  • Effects of the existence of $CO_2$ gas and pH on the silica surface characteristics at silica/Pb(II) and sodium dodecyl sulfonate (SDS, $C_{12}H_{25}SO_3Na$) solution interface were studied. The hydrophobic characteristics of silica surface was delineated by contact angle measurement and surface force measurement using atomic force microscopy (AFM). In $CO_2$ free condition provided by purging $N_2$ gas, the contact angle of fused silica surface in $10^{-4}M$ Pb(II) and SDS solution increased greatly up to $90^{\circ}$ compared with $40^{\circ}$ in atmospheric condition. It was due to the precipitation of $PbCO_3$ in atmospheric condition. In $CO_2$ free condition the change of contact angle and adhesion force ($F_{ad}$) in AFM, affected by pH change, was similar to the distribution of $PbOH^+$ ion in speciation diagram corresponding to $10^{-4}M$ total Pb(II). Therefore, it was convinced that the $PbOH^+$ ion among Pb(II) species would be the main adsorbing type on silica surface. Both of contact angle measurement and surface force measurement using AFM showed that the Pb only treatment made the silica surface hydrophobic. However, it could not be explained theoretically by current knowledge, and required further study in atomic level to solve the problem.

  • This study aims to diachronically explore the women's movements in modern Japan by focusing on three key words, 'maternity,' 'suffrage,' and 'war,' in uncovering how these concepts relate to Japan as a state. In particular, this study sheds light on the policies toward women not from the perspective of the state, but rather from women's perspective and evaluates their expectations toward the 'state' thorough the activities of Fusae Ichikawa and $Raich{\bar{o}}$ Hiratsuka. Hiratsuka, who was devoted to establishing the 'state protection of maternity,' ended up casting away such expectations toward the state after the failure of the petition movement developed by the New Women's Association. On the other hand, Ichikawa, encouraged by the success of women's suffrage movement in the U.S., remained active in the petition movement in the hope of attaining female suffrage. Because of this, Ichikawa was more vulnerable to the requests by the national authorities for the cooperation in war efforts-event though most of her activities were contained within the redressing of everyday life issues. The expectations toward the 'state' was a principal driving force of women's movements in modern Japan, yet at the same time it was also the reason why-as purging of Ichikawa symbolizes-they came to be stigmatized with the promotion of invasive war.

  • According to the World Health Organization (WHO), air pollution is a typical health hazard, resulting in about 7 million premature deaths each year. Sulfur dioxide (SO2) is one of the major air pollutants, and the combustion process with sulfur-containing fuels generates it. Measuring SO2 generation in large combustion environments in real time and optimizing reduction facilities based on measured values are necessary to reduce the compound's presence. This paper describes the concentration measurement for SO2, a particulate matter precursor, using a wavelength modulation spectroscopy (WMS) of tunable diode laser absorption spectroscopy (TDLAS). This study employed a quantum cascade laser operating at 7.6 ㎛ as a light source. It demonstrated concentration measurement possibility using 64 multi-absorption lines between 7623.7 and 7626.0 nm. The experiments were conducted in a multi-pass cell with a total path length of 28 and 76 m at 1 atm, 296 K. The SO2 concentration was tested in two types: high concentration (1000 to 5000 ppm) and low concentration (10 ppm or less). Additionally, the effect of H2O interference in the atmosphere on the measurement of SO2 was confirmed by N2 purging the laser's path. The detection limit for SO2 was 3 ppm, and results were compared with the electronic chemical sensor and nondispersive infrared (NDIR) sensor.

  • Intense artificial selection has been imposed to Luzhong mutton sheep population in the past years. Improvements on growth and reproductive performance are two breeding goals in the present herd. Although some progresses were phenotypically observed possibly due to inbreeding induced by strong selection in terms of these traits, the genomic evaluation was poorly understood. Therefore, a high-density SNP array was used to characterize the pattern of runs of homozygosity (ROH), estimate inbreeding and inbreeding depressions on early growth performance and litter size based upon ROH, and scan positive selection signatures of recent population. Consequently, a low inbreeding level was observed which had negative effects on litter size, but not on early growth performance. And 160 genes were under selection, of which some were reported to be linked to several traits of sheep including body weight, litter size, carcass and meat quality, milk yield and composition, fiber quality and health, and the top genes were associated with growth (growth hormone [GH]- growth hormone receptor [GHR]- Insulin-like growth factor 1 [IGF1] axis) and litter size (bone morphogenic proteins [BMPs]-associated). The effectiveness of previous breeding measures was highlighted, but purging selection was proposed to alleviate the inbreeding depression on litter size, providing some genomic insights to breeding management of Luzhong mutton sheep.

