Most applications of polymers involve blends and mixtures of components including solvents, surfactants, copolymers, fillers, organic or inorganic functional additives, and various processing aids. These components provide unique properties of polymeric materials even beyond those tailored into the basic chemical structures. In addition, skillful processing extends the properties for even greater applications. The perennial challenge of polymer science is to understand and exploit the structure-processing-property interplay relationship. We are developing and demonstrating combinatorial methods and high throughput analysis as tools to provide this fundamental understanding.

Low density polyethylene nanocomposites were prepared by melt intercalating maleic anhydride grafted polyethylene and montmorillonite clay. It has been found that maleic anhydride has promoted strong interactions between polyethylene and montmorillonite, leading to the homogeneous dispersion of clay layers. Rheological experiments revealed that prepared nanocomposites exhibited shear thinning behaviour. Polyethylene nanocomposites exhibited an increase in steady shear viscosities compared to virgin polyethylene owing to strong polymer clay interactions. The tensile strength of nanocomposites was improved but elongation at break decreased considerably. Also, barrier properties improved significantly with montmorillonite content.
Titanium is applied in various industries due to its valuable properties and abundant reserves. Generally, if a highly uniform oxide structure and a high-density oxide film is formed on the surface through anodization treatment, the utility value such as color appearance and corrosion inhibition efficiency is further increased. The objective of this study was to determine improvement of water-repellent property by controlling titanium oxide parameters such as pore size and inter-pore distance to improve corrosion resistance. Oxide film structures of different shapes were prepared by controlling the anodization processing time and voltage. These oxide structures were then analyzed using a Field Emission Scanning Electron Microscope (FE-SEM). Afterwards, a Self-Assembled Monolayer (SAM) coating was performed for the oxide structure. The contact angle was measured to determine the relationship between the shape of the oxide film and the water-repellency. The smaller the solid fraction of the surface, the higher the water-repellent effect. The surface with excellent hydrophobic properties showed improved corrosion resistance. Such water-repellent surface has various applications. It is not only useful for corrosion prevention, but also useful for self-cleaning. In addition, a hydrophobic titanium may open up a new world of biomaterials to remove bacteria from the surface.
A quantitative structure-property relationship (QSPR) study was performed for the prediction of the absorption maxima of azobenzene dyes. The entire set of 191 azobenzenes was divided into a training set of 150 azobenzenes and a test set of 41 azobenzenes according to Kennard and Stones algorithm. A seven-descriptor model, with squared correlation coefficient ($R^2$) of 0.8755 and standard error of estimation (s) of 14.476, was developed by applying stepwise multiple linear regression (MLR) analysis on the training set. The reliability of the proposed model was further illustrated using various evaluation techniques: leave-many-out crossvalidation procedure, randomization tests, and validation through the test set.

The production of light metal parts using aluminum is mainly performed by die casting and squeeze casting, which directly fabricate the required shape from the liquid state. However, die casting is subject to defects such as shrinkage porosity and air trapped when molten metal enters the cavity, whilst squeeze casting also has defects due to turbulent flow in the die cavity. Both diecasting and sqeeze casting have inhomogeneous mechanical property in terms of dendritic structure during solidification. Active research has been carried out on semi-solid processing, rather than on conventional process methods such as die casting, which involve various problems. Therefore in this paper, to introduce the fundamental technology for d e design, in die casting and forging process with semi-solid materials, relationship between stress and strain of semi-solid materials, and for producing parts die design has been proposed as parameters of globulization of the microstructure and gate shape. The prevention of various defects to produce sound parts are also introduced.
Yangon city is experienced a rapid urban expansion over the last two decades due to accelerate with the socioeconomic development. This research work studied an investigation into the application of the integration of the Remote Sensing (RS) and Geographic Information System (GIS) for observing Land Use and Land Cover (LULC) patterns and evaluate its impact on Land Surface Temperature (LST) of the downtown, suburban 1 and suburban 2 of Yangon city. The main purpose of this paper was to examine and analyze the variation of the spatial distribution property of the LULC of urban spatial information related with the LST and Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) using RS and GIS. This paper was observed on image processing of LULC classification, LST and NDVI were extracted from Landsat 8 Operational Land Imager (OLI) image data. Then, LULC pattern was linked with the variation of LST data of the Yangon area for the further connection of the correlation between surface temperature and urban structure. As a result, NDVI values were used to examine the relation between thermal behavior and condition of land cover categories. The spatial distribution of LST has been found mixed pattern and higher LST was located with the scatter pattern, which was related to certain LULC types within downtown, suburban 1 and 2. The result of this paper, LST and NDVI analysis exhibited a strong negative correlation without water bodies for all three portions of Yangon area. The strongest coefficient correlation was found downtown area (-0.8707) and followed suburban 1 (-0.7526) and suburban 2(-0.6923).

