted for the reflective journal entries of the participants. Results : Quantitative analysis showed that most participants demonstrated a "being skillful" level of clinical judgment (33.1%) in effective response. At the beginner level, clinical judgment varied across effective noticing(39.7-82.8%), effective interpretating(77.6-82.8%), effective responding(3.4-86.2%), and effective reflecting(90.0-95.4%). Nursing performance in assessing patient respiration or SpO2 after request from a physician ranged from 46.6-48.3%. Qualitative analysis indicated that 48.5% of the participants anticipated a deteriorating condition and initiated appropriate actions, while 70% noticed patient unresponsiveness for the first time. Conclusion : To design an effective simulation program for identifying and addressing deteriorating patient care, a framework for observation and interpretation is essential, along with regular simulated training. It is important to design and assess simulation programs and to conduct thorough interviews with nursing students to gain insight into their clinical decision-making.

  • Ten promising polyvoltine mulberry silkworm strains(SDMGl, SDMG2, SDMG3, SDMG4, SDMWl, SDMW2, RMWl, RMW2, RMW3 and RMW4) that are superior in quantitative and qualitative traits have been synthesized in the polyvoltine breeding laboratory of Andhra Pradesh State Sericulture Research & Development Institute, Hindupur through systematic hybridization and appropriate selection methods. After the genotypes were found homozygous for the desired traits, they have been crossed with 3 bivoltine testers $(APS8, APS4 and {NB_2}{D_4})$ and thirty new hybrid combinations were developed for the assessment of their hybrid performance. Phenotypic expressions of economically important quantitative and qualitative traits of fist filial generation were measured and subjected for statistical analysis. Evaluation Index and Subordinate Function methods were employed for the assessment of hybrid performance since they are widely used in silkworm hybrid evaluation. Total of seven poly${\times}$bivoltine combinations, which ranked high in both the methods, were selected as potential combinations for further field test. These combinations also ranked significantly higher than the control hybrid (APMl${\times}$APS8).

  • Purpose: This mixed-methods study was conducted to compare and analyze the perceptions of children and their parents regarding the meaning of the children's life. Methods: First, children's and parents' perceptions of the meaning of life were analyzed using a quantitative approach, and the cognitive differences between children and parents were then confirmed through a qualitative approach. We integrated the collected data comprehensively. Results: Ten significant differences (awareness of strong points, recognizing oneself as a precious being, relationships with friends, happy memories, liking people, experiencing difficulty, dreams and goals, experiencing love, appreciating life, helping people who are poorer than me) were identified between children and parents. The results of the content analysis of the qualitative data were divided into two variables: children's experiences of the meaning of life (78 significant statements, 32 sub-themes, and 10 themes) and parents' perceptions of the meaning of life of their children (89 significant statements, 36 sub-themes, and 10 themes). Conclusion: Based on these results, we propose developing meaning-centered intervention programs for children and parents and applying them for educational purposes. By doing so, we expect that meaning-centered education for elementary school students will become more active.

  • The purpose of this study was to analyze the research trends of elementary mathematics education with regard to the topics, methods, subjects, and mathematical contents of such research. For this purpose, the papers published in domestic journals during the recent 5 years (2004-2009) were analyzed. A total of 383 papers from 8 professional journals were analyzed with the 4 criteria. First, the frequent research topics included instructional design and methods, learners' perspectives and abilities, and analysis of curriculum and textbooks in order. Second, qualitative research methodology was used twice as many as quantitative one. Whereas a survey was the most frequent quantitative research method, content analysis and case study were for qualitative methods. Third, research subjects included mainly typical students, specifically fifth and sixth graders. Papers dealing with lower graders or low-achievers as well as pre-service teachers were rare. Lastly, whereas the research on geometry as well as number and operations was active, that of measurement as well as probability and statistics was not. On the basis of these results, this paper includes several implications for the future research direction in elementary mathematics education.