  • TOC, which can measure more than 90% of organic substances, can be measured quickly and easily, replacing BOD and COD, which were indicators of organic pollutants. According to water quality pollution control standards, when measuring TOC, if the inorganic carbon ratio in the sample is over 50%, the NPOC (Non-Purgeable Organic Carbon) method should be used. If volatile organic compounds (VOCs) are present at a certain concentration, the TC-IC (subtracting inorganic carbon from total carbon) method should be used. To validate the limitations of these analytical conditions, experiments were conducted by varying the ratio of TOC to IC in purified water and measuring the concentration of TOC in test solutions. The results showed no significant difference between the TC-IC method and the NPOC method. When measuring samples with added VOC standard solutions, it was observed that the carbon loss due to purging was not significant when using the NPOC method. Therefore, it is concluded that the choice of analytical method does not lead to significant differences when VOCs are present in the sample. To account for potential variations in results based on water quality pollution control standards and regulations regarding the approval and testing of environmental measurement devices, a comparison of field sample concentration values was made using two widely used types of TOC analyzers in Korea. The results showed variations of 0.02 to 0.83 mg/L between methods depending on the manufacturer, highlighting the need for caution when selecting an instrument.

Minimal inhibitory concentrations of water and ethanol-soluble extracts of Hwangyon(C. japonica), Omae(P. mume), and Omiza(S. chinensis) were determined and using thin-layer chromatography the extracts of Hwangyon and Omiza were separated. The results obtained were as follow : 1. The water-soluble extracts of Keumeunhwa(L. japonica), Chiza(G. jasminoides), Hwangyon(C. japonica), Dansam(S. miltiorrhiza), Omae(P. mume) and Omiza(S. chinensis) showed antibacterial activities against P. vulgaris ; among them, the extracts of Hwangyon, Omae, and Omiza showed high antibacterial activities. The water-soluble extracts of Keumeunhwa(L. japonica), Hwangyon(C. japonica), Hwangkeum(S. baicalensis), Hwangbaek(P. amurense), Dansam(S. miltiorrhiza), Daehwang(R. coreanum), Omae(P. mume), Omiza(S. chinensis), Gingseng(P. ginseng), and Gamcho(G. uralensis) showed antibacterial activities against S. aureus : among them, the extracts of Hwangyon and Omiza showed high antibacterial activities. The water-soluble extracts of Banggi(C. trilobus), Daehwang(R. coreanum), Omae(P. mume), Omiza(S. chinensis), and Gamcho(G. uralensis) inhibited the cell growth of E. faecalis : among them, Omae and Omiza showed high antibacterial activities. The extract of Hwangyon(C. Japonica) and Omae(P. mume) showed no inhibition against E. coli. However, the extract of Omiza(S. chinensis) inhibited cell growth of both E. coli and B. subtilis. 2. The water- and ethanol-soluble extract of Hwangyon(C. Japonica) showed antibacterial activities against P. vulgaris and S. aureus, those of Omae(P. mume) against P. vulgaris and E. faecalis, and those of Omiza(S. chinensis) against all species tested, P. vulgaris, S. aureus, and E. faecalis. With the exception that ethanol-soluble extract of Hwangyon(C. japonica) showed much higher antibacterial activity against S. aureus than water-soluble one, antibacterial activities of both water-and ethanol-soluble ones were similar to each other of other two medicinal herbs. 3. When the prescribed herb medicines were tested, Sambohwan showed antibacterial activities against P. vulgaris and S. aureus. No prescribed herb medicine inhibitied the cell growth of E. faecalis. 4. Minimal inhibitory concentrations(MICs) of both water- and ethanol-soluble extracts of Hwangyon(C. japonica), Omae(P. mume), and Omiza(S. chinensis) against P. vulgaris were $2.5mg/m{\ell}$, $10mm{\ell}$, and $20mg/m{\ell}$, respectively. Those of both Hwangyon(C. japonica) and Omiza(S. chinensis) against S. aureus were $1.25mg/m{\ell}$ and $10mg/m{\ell}$, respectively. MICs of water-soluble extracts of Omae(P. mume) and Omiza(S. chinensis) against E. faecalis were $2.5m{\ell}$ and $5m{\ell}$, and those of ethanol-soluble extracts were $5m{\ell}$ and $10m{\ell}$, respectively Except for those of E. faecalis the cell growth of P. vulgaris and S. aureus were inhibited by much lower concentration of ethanol-soluble extracts used. As a result, the antibacterial compounds against P. vulgaris S. aureus, and E. aecalis are contained in the extracts of Hwangyon(C. japonica), Omae(P. mume), Omiza(S. chinensis), the prescribed herb medicine, Sambohwan, and might be used for treatment of puerperal infection. Further study should be carried out to identify which compounds affect the cell growth inhibition of P. vulgaris S. aureus, and E. faecalis.

