  • In this paper, a non-conforming 3-D 8-node solid element(MQM10) has beets applied to the analyses of static and dynamic bending problems of laminated composite plates The QM10 element exhibits stiffer bending stiffness which is caused by the reduction of degree of freedom from Q11 element. As an effective way to correct the relative stiffness stiffening phenomenon the modification of Gauss sampling points for composite plates is proposed. The quantity of modification is a function of material properties. Also, another two modified equations are obtained, one is modification for stress, and the other is modification of coefficient of shear modulus in free vibration. It is noted that MQM10 element can analyse the static and free vibration problems of various 3-dimensional composite plates composed of unidirectional laminae, woven laminae or braided laminae. The results of MQM10 element are in good agreement with those of 20-node element.

  • Ejector system is one of fluid machinery which can entrain the fluid in low pressure part and transport it to the higher pressure part. The ejector system has been widely used for the purpose of obtaining high-vacuum state, fluid transport, thrust augmentation, etc. It can transport a large capacity of fluid with relatively small device of no any moving parts, and thus seldom causes mechanical troubles. However, the conventional ejector system has been pointed out that its overall efficiency is quite low compared with other fluid machinery since it is derived by only the pure shear stresses. In the present study, 4, 6, and 8 lobed petal nozzles with a design Mach number of 1.7 are adopted as a primary nozzle to improve the ejector performance, and are compared with a conventional circular nozzle. The static pressures along the diffuser wall are measured to qualify the flow field inside the supersonic petal ejector system.

  • Prestressing is the most commonly employed technique in bridges and long span beams in commercial buildings as prestressing results in slender section with higher load carrying capacities. This work is an attempt to study the performance of a minimum weight prestressed concrete beam adopting a non-prismatic section so that there will be a reduction in the volume of concrete which in turn reduces the self-weight of the structure. The effect of adopting a non-prismatic section on parameters like prestressing force, area of prestressing steel, bending stresses, shear stresses and percentage loss of prestress are established theoretically. The analysis of non-prismatic prestressed beams is based on the assumption of pure bending theory. Equations are derived for dead load bending moment, eccentricity, and depth at any required section. Based on these equations an algorithm is developed which does the stress checks for the given section for every 500 mm interval of the span. Limit state method is used for the design of beam and finite difference method is used for finding out the deflection of a non-prismatic beam. All the parameters of nonprismatic prestressed concrete beams are compared with that of the rectangular prestressed concrete members and observed that minimum weight design and economical design are not same. Minimum weight design results in the increase in required area of prestressing steel.

  • Air springs are prevalently used as suspension in train. However, air springs are seldom used in automobiles where they improve stability and comfort by enhancing the impact-relief, breaking, and cornering performance. Thus, this study proposed a new method to analyze air springs and obtained some reliable design parameter which can be utilized in vehicle suspension system in contrast to conventional method. Among air spring types of suspension, this study focused on sleeve type of air spring as an analysis model since it has potential for ameliorating the quality of automobiles, specifically in its stability and comfort improvement by decreasing the shock through rubber sleeve. As a methodology, this study used MARC, as a nonlinear finite element analysis program, in order to find out maximum stress and maximum strain depending on reinforcement cord's angle variation in sleeves. The properties were found through uniaxial tension and pure shear test, and they were developed using Ogden Foam which is an input program of MARC. As a result, the internal maximum stresses and deformation according to the changes of cord angle are obtained. Also, the results showed that the Young's modulus becomes smaller, then maximum stresses decrease. It is believed that these studies can be contributed in automobile suspension system.

  • Results of flat plate compressible boundary layer calculation, based on discrete formulation of DSMC method, are presented in low Mach number and low Knudsen number range. The free stream is a uniform flow of pure nitrogen at various Mach numbers in low pressures (i.e. rarefied gas). Complete thermal accommodation and diffuse molecular reflections are used as the wall boundary condition, replacing unreal no-slip condition used in continuum calculations. In the discrete formulation of DSMC method, there is no need to use ad hoc assumptions on transport properties like viscosity and thermal conductivity, instead viscosity is calculated from values of other field variables (velocity and shear stress). Also the results are compared with existing self-similar continuum solutions. In all Mach number cases computed, velocity slip is most pronounced in regions near the leading edge where continuum formulation renders the solution singular. As the boundary layer develops further downstream, velocity slips asymptote to values that are between 10 to 20% of the magnitude of free stream velocity. When the free stream number density is reduced, so the gas more rarefied, the velocity slip increases as expected.