Perfluoropolymers represent the ultimate resistance to hostile chemical environments and high service temperature, attributed to the presence of fluorine in the polymer backbone, i.e. to the high bond energy of C-F and C-C bonds of fluorocarbons. Copolymers of Tetrafluoroethylene (TEE) and 2, 2, 4Trifluoro-5Trifluorometoxy- 1, 3Dioxole (TTD), commercially known as HYFLON AD, are amorphous perfluoropolymers with glass transition temperature (Tg)higher than room temperature, showing a thermal decomposition temperature exceeding 40$0^{\circ}C$. These polymer systems are highly soluble in fluorinated solvents, with low solution viscosities. This property allows the preparation of self-supported and composite membranes with desired membrane thickness. Symmetric and asymmetric perfluoropolymer membranes, made with HYFLON AD, have been prepared and evaluated. Porous and not porous symmetric membranes have been obtained by solvent evaporation with various processing conditions. Asymmetric membranes have been prepared by th wet phase inversion method. Measure of contact angle to distilled water have been carried out. Figure 1 compares experimental results with those of other commercial membranes. Contact angles of about 120$^{\circ}$for our amorphous perfluoropolymer membranes demonstrate that they posses a high hydrophobic character. Measure of contact angles to hexandecane have been also carried out to evaluate the organophobic character. Rsults are reported in Figure 2. The observed strong organophobicity leads to excellent fouling resistance and inertness. Porous membranes with pore size between 30 and 80 nanometers have shown no permeation to water at pressures as high as 10 bars. However high permeation to gases, such as O2, N2 and CO2, and no selectivities were observed. Considering the porous structure of the membrane, this behavior was expected. In consideration of the above properties, possible useful uses in th field of gas- liquid separations are envisaged for these membranes. A particularly promising application is in the field of membrane contactors, equipments in which membranes are used to improve mass transfer coefficients in respect to traditional extraction and absorption processes. Gas permeation properties have been evaluated for asymmetric membranes and composite symmetric ones. Experimental permselectivity values, obtained at different pressure differences, to various single gases are reported in Tab. 1, 2 and 3. Experimental data have been compared with literature data obtained with membranes made with different amorphous perfluoropolymer systems, such as copolymers of Perfluoro2, 2dimethyl dioxole (PDD) and Tetrafluorethylene, commercialized by the Du Pont Company with the trade name of Teflon AF. An interesting linear relationship between permeability and the glass transition temperature of the polymer constituting the membrane has been observed. Results are descussed in terms of polymer chain structure, which affects the presence of voids at molecular scale and their size distribution. Molecular Dyanmics studies are in progress in order to support the understanding of these results. A modified Theodoru- Suter method provided by the Amorphous Cell module of InsightII/Discover was used to determine the chain packing. A completely amorphous polymer box of about 3.5 nm was considered. Last but not least the use of amorphous perfluoropolymer membranes appears to be ideal when separation processes have to be performed in hostile environments, i.e. high temperatures and aggressive non-aqueous media, such as chemicals and solvents. In these cases Hyflon AD membranes can exploit the outstanding resistance of perfluoropolymers.
