  • As the features of recent flood are spatially concentrated, loss of life and property increase by the impact of climate change. In addition to this the public interest in water control information is increased and socially reasonable justification of water control policy is needed. It is necessary to estimate the flood risk in order to let people know the status of flood control and establish flood control policy. For accurate flood risk analysis, we should consider inter-relation between causal factors of flood damage. Hence, flood risk analysis should be applied to interdependence of the factors selected. The Bayesian networks are ideally suited to assist decision-making in situations where there is uncertainty in the data and where the variables are highly interlinked. In this research, to provide more proper water control information the flood risk analysis is performed using the Bayesian networks to handle uncertainty and dependency among 13 specific proxy variables.

  • We decompose the patent increase over the period 1982 through 2000 using the data provided by KIPO(Korean Intellectual Property Office) and also compare our results to U.S. experiences. First, we show that the contribution of the increase in the R&D spending accounts for $71\%$ of patent increase between 1982 and 2000. Second, an overall increase in patent intensity measured by patent-R&D ratio between 1982 and 2000 is explained by $234\%$ of the changes in the patent yields in individual industries rather than by the reallocation of resources. Third, we find that there is structural change in patent intensity and patenting between 1994 and 1995. The patent yields in individual industries account for $86.4\%$ of patent increase between 1994 and 1995. Fourth, two high tech fields, electrical machinery and precision instrument, account for about $80\%$ of the patent increase.

  • This study was carried out to investigate the changes of physical and chemical properties and the usability of long-term stored leaf tobacco. The physical chemical properties of the flue-cured and burley leaves produced in 1993, processed in 1994 were analysed from Nov. 1996 to Nov. 1999. The pH and moisture content in leaf decreased slowly until 4 years’storage after processing, while those of leaf changed little thereafter. However, total sugar content continuously decreased until 5 years after processing. The filling capacity increased and shatter resistance index decreased in long-term stored leaf. The sensory test, cilia stasis and the chemical components of cigarette smoke had no significant differences between short and long-term stored leaves. When the processed leaves were stored till 5 years after processing, there were no deteriorative effects on quality and usability of leaf tobacco. Therefore, it is considered that the processed leaf may be stored for 5 years or more under the inevitable situation.

  • As an unique acoustic characteristic of a Korean bell. beat phenomenon is a periodic repetition of strong and weak sounds. Beat sounds good when it is clear and it has a proper period, however, it is not easy to satisfy these two conditions simultaneously. In this study, we propose a beat tuning method to satisfy these two conditions, by using an equivalent bell model. First, we construct an equivalent bell which has the same beat property with the 1st beat of a real bell and we investigate the change of mode pair by finite element analysis, when thickness of the bell is locally decreased at $22.5^{\circ}$ from the striking point. From the analysis result, minimum thickness reduction amount is determined to make a clear and strong beat.

  • This paper provides a new concept of the controllable micro damper using MR(Magneto Rheological)fluids. The damper is composed of four layers which are fabricated by wet etching. The Process of the fabrication is explained and the change of damping property is experimentally shown. Since the damping force is controllable by the applied magnetic field the vibration can be effectively absorbed.

  • A microlens connected to microfluidic channel is fabricated. The microlens is sealed with an elastomeric membrane which deforms by pressure of fluid driven by a syringe pump resulting in the shape change of the microlens. The optical properties of the microlens could be controlled by changing the microlens shape. The microlens system were made of an elastomer, PDMS, using molding from a photoplastic master patterned by UV photolithography. The test results show the optical property of the lens could be made into convex and concave type by applying the fluidic pressure positive and negative.

  • To set up the outstanding and scientific dyeing method in making the condensed liquid of pigment obtained from onion skins and the improved reliability, the following basic experiments were performed. The pigment was extracted in the distilled water at $70^{\circ}C$ and methanol at room temperature and then it was analyzed with LC/MS/MS system (Liquid Chomatography/Mass Spectroscopy/Mass Spectroscophy, LIQ Advantage Max, Thermo Finnigan, USA) for its pigmental characteristics. The unrefined silk and refined silk were dyed by making use of the derived pigment in such a way. The chromameter (CR-200, Minolta, Japan) was used to measure the change in surface color in textiles to be dyed by the extracting condition and the color difference ${\Delta}E$ was determined according to the color difference formula CIE LAB through measuring the psychometric lightness L* and chromaticity coordinates a* and b*.

  • In this paper, we propose a new rank two quasi-Newton method based on adjoint Broyden updates for solving symmetric nonlinear equations, which can be seen as a class of adjoint BFGS method. The new rank two quasi-Newton update not only can guarantee that $B_{k+1}$ approximates Jacobian $F^{\prime}(x_{k+1})$ along direction $s_k$ exactly, but also shares some nice properties such as positive deniteness and least change property with BFGS method. Under suitable conditions, the proposed method converges globally and superlinearly. Some preliminary numerical results are reported to show that the proposed method is effective and competitive.

  • Pyrazolone group containing resin was tested as an acyl carrier in solid phase peptide synthesis. Several kinds of dipeptide derivatives were prepared by aminolysis reactions of Boc-amino acid-pyrazolone resin active ester with various carboxyl protected amino acid derivatives. It was found that the rates of aminolysis reactions were largely dependent on the bulkiness of the amino acid side chains, the carboxyl protecting groups, and the swelling property of the resin. All the dipeptide derivatives were obtained in high yield in 20-30 minutes, and the pyrazolone resin could be reused repeatedly in peptide synthesis without any change of its reactivity.

  • Near the conical intersection for the 1,2 $^{2}A'$ states of $H_3$ the derivative coupling vector is calculated and analyzed on the plane of internal coordinates, (U,V) or its polar coordinates $(S{\theta})$, based on the squares of the internuclear distances. It is shown that in the vicinity of the conical intersection the derivative coupling vector behaves like ${\theta}/2S$, which is responsible for the sign changes of the real-valued electronic wave function when the nuclear configuration traverses a closed path enclosing a conical intersection. The analytic property of the wave functions is studied and especially the observation of the sign change in the configuration state function (CSF) coefficients of the real-valued electronic wave functions is demonstrated.
