  • A milky gray scum was observed at some water area of the lake Daecheong in the summer of 1997 and 1998. To identify a causing organism of scum and affecting factors, we observed the scum material by a phase contrast microscope and surveyed the phsico-chemical water quality during the outbreak of scum. The scum was found out to be clogging cysts of amoeboid protozoan, Asterocaelum sp.(Protozoea Sarcodina Aconchulinida), grazer of filamentous cyanobacteria, Anabaena genus. The protozoan scum appeared during Anabaena bloom period, which continued for a while. This protozoan was presumed acting as a regulator of Anabaena bloom in the lake Daecheong during the summer season. Moreover this is the first report on Asterocaelum sp. a grazing filamentous cyanobacteria occurred in Korean freshwater.

  • This study was undertaken to evaluate the status of intestinal protozoan infections in the children of specific groups. A total number of 441(male 250; female 191) consisting of 224 children of national feeble minded children institute, 59 Han-Bit blindness students, 158 children of local mental retardation children institute(Kang-Dong Ku) of specific groups were examined. The method employed was formalin-ether sedimentation technique with Lugol's iodine stain. The results were as follows: 1) The positive rates for any kinds of protozoan cysts were 13.8%(72 positives out of 441 samples) with sexual difference of 14.0% in male and 12.6% in female. 2) In the institute differences of positive rates of protozoan cysts were 15.2% in national feeble minded children institute, 16.9% in Han-Bit blindness school, and local mental retardation children institute(Kang-Dong Ku). 3) Cysts of Entamoeba coli were recovered in 8.6% and cysts of pathogenic amoeba, Entamoeba histolytica were found in 1.4%. Cysts of Endolimax nana (3.4%). Giardia lamblia (2.9%) were found in this study. 4) The degree of multiple infections of protozoan cysts were; single infection 81.4%, double infection 16.9% and quadriple infection 1.7% respectively.

  • Cochlosoma sp. infection was identified in a single case among 60 stunted diarrheic native turkey poults, Meleagris galopavo. A large number of the flagellated parasites was found free or within the intervillous spaces of the jejunum, ileum and cecum. Moderate enteritis was associated with the parasites. In TEM studies of the parasagittal sections of the parasite, a prominent ventral sucker like disc and flagella emerging from an opening on the ventrodorsal surface of the pyriform uninuclear parasite were found. The morphological characteristics of this protozoan match with those described for Cochlosoma anatis. The parasite could be considered as an intestinal pathogenic protozoan causing stunting and diarrhea in turkeys in Iran.

  • Members of the ciliate group of protozoans are often observed in mass cultures of rotifers. In particular, Euplotes and Vorticella are common contaminating species. In this study, I examined the effect of the ciliates Euplotes sp. and Vorticella sp. on the growth of the rotifer Brachionus rotundiformis by conducting inter-specific and tripartite-specific mixed-culture experiments. The growth of rotifers was suppressed in co-existence with Euplotes sp. compared with monocultures of rotifers. However, Vorticella sp. promoted rotifer growth. Moreover, Vorticella sp. improved the growth of rotifers suppressed by Euplotes sp. contaminants. In 5-L semi-mass cultures of rotifers, growth of the contaminating protozoan Euplotes sp. was heavily suppressed by Vorticella sp. The stable maintenance of the rotifer culture ecosystem can be achieved by manipulating the types of contaminating protozoan species.

  • This study investigated the effect of breast-feeding in protection against protozoan infection in infants with persistent diarrhea. Infants were classified into 2 groups; 161 breast-fed infants and the same number of non-breast-fed infants. Microscopic examinations of stool were done for detection of parasites and measuring the intensity of infection. Moreover, serum levels of IgE and TNF-${\alpha}$ were measured by ELISA. Cryptosporidium spp., Entamoeba histolytica/Entamoeba dispar, Giardia lamblia, and Blastocystis sp. were demonstrated in infants with persistent diarrhea. The percentage of protozoan infections was significantly lower in breast-fed infants than that in the non-breast-fed infants. The levels of IgE and TNF-${\alpha}$ were significantly lower in the breast-fed group than in the non-breast-fed group. There were significant positive associations between the serum levels of IgE and TNF-${\alpha}$ and the intensity of parasite infection in the breast-fed group. It is suggested that breast-feeding has an attenuating effect on the rate and intensity of parasite infection.

  • BALB/c mice infected with a high virulent strain of Trypanosoma brucei gambiense IL3707 were treated intraperitoneally (ip) with either Melarsoprol (Mel-B) or PSG(+) buffer as controls. The mice were subsequently monitored regularly for parasites by direct microscopic examination of their tail blood or buffy coat and by polymerase chain reaction (PCR). Mel-B was found to be an effective drug for treatment against T.b. gambiense because at the end of the first treatment schedule, all treated mice were negative for parasites even by PCR, while all the control animals were positive. Three of the five Mel-B treated mice, while parasitologically negative, were PCR positive between 53 and 80 days post infection (DPI), indicating that they still harbored an infection. All treated mice were subsequently negative for parasites even by PCR at 88 DPI. A combination of conventional microscopic examination and PCR offers a good prediction of cure following treatment of trypanosomosis.

  • The status of intestinal parasitic infections and seroprevalence of cystic echinococcosis in the inhabitants In Dornod and Selenge, Mongolia, was observed with stool and serum samples from 165 and 683 residents from August 9 to August 15, 2003. A total of 10 inhabitants (6.1%) were found to be infected with protozoan cysts or oocysts by stool examinations; 7, 1 and 2 cases with Entamoeba coli, Giardia lamblia and Cryptosporidium parvum, respectively. A total of 62 people (9.1 %) revealed significantly high levels of specific antibodies against Echinococcus granulosus by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). The surveyed areas are rural areas and the sanitized tab water is not available. There is a possibility of endemic transmission of water-borne protozoan diseases in these areas. The clinical echinococcosis is needed to be searched from the seropositive inhabitants.

  • This study was performed to observe the present status of intestinal parasitic infections among the children in Iksan, Jeonbuk, Korea. During the period from February to June 1996, total 510 fecal samples(male 276, female 234) were collected and examined by formalin-ether sedimentation technique and trichrome stain for intestinal helminths and protozoan cysts. Of 510 samples examined, 62(12.2%) were positive for intestinal parasites. Helminth egg positives were 3(0.6%), and protozoan cyst positives were 59(11.6%). The female group showed higher positive rate(13.2%) than males(11.2%), and the highest positive rates were observed in 7 age group(17.5%), and lowest positive rates were 4 age group(9.5%). 3 species of helminths egg and 6 species of protozoan cyst were detected; Metagonimus yokogawai 0.4%, Enterobius vermicularis 0.2%, Trichuris trichiura 0.2%, Endolimax nana 4.1%, Entamoeba coli 3.9%, Ciardia lamblia 2.0%, Entamoeba histolytica 1.4%, Iodamoeba butschilii 0.8%, and Chilomastix mesnili 0.4%, respectively. In 3 helminth egg positive cases, single infection was 2(66.7%), and double infection 1(33.3%), among 59 protozoan cyst positives, single infection was 54(91.5%), and double infection was 5(8.5%). The highest positive rate of protozoan cyst was 7 age group(14.3), and lowest positive rate was 4 age group(9.5%).
