The failure modes of steel column-base plate connection arranged on the basis of AISC Design Guide-#1 and -#10 are base plate tension and compression side flexural yielding, yielding, pull-out and shear failure of anchor rod, concrete crushing in concrete footing and steel column yielding. The bending moment capacity and failure mode in this connection are predicted using limit-state function and we compare these results and test result. In the case that thickness of base plate is relatively thick, bending moment capacity and failure mode in steel column-base plate connection accurately predicted. But in the case that thickness of base plate is relatively thin and axial force do not exist, prediction of failure mode in this connection is somewhat inaccurate.
This work presents an experiment study to evaluate the nanoparticle adhesion and surface hydrophobicity characteristics of Teflon-polyurethane top coat depending on the number of multi-wall carbon nanotube (MWCNT) coatings, which is a carbon-based hydrophobic particle. In order to measure the adhesion between the nanoparticles and the top coat, adhesion pull-off test was performed with different MWCNT oxidation times. Static contact angle and roughness measurements were carried out to characterize the surface hydrophobic behavior. Through the roughness evaluation, it was confirmed that the carbon nanotubes were wetted in the Teflon-polyurethane top coat, and the degree carbon nanotube wetting was confirmed through a USB-microscope. As a result, it was found that the larger the degree of wetting, the better the adhesion. From the experimental results, as the hydrophobicity of Teflon-polyurethane increased, the adhesive propertydecreased with the number of coatings. It was possible to improve the adhesive force and determine the number of coatings of carbon nanotubes with optimized hydrophobicity.
For initial stability of the tunnel, the primary support, Shotcrete and rockbolt shall be placed in the most appropriate time. This is because the role of such support plays a vital role in long-term and short-term tunnel stability. In this study, the rock bolt is an important supporting system that receives the external pressure generated by the stress relaxation during tunnel excavation as axial force and transmits it to the shotcrete on the tunnel excavation surface. Until now, most of the materials of rock bolts have been used in the field, but there have been many problems such as uncertain quality of Chinese materials entering the market, poor packing due to falling down of rock bolts when filled with mortar, and corrosion due to water. Therefore, in this study, we have developed a high strength steel pipe rock bolt using Autobeam material to solve and improve various problems of existing rock bolts. In order to evaluate the performance of the developed bolt, field tests were carried out and the existing mortar filler in order to improve the performance of the rock bolt, the design and construction criteria were studied and the results were included in this paper.
Shear Connector should be used to fix the PHC pile with extension wall in order to utilize PHC-W retaining wall as permanent wall. The pullout behaviours on shear connectors anchored into PHC-W pile were observed as two modes. The first type behaviour showed that after reaching the maximum pullout resistance, the anchorage was broken and shear connector was pulled out abruptly. The second type behaviour showed that even after arriving the maximum pullout resistance, the anchorage was not destroyed and there was a progressive increase in pullout displacement. The maximum pullout resistance of the steel anchor shear connector is larger than that of deformed bar shear connector. The larger the diameter and the longer the embedment length of shear connector, the higher the maximum pullout resistance would be. The pullout displacements corresponding to the maximum pullout resistance of the shear connector showed various ranges regardless of the materials, the diameters and the anchoring lengths. A-D20 shear connectors showed a pull-out displacement of about 8~10 mm. A-D16, D-D19 and D-D16 shear connectors exhibited a pulling displacement of about 14~20 mm, but a pulling displacement of about 6~10 mm when the anchoring lengths were 50 and 80 mm.
Purpose: In arthroscopic rotator cuff repairs there are generally weak link in tendon suture interface, arthroscopic rotator cuff repairs can have higher retear rates than open repairs. The purpose of this study was to compare the strength of UU (Ulsan University) suture than open modified MA (Mason-Allen) suture when suture anchored into bone. Materials and Methods: The human supraspinatus tendons were harvested from the shoulder of the cadaver and split in 2 times, producing four tendons per one shoulder, for a total of 24 specimens. Two suture configurations (UU, MA) were randomized and checked on each set of tendons. Specimens were cyclically loaded under force control between 5 and 30 N at 0.25 Hz for fifty cycles. Each specimen was loaded to failure under displacement control at 1 mm/sec. Cyclic elongation, peak to peak displacement, stiffness, ultimate tensile load, mode of failure were checked. Results: No significant difference was found between two suture configuration with respect to peak to peak displacement, cyclic elongation, and stiffness. With regard to ultimate failure load, there were no significant difference statistically between the UU suture and modified MA suture (109.4 N, 110.6 N). The most common mode of failure between both sutures was suture pull-out through the tendon. Conclusion: The UU suture and modified MA suture produced similar biomechanical properties.