  • A ejector system is one of the fluid machinery, which has been mainly used as an exhaust pump or a vacuum pump. The ejector system has often been pointed out to have only a limited efficiency because it is driven by pure shear action and the mixing action between primary and secondary streams. In the present work, numerical simulations were conducted to investigate the effects of the geometry and the mass flow ratio of supersonic ejector-diffuser systems on their mixing performance. A fully implicit finite volume scheme was applied to solve the axisymmetric Navier-Stokes equations, and the standard ${\kappa}-{\varepsilon}$ turbulence model was used to close the governing equations. The flow fields of the supersonic ejector-diffuser systems were investigated by changing the ejector throat area ratio and the mass flow ratio. The existence of the second throat strongly affected the shock wave structure inside the mixing tube as well as the spreading of the under-expanded jet discharging from the primary nozzle, and served to enhance the mixing performance.

  • Turbocharger bearings are under the circumstance of high temperature, moreover rotated at high speed. It is necessary to be designed overcoming the high temperature. So the type of oil inlet port, the inlet oil temperature and the sort of engine oil should be designed, controlled and selected carefully in order to reduce the bearing inside temperature. In this study, the influence of aerated oil on a high-speed journal bearing is also examined by using the classical thermohydrodynamic lubrication theory coupled with analytical models for viscosity and density of air-oil mixture in fluid-film bearing. Convection to the walls and mixing with supply oil and re-circulating oil are considered. The considered parameters for the study of bubbly lubrication are oil inlet port's type, oil aeration level and shaft speed. It is found that the type of oil inlet ports and shaft speed play important roles in determining the temperature and pressure, then the friction and load of journal bearing at high speed operation. Also, the results show that, under extremely high shaft speed, the high shear effects on aerated oil and the high temperature effects are canceled out each other. So, the bearing load and friction show almost no difference between the aerated oil and pure oil.

  • Equilibrium molecular dynamics simulations in a canonical ensemble are performed to evaluate the transport coefficients of several Lennard-Jones (LJ) mixtures at a liquid argon states of 94.4 K and 1 atm via modified Green-Kubo formulas. Two component mixture of A and B is built by considering the interaction between A and A as the attractive (A) potential, that between A and B as the attractive potential (A), and that between B and B as the repulsive potential (R), labelled as AAR mixture. Three more mixtures - ARA, ARR, and RAR are created in the same way. The behavior of the LJ energy and the transport properties for all the mixtures is easily understood in terms of the portion of attractive potential (A %). The behavior of the thermal conductivities by the translational energy transport due to molecular motion exactly coincides with that of diffusion constant while that of the thermal conductivities by the potential energy transport due to molecular motion is easily understood from the fact that the LJ energy of AAR, ARR, and RAR mixtures increases negatively with the increase of A % from that of the pure repulsive system while that of ARA changes rarely.

  • In particle or short-fiber reinforced composites, cracking of reinforcements is a significant damage mode because the cracked reinforcements lose carrying capacity. This paper deals with elastic stress distributions and load carrying capacity of intact and cracked ellipsoidal inhomogeneities. Three dimensional finite element analysis has been carried out on intact and cracked ellipsoidal inhomogeneities in an infinite body under uniaxial tension and pure shear. For the intact inhomogeneity, as well known as Eshelbys solution, the stress distribution is uniform in the inhomogeneity and nonuniform in the surrounding matrix. On the other hand, for the cracked inhomogeneity, the stress in the region near the crack surface is considerably released and the stress distribution becomes more complex. The average stress in the inhomogeneity represents its load carrying capacity, and the difference between the average stresses of the intact and cracked inhomogeneities indicates the loss of load carrying capacity due to cracking damage. The load carrying capacity of the cracked inhomogeneity is expressed in to cracking damage. The load carrying capacity of the cracked inhomogeneity is expressed in terms of the average stress of the intact inhomogeneity and some coefficients. It is found that a cracked inhomogeneity with high aspect ratio still maintains higher load carrying capacity.