  • The various oriental herbal medicines, which have usually been used for treatment of reducing fever, purging intense heat and detoxication, were screened to determine the antibacterial activity and the minimal inhibitory concentration against pulmonary disease-causing Klebsiella pneumoniae, Streptococcus pyogenes, and Streptococcus pneumoniae. The results obtained were as follows: 1. Among the 23 oriental medicines tested, the water-soluble extracts of Coptis japonica, Scutellaria baicalensis and Picrorrhiza kurrooa showed the antibacterial activity against K.pneumoniae and that of C. japonica against S. pyogenes. The antibacterial activities of C. japonica, Prunusmume, Schizandra chinesis, Scutellaria baicalensis were also found against S.pneumoniae. When C.japonica was used, the high antibacterial activity was shown against Bacillus subtilis and other extracts showed a little activity against B. subtilis and E. coli as a control. 2. The ethanol-soluble extracts of Patrinia scabriosaefolia, P. mume, S. baicalensis, S. chinesis showed the antibacterial activity against K. pneumoniae and those of S. baicalensis, C. japonica, S. chinesis, P. mume agaist S. pyogenes and S. pnuemoniae. However, those extract showed a little antibacterial activity against B. subtilis and E. coli except for that the extract of C. japonica showed comparatively high growth inhibition of B. subtilis. 3. Among the medicinal herbs tested, the water and ethanol extrats of C. japonica showed very extcellent antibacterial activity against the pathogenic bacteria and controls. 4. When the water-soluble extracts of C. japonica and S. baicalensis, minimal inhibitory concentrations (MICs) against K. pneumoniae were $10mg/m{\ell}$ and $22 mg/m{\ell}$, respectively. The MICs of the ethanol-soluble extracts of P. mume and P. scabriosaefolia were $5mg/m{\ell}$ and $20mg/m{\ell}$, respectively. 5. • Purpose: For clinical application of beta-emitter labeled antibody, high specific activity is imporiant. Carrier-free $^{188}Re$ from $^{188}W/^{188}Re$ generator is an ideal radionuclide for this purpose. However, low stability of $^{188}Re$ labeled antibody, especially in high specific activity, due to radiolytic decomposition by high energy (2.1 MeV) beta ray was problem. We studied the stability of $^{188}Re$ labeled antibody, and stabilizing effect of several stabilizers. Materials and Methods: Pre-reduced monoclonal antibody (CEA79.4) was labeled with $^{188}Re$ by incubating with generator-eluted $^{188}Re-perrhenate$ in the presence of stannous tartrate for 2 hr at room temperature. Radiochemical purity of each preparation was determined by chromatography. Human serum albumin was added to the labeled antibodies (2%). Stability of $^{188}Re-CEA79.4$ was investigated in the presence of ascorbic acid, ethanol, of Tween 80 as stabilizing agents. Results: Labeling efficiencies were $88{\pm}4%\;(n=12)$. Specific activities of $1.25{\sim}4.77MBq/{\mu}g$ were obtained. If stored after purging with $N_2$, all the preparations were stable for 10 hr. However, stability decreased in the presence of air. Perrhenate and $^{188}Re-tartrate$ was major impurity in declined preparation. colloid-formation was not a significant problem in all cases. Addition of ascorbic acid stabilized the labeled antibodies either under $N_2$ or under air by reducing the formation of perrhenate. Conclusion: High specific activity $^{188}Re$ labeled antibody is unstable, especially, in the presence of oxygen. Addition of ascorbic acid increased the stability.