To construct an ideal geosynthetic reinforced soil retaining wall (GRS-RW), the facing of the wall should be flexible enough to accommodate a large deformation of the supporting ground and to develop the large tensile force in reinforcements during wall construction as long as the stability is ensured, but should be rigid enough to be stiff and stable as well as durable and aesthetically acceptable for a long life time when the wall is in service. Facing conditions during the construction and service of the wall are quite different. So it is difficult to be satisfied all these conditions with the current construction method which is mainly used in reinforced wall construction in Korea. Most of this contradiction could be solved by the staged construction procedure. According to the results of cases and references analyses, stage construction procedures make it possible to accommodate large deformation of the supporting ground and backfill without losing the stability of the wall, and to derive the tensile strength of reinforcement causing deformation of the facing. When the facing is a full-height rigid one, it also appeared almost impossible to occur a local shear failure of the active zone, and pull-out failure of reinforcements. Therefore, GRS-RWs having a full-height rigid facing have been constructed by the staged construction procedures that matched well with the theory of reinforced soil, which had outstanding stability and durability, and thus could be used for railways and bridge abutments in Korea in the future.
The superiority of bearing ground anchor system has been recognized for the stability and economical efficiency since 1950s in Japan, Europe and etc. The ground anchor introduced in Korea, however, has the structural problem that the tensile strength comes only from the ground frictional force caused by the expansion of the wedge body and it is impossible to evaluate the bearing resistance because the adhering method of the anchor body to hollow wall is not appropriate. In this study, the underreamed ground anchor system was developed so that the bearing pressure of ground anchor can exert as much as possible. And the in-situ tests were performed to evaluate the pullout behavior characteristics and to verify the decreasing effect of the bonded length. The pullout tests were performed with the non-grouted tension condition and grouted tension condition in order to identify the pull-out resistance of each conditions. In addition, it was compared with the results of friction anchor. Finally, the numerical analysis was fulfilled to verify the bearing effect at the bonded part through the detailed modeling by PLAXIS-2D, which is general finite element method analysis program.
Steel tire cords were subjected to plasma polymerization coating of acetylene in order to enhance the adhesion to rubber compounds. Plasma polymerization coating was varied to plasma polymerization coating of acetylene, argon plasma etching+plasma polymerization, or argon plasma. etching+plasma polymerization with Ar carrier gas. Adhesion was evaluated via TCAT samples and compared to those with brass coated tire cord. For durability study, plasma polymer cooled tire cords were aged in lab atmosphere for 1, 3, 5, 10 or 15 days, while TCAT specimens prepared with plasma polymer coated tire cords were aged in distilled water, 10% NaCl solution or
The wall shear stress in the vicinity of end-to end anastomoses under steady flow conditions was measured using a flush-mounted hot-film anemometer(FMHFA) probe. The experimental measurements were in good agreement with numerical results except in flow with low Reynolds numbers. The wall shear stress increased proximal to the anastomosis in flow from the Penrose tubing (simulating an artery) to the PTFE: graft. In flow from the PTFE graft to the Penrose tubing, low wall shear stress was observed distal to the anastomosis. Abnormal distributions of wall shear stress in the vicinity of the anastomosis, resulting from the compliance mismatch between the graft and the host artery, might be an important factor of ANFH formation and the graft failure. The present study suggests a correlation between regions of the low wall shear stress and the development of anastomotic neointimal fibrous hyperplasia(ANPH) in end-to-end anastomoses. 30523 T00401030523 ^x Air pressure decay(APD) rate and ultrafiltration rate(UFR) tests were performed on new and saline rinsed dialyzers as well as those roused in patients several times. C-DAK 4000 (Cordis Dow) and CF IS-11 (Baxter Travenol) reused dialyzers obtained from the dialysis clinic were used in the present study. The new dialyzers exhibited a relatively flat APD, whereas saline rinsed and reused dialyzers showed considerable amount of decay. C-DAH dialyzers had a larger APD(11.70
