  • A comprehensive study on daily pupal weight loss due to histolysis and histgenesis in Bombyx mori Linn., has been undertaken. The percentag of pupal weight loss in the male pupa is higher than the female, conforming that the female pupa require more energy in the form of less pupal weight loss for ovipositional activities. The regression equation clearly shows higher percentage loss of daily pupal weight in male than female with respect to age and, this is also evident from the slope of the regression line. Moreover, analysis of the coefficient of correlation shows that the weight loss of pupa is directly correlated with the age rather than climatic parameters under which the pupa dwells.

  • This study was conducted to determine the effect of pupal development and adult longevity of Spodoptera litura larvae reared on leaves of different leguminos plants of 11 varieties or cultivars. Pupal duration varied from 8.7 to 9.5 days depending upon different diets and duration of female pupa (8.3~9.1 days) was about 1 day shorter than that of male's (9.4~10.1 days). Prepupal an postpupal duration were 1.7 to 2.0 days and 6.7 to 7.7 days, respectively. Pupal weight ranged from 0.23g to 0.43g for female and 0.24g to 0.35 g for male. Percent change of pupal weight was lowest (11%) on geomjeongkong-1 and highest (16%) on bukwangkong. Adult longevity was in ranging from 7.8 days on dongbu to 11.2 days on bukwangkong and tended to become slightly longer in female than tin male. Significant relationships were recognized between moisture content of feeding leaf, the pupal duration and weight and adult longevity.

  • This study was planned to find out the effects of several food-plants on the pupal weight and the number of eggs in the ovary of the fall webworm, Hyphantria cunea $D_{RURY}$. The larvae were separately reared on different food-plants in the Petri dish. Four to six day old pupae were used for the study of the pupal weight. The number of eggs in the ovary was counted under the binocular dissecting microscope. The loaves of the food-plants were sampled on Juiy 16, and analyzed by Kjeldahl method for the determination of total nitrogen content. The results obtained in this study were as follows; (1) The pupal weights were highly different according to the species of plants and sexes. The greatest pupal weight found in the pupae reared on the mulberry and the least one in the pupae reared on the apple tree. The weight female pupae was greater than that of male pupae in every case. (2) The number of eggs in the ovary was positively correlated to the pupal weight. (3) The nitrogen content of the food-plants used in this experiment was varied with the species of the plants. However, the nitrogen content of the food-plants was not significantly correlated to the pupal weight and the number eggs in the ovary.

  • To know the impact of female pupal weight corresponding to the male cocoon shell weight upon fecundity, hatchability and percentage of non-viable eggs, the experimental multivoltine breeds namely BL67 and 96A were categorised into low, medium and high batches according to the weight of female pupae and male cocoon shells and moths emerged from low, medium and high female pupae were allowed to mate withmoths emerged from low, medium and high male cocoon shells. Both the experimental breeds of BL67 and 96A revealed a fairl trend in fecundity for high batch > medium batch > low batch. When data were statistically analysed, a significant (p < 0.05) and a highly significant (p < 0.01) increase in fecundity was observed in the medium and high batches of BL67 during November - December, 2002 whereas highly significant (p < 0.01) increase was observed in the high batches of 96A during November - December, 2002. Data revealed a highly significant (p < 0.01) increase in fecundity in medium and high batches of both the breeds during January - February, 2003. More interestingly, a significant (p < 0.05) reduction was noted in percentage of non-viable eggs in high batches of 96A during January - February, 2003. But no significant variation in hatchability was noticed due to the effect of differential female pupal weight and male cocoon shell weight.

  • Two different feed(bran and swine feed) effect was tested on development of Tenebrio molitor at $25{\pm}5^{\circ}C$, $65{\pm}10%RH$. There was no significant feed effect on larval developmental periods(80.0 ~ 83.7 days), pupal length (18.1 ~ 18.7 mm) and fecundity(44.3 ~ 55.3 eggs) during first two days. However, fecundity was significantly affected by the pupal weight(P < 0.05), such that the number of eggs 172.3, 191.2, 215.0 gradually increased as pupal weight rose from 0.12 g, 0.15 g to 0.18 g, respectively. During the first two weeks of oviposition was 51.8%, which gradually decreased for further days. Longevity was $27.1{\pm}6.9$, $30.1{\pm}7.8$, $27.4{\pm}8.5$ days with increasing pupal weight of 0.12, 0.15, 0.18 g, respectively. Larval densities of 100, 300, 500 and 700 individuals reared in the container ($16{\times}21.5{\times}7cm$) resulted 67.9% of the T. molitor pupation during first three weeks. Pupal weight was decreased $146.9{\pm}6.5$, $142.1{\pm}8.3$, $122.0{\pm}9.6$, $118.5{\pm}5.2mg$ when it was reared at different larval densities of 100, 300, 500 and 700 individuals, respectively in size of($16{\times}21.5{\times}7cm$) rearing container.

