  • A study has been made of the Korean bentonite aqueous suspension contrast with American bentonite by means of XRD IR swelling, gel formation and rheogram at various conditions such as concentration, temperature and pH. The Korean bentonite was identified as montmorillonite clay containig a small proprotion of crystoballite and mordenite, and its swelling power were acceptable for requirements of Korean pharmacopeia regulations though its values were not satisfied. Korean bentonite swelled to 10 times and American one did to 15 times compared to its bulkiness of powder. The rheogram of Korean bentonite suspension reveals bulged pseudoplatic flow with yield value at higher concentration and pseudoplastic flow without yield value at lower concentration. The higher the concentration, the greater were the apparent viscosity and hysteresis loop. Korean bentonite suspension showed insignificant temperature dependence on both apparent viscosity and hysteresis loop and it was more temperature dependent on viscosity but less on hysteresis loop than those of American sample. The pH dependence was so high on viscosity that apparent minimum value was near pH 7 and maximum value at pH 3 or 7. The hysteresis loop appeared minimum over the pH range 5-7 and maximum near pH 3 or 11. The Korean bentonite was inferior to the American bentonite in swelling volume, gel formation, thioxotropy, however, it would be possible to improve the quality of Korean bentonite by developing the method of purification for bentonite clay.

  • This paper presents optimal placement of minimal set of Phasor Measurement Units (PMU's) and observability analysis of the network with PMU's. In order to find a observable system, a symbolic method which directly assigns an appropriate symbol for measurement or pseudo-measurement to every entry of node-branch incidence matrix is proposed. It is much simpler and easier to analyze the observability of the network with PMU's than the conventional ones. For the optimal PMU placement problem, two approaches which are based on a modified Simulated-Annealing (SA) method and a Direct Combination method are proposed. Some case studies with IEEE sample system are made to show the performance of the proposed methods are almost alike and more effective than the conventional simulated-annealing method. It is also shown that the Direct Combination method is more effective than the modified simulated-annealing one in the sense of computation burden. The results of this study showed also that the accuracy of power system estimation and system observability can be improved the proposed PMU placements.

  • Local linear estimator has a number of advantages over the traditional kernel estimators. The better performance near boundaries is one of them. However, local linear estimator can produce erratic result in sparse regions in the realization of the design and to solve this problem much research has been done. Local linear quasi-likelihood estimator has many common properties with local linear estimator, and it turns out that sparse design can also lead local linear quasi-likelihood estimator to erratic behavior in practice. Several methods to solve this problem are proposed and their finite sample properties are compared by the simulation study.

  • In this study, zirconium fumarate of metal-organic framework (MOF-801) was solvothermally synthesized at 130 ℃ and characterized through powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD) analyses and porosity measurements from N2 sorption isotherms at 77 K. The ability of MOF-801 to act as an adsorbent for the phosphate removal from aqueous solutions at 25 ℃ was investigated. The phosphate removal efficiency (PRE) obtained by 0.05 g/L adsorbent dose at an initial phosphate concentration of 60 ppm after 3 h was 72.47%, whereas at 5 and 20 ppm, the PRE was determined to be 100% and 89.88%, respectively, after 30 min for the same adsorbent dose. Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) surface area and pore volume of the bare MOF-801 sample were 478.25 ㎡/g and 0.52 ㎤/g, respectively, whereas after phosphate adsorption (at an initial concentration of 60 ppm, 3 h), the BET surface area and pore volume were reduced to 331.66 ㎡/g and 0.39 ㎤/g, respectively. The experimental data of kinetic (measured at initial concentrations of 5, 20 and 60 ppm) and isotherm measurements followed the pseudo-second-order kinetic equation and the Freundlich isotherm model, respectively. This study demonstrates that MOF-801 is a promising material for the removal of phosphate from aqueous solutions.

  • A new precursor [$Zr(acac)_{3}(H_{2}O)_{2}$] was synthesized by Sonochemical technique and used to deposit thin $ZrO_{2}$ film on quartz and ceramic substrate via ultrasonic aerosol assisted chemical vapour deposition (UAACVD) at 300 ${^{\circ}C}$ in oxygen environment followed by annealing of the sample for 2-3 minutes at 500 ${^{\circ}C}$ in nitrogen ambient. The molecular structure of the precursor determined by single crystal X-ray analysis revealed that the molecules are linked through intermolecular hydrogen bonds forming pseudo six and eight membered rings. DSC and TGA/FTIR techniques were used to determine thermal behavior and decomposition temperature of the precursor and nature of evolved gas products. The optical measurement of annealed $ZrO_{2}$ film with tetragonal phase shows optical energy band gap of 5.01 eV. The particle size, morphology, surface structure and composition of deposited films were investigated by XRD, SEM and EDX.

