  • The immune system and neuroendocrine systems are the two key components that maintain bodily homeostasis. Peripheral blood specimens can indicate abnormalities in a body, which often cause various threats to human health, including devastating autoimmune or metabolic diseases. To develop a treatment regimen for such diseases, experimental animal models are indispensable to researchers in academic fields. In this study, we examined the peripheral blood of 3 representative mouse strains (ICR, Balb/c, and C57Bl/6), which are widely used, to investigate whether there is a difference in reference range according to animal model. We performed hematological and chemistry analysis on individuals of both genders. The results of hematology analysis showed that the number of most types of blood cells was lower in ICR than in the other two strains. The results of chemical analysis revealed no specific pattern, but different patterns according to the individual indicator. Although the distinction between ICR and B6 was prominent, differences between Balb/c and B6 were also observed for several indicators. For some indicators, totally different patterns existed between females and males. Conclusively, this study provides the information that 3 experimentally representative mouse models have their own basal levels of blood components, suggesting the importance of a careful choice of a proper mouse model in research into immune or metabolic diseases, to exclude any biases.

  • This study has been conducted to estimate the proper amount of phosphatic fertilizer required to increase-yield in growing soybeans on newly reclaimed-sterile land which is short of phosphatic fertilizer. IKSAN, the variety chosen for this study, was planted, using the plant spacing $60cm{\times}30cm$. Phosphatic fertilizer was applied in 4 levels in none, standard, double, and triple amount. and at the same time, nitrogen and postassium were applied only in standard amount. Randomized block design was applied in arranging the experimental plots. A series of results acquired are summarized as follows. 1. The fact was recognized that only the standard amount of phosphatic fertilizer is effective for increasing the pod numbers and the soybean yield per l0a. 2. The difference in stem length and stem diameter was very remarkable even among individual plants in the same plot, Throughout all four of the plots there were difference in stem length and stem diameter. That is to say, any invariable tendency on them due to the amount of phosphatic fertilizer applied could not be observed at all. 3. It was recognized that amount of phosphatic fertilizer applied did not have a considerable influence upon the weight of the seeds and the number of seeds contained in 0.l8ι. 4. It was observed that the weight of 1000 seeds was strikingly increased as far as double the amount phosphatic fertilizer.

  • This experiment was conducted to find out the simultaneous control effect of granulated insecticides on the several major rice insect pests in Korea. The granulated insecticides used were Terracur P$5\%$ (one of the phosphoric insecticides), Lebaycid $5\%$, and Sang-gamma (gamma-BHC) $6\%$. Those insecticides were broadcasted by hand on the paddy field at the ratio of 3kg. in June and 4kg. in August per 10 a, and the date of insecticidal application was based on the maximum moth occurrence of the rice stem borer in 1969. The rice insect pests tested in this study were rice stem borer (Chilo suppressalis W.), green rice leafhopper (Nephotettix bipunctatus cincticeps U.), smiller brown planthopper (Laodelphax striatellus F.), and white back planthopper (Sogotella furcifera H.). For the study of residual effectiveness of the insecticides, the rice stem borer larvae just hatched from the eggs were installed on the sheath of rice plants collected from the paddy field after insecticidal treatment, and the mortality was made at 48 hours after installation. High mortality was observed in Terracur P and Sang-gamma treatments and low mortality in Lebaycid treatment. The duration of residual effects giving about 50% mortality was about 14 days in Sang-gamma and about 6 days in Terracur P treatments. The study on the effectiveness of the insecticides to the rice stem borer in the paddy field was made by the number of dead blades and white heads of the rice plants injured by the larvae, and the number of survival larvae in the straws after crop harvest. The order of insecticidal effectiveness to the rice stem borer was Terracur P=Sang-gamm>Lebaycid. The study on the effectiveness of the insecticides to the leafhoppers and planthoppers in the paddy field was made by the population density by sweeping (5 times) at the given day intervals after treatments. Terracur P was highly effective for the control of the green rice leafhoppers and Lebaycid was moderately effective, but Sang-gamma seemed not to be effective. The effectiveness of the insecticides tested to the planthoppers was not clear, and it seemed to related with the low insect population density. Study on the determination of proper timing of insecticidal application was not also made clear, and it seemed to be short in the range of day intervals in the insecticidal application. For the study on the control effects of the rice insect pests, rice yield per 100 hills per plot was observed. There was no statistically significant difference among the treatments in rice yields, but the order of yield (Terracur P>Sang-gamma>Lebaycid>Control) was paralleled with the tends of control effects above mentioned. In a view point of simultaneous control of the rice stem borers and green rice leafhoppers by the application of granulated insecticides, Terracur P and Lebaycid were more effective than Sang-gamma which have been used.