  • In order to eradicate harmful insect by use of sterile male techniques, it is necessary to disperse about 10 times as many male insect as in wild condition. However, it is so difficult to discriminate male insect in pupal stage that usually the population are likely to be contaminated by female insect when that are released in field. The present study was conducted to establish a useful method capable of differenciating the male pupae of Stomawys calcitsans by means of measuring the pupal weight and length. The results were summarized as follows; 1. Male pupa was lighter and shorter than female and high correlation existed between length and width of pupa. 2. There was significant relationship between the length of pupa and width of adult 3. When the pupal sex of stable ay was identified by median of mean length and mean weight of the pupae, the Ratio of female to male was 1 : 1. 4 and 1 : 2. 2, respectively. Therefore, median of pupal weight seemed to be applicable for obtaining more number of male pupae.

  • In the experiment, gene actions were analyzed for seven silkworm varieties in order to obtain basic information on their genetic improvement by diallel crosses. The results obtained were summarized as follows : in analysis of variance, significantly maternal and reciprocal effects were observed for all character except female cocoon shell percentage and female pupal weight. Over-dominance was shown by Vr-Wr graphic analysis in three characters such as female cocoon weight, female and male pupal weight, and partial dominance in five characters such as male cocoon weight, cocoon shell percentage in both female and male. Component of genetic varience analyzed for five characters such as male cocoon weight, cocoon shell weight, cocoon shell percentage in both female and male showed that additive effects were higher than dominant effects, and female cocoon weight showed dominant effects higher than additive effects. Heritability of narrow sence was higher more than 0.51 and heritability of broad sence was higher more than 0.77 in all characters except for female pupal weight. The directions of dominance were negative for female cocoon shell weight and somewhat higher for female and male cocoon shell percentage. Meanwhile cocoon weight, pupal weight in both female and male showed positive in the direction of dominance.

  • The Larval critical weight is the minimal mass at which further growth in not necessary for a normal time course to pupation. Larval critical weight (Lcw), pupal critical weight (Pcw) and adult critical weight (Acw) of different breeds of Bombyx mori L. were determined through starvation (food deprivation). The Lcw was found to be about 938.46, 2397.26, 2283.57 and 2220.97 mg in males and 1118.15, 2681.04, 2604.9 and 2455.88 mg in females of the multivoltine breed (Nistari), Bivoltine breeds (P5 & NB18) and their hybrid (P5$\times$NB18) respectively. Bivoltine breed P5 took more time (3.35 days) followed by NB18 (3.13 days) & P5$\times$NB18 (3.02 days) to attain larval critical weight (In $5^{th}$ Instar) than the multivoltine breed Nistari (2.42 days). Decrease in weight from larval maximal weight to pupal weight and to adult weight was also observed more in multivoltine than bivoltines, which may be due to more latent feeding period in bivoltines. Since Lcw is a stable character and independent of environment, it could be utilized for characterization of silkworm breeds to assess the quality of an insect.

  • To produce F1 hybrid of silkworm sex discrimination has to be followed at the pupal stage by sexual organ. However it requires a lot of labour and may bring about a wrong classification. In these regards, this study has been implemented to find out an effective measure for the pupal sex discrimination by use of variation of cocoon weight and image analysis of cocoon. As a result, it was found that in case of the pupal weight the percentage of a wrong classification fell on 0.3% and in case of single cocoon weight 0.4%. The discrimination rate was 99% in the weight variables of cocoon but analysis by single cocoon weight and cocoon shape variables, it was 98.7%. Efficiency of discrimination was increased by 2.7% as compared to variable of single cocoon weight. The minimum cocoon sampling size may be 15 cocoons sexual-wise.