  • Biosensor based on rugate PSi interferometer for the detection of avidin has been described. Rugate PSi fabricated by applying a computer-generated pseudo-sinusoidal current waveform has been prepared for the application as a label-free biosensor based on porous silicon interferometer. The fabrication, optical characterization, and surface derivatization of a rugate PSi has been described. The method to fabricate biotinderivatized rugate PSi has been investigated. The surface and cross sectional morphology of rugate PSi are obtained with SEM. FT-IR spectroscopy is used to characterize the oxidation and functionalization reaction of rugate PSi sample. Binding of the avidin into the biotin-derivatized rugate PSi induces a change in refractive index. A red-shift of reflectivity by 18 nm in the reflectivity spectrum is observed, when the biotin-modified rugate PSi was exposed to a flow of avidin.

  • Local linear regression estimator is the most widely used nonparametric regression estimator which has a number of advantages over the traditional kernel estimators. It is well known that local linear estimator can produce erratic result in sparse regions in the realization of the design and the interpolation method of Hall and Turlach (1997) is the very efficient way to resolve this problem. However, it has been never pointed out that Hall and Turlach's interpolation method is very sensitive to outliers. In this paper, we propose the robust version of the interpolation method for adapting to sparse design. The finite sample properties of the method is compared with Hall and Turlach's method by the simulation study.

  • It is common to analyze volatile organic compound (VOC) or semi-VOC (SVOC) in a sample composed of a complex matrix consisting of multiple components such as bloods through a separation process. Adsorption is a physical phenomenon in which certain components accumulate on the surface of other phases. In order to overcome difficulties in the pretreatment process, an adsorption is frequently used. Solid phase microextraction (SPME) equipment with porous carbon carboxen (CAR) is an example of adsorption application. In this study, the adsorption of 4-octylphenol to carboxen was examined. To do so, the extraction efficiency for such solvents as dichloromethane ($CH_2Cl_2$, DCM), ethylacetate ($CH_3COOC_2H_5$, EA) and diethylether ($C_2H_5OC_2H_5$, $Et_2O$) was studied and also the derivatization reaction for 4-octylphenol with reagents of bistrimethylsilyltrifluoroacetamide (BSTFA), methylchloroformate (MCF) and pentafluorobenzylbromide (PFBBr) was compared. The combination of DCM and BSTFA showed good performance thus they were adopted for this study. Thermodynamic adsorption experiments showed that the adsorption process was endothermic and Freundlich isotherm equation was more suitable than Langmuir isotherm. It was also found that the adsorption followed a pseudo-$2^{nd}$ order kinetic model.

  • An experimental study was conducted to test the applicability of natural hydraulic lime (NHL) as a reinforcing agent for the supporting layers of mural paintings in ancient tombs.Drawing upon preceding studies on mural paintings inancient tombs, samples of reinforcing agents for various conditions were prepared using NHL products, and pseudo-samples of the supporting layers of mural paintings were also produced. The samples were cured for 7, 28, and 84 days in a high-humidity condition similar to that of the mural-tomb environment. Physical properties such as dimensional stability and compressive strength were measured for each curing period. The results indicated that the NHL samples had a rapid curing speed and a low contraction ratio and are therefore suitable as reinforcing agents, whereas they showed a poor match in terms of strength compared to the supporting layer, and also low whiteness. The dimensional stability and compressive strength testsrevealedthat an NHL product mixed with a pseudo-sample of a supporting layer provided desirable conditions for reinforcing agent. The findings suggested that different conditions for curing time and strength should be considered for each supporting layer prior to applying NHL as a reinforcing agent for damaged mural paintings in ancient tombs.

  • Nonstoichiometric solid solutions of Sr$_{1+x}Er _{1-x} FeO _{4-y}$ system (x = 0.00, 0.25, 0.50, 0.75 and 1.00) with layered $K_2NiF_4$ type structure were prepared at 1350$^{\circ}$C under atmospheric pressure. By the analysis of X-ray diffraction, the crystallographic structures of the solid solution of all compositions were found to be pseudo-tetragonal system. Nonstoichiometric chemical formulas have been determined by Mohr salt analysis. It shows that the amount of Fe$^{4+}$ increases with increasing x up to 0.50 and then decreases, and the value of oxygen nonstoichiometry increases with increasing x value. Mixed valency states of Fe$^{3+}$ and Fe$^{4+}$ in the sample were identified again by Mossbauer spectroscopic analysis at 298 K. Electrical conductivity varied within the semiconductivity range of 10-2 ∼ 10-7(${\Omega}$-1cm-1), activation energy for electrical conduction decreased with the increment of the mole ratio of Fe$^{4+}$ or ${\tau}$ value. The conduction mechanism could be explained by the hopping model of the conduction electrons between the valency states of Fe$^{3+}$ and Fe$^{4+}$.