  • The present study has been carried out to develop a computational procedure for the analysis of the off-design performance in centrifugal compressors with vaneless diffusers by integrating empirical loss models and analytical equations. Losses in centrifugal compressors stem from a number of sources and their exact calculation is not yet possible. This study investigates several modeling schemes and shows that a fairly good prediction can be achieved by a proper selection of the most important flow parameters resulting form a meanline one-dimensional analysis. The performance maps for compressors are calculated and compared with measured performance maps. The off-design performance characteristics in terms of the pressure ratio vs. mass flow produced have generally correct forms. However, no universal means have been found to predict accurately the onset of surge. The prediction method developed through this study can serve as a tool to ensure good matching between parts and it can assist the understanding of the operational characteristics of general purpose centrifugal compressors.

  • 1. This experiment was planned to compare the effectiveness of Diazinon granular and gammadol dust with the low toxic organophosphorus insecticides applied on the water-surface for the control of the rice stem borer, Chilo suppressalis Walker, in the 2 nd generation and to determine the proper timing of those insecticidal applications at Suwon, Korea, in 1964. 2. The hatching larvae from the eggs were inoculated on the rice plants in pots and insecticides were applied on the water-surface of pots at a given day intervals. The dose of insecticides used per pot was calculated from the 120g. as a actual ingredient per 10 a. The number of living larvae was observed at the 20 days later from the inoculation (as shown in Table 1.). 3. As shown in Table 2 and 3, there was highly significance between the chemicals and L.S.D. was 24.22. The best effectiveness was Diazinon granular and 2nd was gamma-dol dust. The organophosphorus emulsion concentrations used in this experiment were less effective than two other insecticides. Although there were some suspicious results according to the day intervals inoculated, the order of effectiveness was Diazinon>gamma-dol>Sumithion>EM>EPN> Cidial as the total moan. 4, As shown in Table 2 and 3, there was no significance between the timing of insecticidal applications, but, m the whole, Diazinon granular was most effective at a given day intervals in this experiment and gamma-dol also was effective at the day Plot inoculated. The proper timing of EPN, EM, and Cidial seemed to be at e day plot inoculated and that of Sumithion at the day plot before inoculation.

  • Two soybean cultivars different in plant type, Hwanggeumkong and Suweon-125, were planted under two different planting densities to investigate the proper planting densities after barley crops. The results obtained are summarized as follow: 1. No apparent varietal differences due to the planting densities were observed in flowering time and maturity. 2. The number of nodes of main stem showed significant differences between plant types, while they were not significantly different between planting densities. The number and length of branches per plant were apparently decreased as the planting densities were higher. 3. The number of pods per plant, and number and weight of grain per plant decreased as the planting densities increased and they showed also significant differences between planting densities. However, the number of pods, and number and weight of grain per unit land area were increased as the planting densities increased. 4. The grain yield per 10a showed significant cultivar difference under different planting densities. The Hwanggeumkong, determinate type, showed highest grain yield at the planting densities of $60{\times}7.5cm$, while Suweon-125, indeterminate type, highest at the planting densities of $60{\times}5.0cm$.

