  • A method for the free network adjustment is proposed, based on the application of generalized inverse matrix (g-inverse). If the network adjustment is executed according to the solution with parameters, especially when all coordinates are considered as parameters to keep unity strength, the matrix of normal equation will be singular. This paper discusses the problem of singular matrix and the analysis of accuracy between conventional method and the free network adjustment of trilateration. In case of the adjustment, the RMS errors of adjusted X, Y coordinates are increased to 35.6% in a polygon, central-point figure, and 50.5% in a quadrilateral. In the elements of error ellipse, the RMS errors are decreased by $\pm$24.5% (a) and $\pm$5.0 % (b) in the polygon, $\pm$42.6% (a) and $\pm$49.2% (b) in the quadrilateral. Introduction of free network adjustment, therefore, could be applied to improvement of relative accuracy in the horizontal positioning.

  • Camera image is very sensitive to illumination that result in difficulties for recognizing character. Also Camera captured document images have not only skew but also vignetting effect and geometric distortion. Vignetting effect make it difficult to separate characters from the document images. Geometric distortion, occurred by the mismatch of angle and center position between the document image and the camera, make the shape of characters to be distorted, so that the character recognition is more difficult than the case of using scanner. In this paper, we propose a method that can increase the performance of character recognition by correcting the geometric distortion of document images using a linear approximation which changes the quadrilateral region to the rectangle one. The proposed method also determine the quadrilateral transform region automatically, using the alignment of character lines and the skewed angles of characters located in the edges of each character line. Proposed method, therefore, can correct the geometric distortion without getting positional information from camera.

  • In this paper, it is aimed to design the teaching units 'Inquiry into the isoperimetric problem of triangle and quadrilateral' to give elementary gifted students experience of mathematization. For this purpose, the teacher and the class observer (researcher) made a discussion about the design of the teaching unit through the analysis of the class based on the thought processes appearing during the problem solving process of each group of students. The following is a summary of the discussions that can give educational implications. First, it is necessary to use mathematical materials to reduce students' cognitive gap. Second, it is necessary to deeply study the relationship between the concept of side, which is an attribute of the triangle, and the abstract concept of height, which is not an attribute of the triangle. Third, we need a low-level deductive logic to justify reasoning, starting from inductive reasoning. Finally, there is a need to examine conceptual images related to geometric figure.

  • This study aims to analyze the characteristics of students' understanding of artificial intelligence and mathematical concepts by developing and applying an artificial intelligence education program for mathematics convergence using robots. To this end, we analyzed the content standards of elementary artificial intelligence education to extract conceptual elements of artificial intelligence and identified mathematics achievement standards that can effectively integrate them. In particular, a five-session (15 classes in total) program was developed by selecting the units 'angle' and 'quadrilateral' suitable for utilizing the robot's movement and reorganizing the lesson to integrate the mathematics achievement standard with the artificial intelligence content elements. As a result of applying this to 22 fourth grade elementary school students over five months and analyzing the students' understanding revealed by topic of artificial intelligence content, the artificial intelligence education program for mathematics convergence using robots was helpful in students' understanding artificial intelligence principles and mathematical concepts. In addition, the use of robots was confirmed to improve students' understanding of artificial intelligence and mathematics as well as their participation in class by making them visually check a series of performing procedures.

  • In this paper, the numerical finite element formulations were derived for the linearized Navier-Stokes' equations with assumptions of two-dimensional incompressible, homogeneous viscous fluid field, and small oscillation and the FAMD (Fluid Added Mass and Damping) code was developed for practical applications calculating the fluid added mass and damping. In formulations, a fluid domain is discretized with C$\^$0/-type quadratic quadrilateral elements containing eight nodes using a mixed interpolation method, i.e., the interpolation function for the velocity variable is approximated by a quadratic function based on all eight nodal points and the interpolation function for the pressure variable is approximated by a linear function based on the four nodal points at vertices. Using the developed code, the various characteristics of the fluid added mass and damping are investigated for the concentric cylindrical shell and the actual hexagon arrays of the liquid metal reactor cores.

  • The finite element based lattice Boltzmann method (FELBM) has been developed to model complex fluid domain shapes, which is essential for studying fluid-structure interaction problems in commercial nuclear power systems, for example. The present study addresses a new finite element formulation of the lattice Boltzmann equation using a general weighted residual technique. Among the weighted residual formulations, the collocation method, Galerkin method, and method of moments are used for finite element based Lattice Boltzmann solutions. Different finite element geometries, such as triangular, quadrilateral, and general six-sided solids, were used in this work. Some examples using the FELBM are studied. The results were compared with both analytical and computational fluid dynamics solutions.

  • In this paper, the dynamic stress intensity factors of fracture mechanics are numerically computed in time domain using the FEM. For which the finite element formulations are derived applying the Galerkin method to the equations of motion in convolution integral as has been presented in the previous paper. To assure the strain fields of r$^{-1}$ 2/ singularity near the crack tip, the triangular quarter-point singular elements are imbedded in the finite element mesh discretized by the isoparametric quadratic quadrilateral elements. Two-dimensional problems of the elastodynamic fracture mechanics under the impact load are solved and compared with the existing numerical and analytical solutions, being shown that numerical results of good accuracy are obtained by the presented method.

  • In this paper, the procedure for deriving an infinite element that is compatible with the quadrilateral Q8 element is first summarized. Enhanced by a self mesh-expansion procedure for generating the impedance matrices of different frequencies for the region extending to infinity, the infinite element is used to simulate the far field of the soil-structure system. The structure considered here is of the box type and the soils are either homogeneous or resting on a bedrock. Using the finite/infinite element approach, a parametric study is conducted to investigate the effect of open and in-filled trenches in reducing the structural vibration caused by a train passing nearby, which is simulated as a harmonic line load. The key parameters that dominate the performance of wave barriers in reducing the structural vibrations are identified. The results presented herein serve as a useful guideline for the design of open and in-filled trenches concerning wave reduction.

  • This report deals with the process of the finite element computation and the design of the particular example tunnel (the double track section tunnel for Line 5, 7, 8 of Seoul Subway). The finite element calculations are performed with the program MISES 3 was developed from Austria which have been used in Eroupe. The principles of mechanic and mathematic analysis for the program MISES 3 are based on "The Finite Element Method -3rd Edition" by O.C zienkiewicz. The calculations are approximate analysis method divide continuum into quadrilateral element and calculate deformation and stress, according to the force equations at the node of the element. On the calculation of under excavation, this is a very convenient method and able to calculate compounded structure with tunnel lining and surrounding materials. Although calculated under the same factor and conditions, the result is not same solution, according to the shape of mesh. Therefore , it is important that we collect the construction results of NATM on the spot and by comparing the results of the finite element method with the surveying results review the validity of analysis model.sis model.

  • A variable-node-flat shell element designated as CLS which has variable mid-side nodes with drilling freedom has been presented in this paper. The shell element to be applied in finite element analysis has been developed by combining a membrane element named as CLM with drilling rotation d.o.f. and plate bending element. The combined shell element possess six degrees of freedom per node. By introducing the variable-node elements which have physical midside nodes, some difficulties associated with imposing displacement constraints on irregular nodes to enforce interelement compatibility in common adaptive h-refinement on quadrilateral mesh are easily overcome. Detailed numerical studies show the excellent performance of the new shell elements developed in this study.