  • To determine the optimum sowing time and nursery period in Perilla frutescens in the southern areas of Korea, perilla frutescens cv. red Perilla local cultivar was grown under three different sowing dates and nursery periods. The blooming period of the area which was sown on the seedbed in Apr.10 and carried out the growing seedling in 30days is Aug. 12 and it is two days earlier than that of the area, Aug.14, sown on the seedbed in Apr. 20 and carried out the growing seedling in 30days of the same month and it is also six days earlier than that of the area, Aug.18, sown on the seedbed in April 30 and conducted the growing seedling in the same date. The stem lengths are 135cm,131cm and 125cm respectively and the number of branches are 26.4, 25.3 and 23.6 respectively. The fresh weight of stem and leaf at the area sown on the seedbed in Apr.10 and conducted the growing seedling in 30days with the width of leaf over 5cm in the middle of Aug. and at the beginning of Sep. is 2,476kg/10a and it shows more increase of 172kg than that of fresh weight of stem and leaf with 2,304kg/10a which was sown on the seedbed in Apr.20 and earned out the growing seedling in 30days, and it also shows more increase of 411kg than that of fresh weight of stem and leaf with 2,065kg/10a at the area sown on the seedbed in April 30 and conducted the growing seedling in the same date, The fresh weight of seeds are 609.5kg/10a,509.3kg/10a and 463.2kg/10a respectively and $100.2{\sim}146.3kg$ is more increased. Therefore, the seedling period of the proper seedbed for high yield bumper crop of perilla frutescens for exporting to Japan is April 10 and the number of days for seedling is 30 days.

  • This study was conducted to examine the effects of plant growth regulators (PGRs) on the lateral stem growth, and the change of total nonstructural carbohydrate (TNC) status of 'Zenith' zoysiagrass under shaded conditions. Well-established turf was subjected to a full sun, 47%, and 77% shade in a field study. Three different rates of flurprimidol (FP: 0.2, 0.4, and $0.8\;kg{\cdot}ha^{-1}$), paclobutrazol (PB: 0.16, 0.32, and $0.64\;kg{\cdot}ha^{-1}$), and trinexapac-ethyl (TE: 0.04, 0.08, and $0.16\;kg{\cdot}ha^{-1}$) were applied. Lateral development of 'Zenith' zoysiagrass decreased with increasing shade levels. However, compared with control plots, total stolon length and stolon number increased two fold at 0.2, $0.4\;kg{\cdot}ha^{-1}$ FP, and $0.16\;kg{\cdot}ha^{-1}$ PB under full sun. Under 77% shading, stolon number increased by 170% and total stolon length increased by 140% at $0.8\;kg{\cdot}ha^{-1}$ FP. Tiller number increased by 40% at $0.08\;kg{\cdot}ha^{-1}$ TE under full sun, and by 72% at $0.16\;kg{\cdot}ha^{-1}$ TE under 77% shading. The TNC contents of turfgrass treated with $0.8\;kg{\cdot}ha^{-1}$ FP and $0.16\;kg{\cdot}ha^{-1}$ TE increased by 50% as compared with control. Remarkably, nonstructural carbohydrates (NC) partitioning was enhanced by PGRs from leaf tissue to lateral stem tissue, which increased lateral development and may have contributed to recuperative rate. These results suggested that treatments of proper rate of PGRs could enhance the recuperative rate of 'Zenith' zoysiagrass by increasing lateral stem growth especially in shaded conditions.

  • This study was conducted to determine the effects of high temperature and deficit irrigation on growth and yield of hot pepper. Hot pepper was subjected to four irrigation treatments: fully irrigation (FI), 10, 20, and 30 days deficit irrigation (DI) combination with high temperature treatment. Control plants were grown natural environment and conventional culture methods. The plant height treated with high temperature was significantly higher than that of control plant. At FI combination with high temperature treatment, growth parameters such as stem diameter, leaf area, fresh and dry weight were the greatest. The yield was the greatest (2,036 kg/10a) under control, DI combination with high temperature treatment decreased by approximately 42% compare with FI combination with high temperature treatment. The number of abnormal fruits was approximately 38/plant under control, which was the smallest and that of 30 days DI combination with high temperature was higher 3.3 times compare with control. Flower abscission and calcium deficiency induced by DI treatments, especially those physiological disorder promoted by increasing DI treatments period. Results indicated that yield of hot pepper reduced by DI treatments, these results suggest that the growers should irrigate to proper soil moisture for preventing reduction of total fruit yield.

  • These studies were conducted to investigate the proper method of nitrogen application for increasing the growth stability and quality in ballon flower (Platycodon grandiflorum A. DC.). In growth characteristics by split ratio of nitrogen application, stem diameter, number of branching roots and number of leaves were higher at the split ratio of 50:50 (nitrogen were splitted a half with basal application and the other half in autumn) than at 70:30. Root length, root diameter and number of branching root were higher at 50:50 than those of 70:30. The root yield was increased by 30% (230 kg/10a) at 50:50 compared with that of the 70:30. The crude saponin contents of root from 50:50 was 4.68%.
