Propagation rates ($U_{edge}$) of various premixed, twin edge-flames were measured as a function of global strain rate ($\sigma$), mixture strength, and Lewis number (Le). Using a counterflow slot-jet burner with electrical heaters at each end, both advancing (positive $U_{edge}$) and retreating (negative $U_{edge}$) edge-flames can be studied as they propagate along the long dimension of the burner. Experimental results are presented for premixed methane/air twin flames in terms of the effects of $\sigma$ on $U_{edge}$. Both low-$\sigma$ and high-$\sigma$ extinction limits were discovered for all mixtures tested. As a result, the domain of edge-flame stability was obtained in terms of heat loss factor and normalized flame thickness, and comparison with the numerical result of other researchers was also made. For low ($CH_4/O_2/CO_2$) and high ($C_{3}H_{8}$/air) Lewis number cases, propagation rates clearly show a strong dependence on Le.
Within the scope of the plane-strain state, by utilizing the three-dimensional linearized theory of elastic waves in initially stressed piezoelectric and elastic materials, Lamb wave propagation and the influence of the initial stresses on this propagation in a sandwich plate with pre-stressed piezoelectric face and pre-stressed metal elastic core layers are investigated. Dispersion equations are derived for the extensional and flexural Lamb waves and, as a result of numerical solution to these equations, the corresponding dispersion curves for the first (fundamental) and second modes are constructed. Concrete numerical results are obtained for the cases where the face layers' materials are PZT-2 or PZT-6B, but the material of the middle layer is Steel (St) or Aluminum (Al). Sandwich plates PZT-2/St/PZT-2, PZT-2/Al/PZT-2, PZT-6B/St/PZT-6B and PZT-6B/Al/PZT-6B are examined and the influence of the problem parameters such as piezoelectric and dielectric constants, layer thickness ratios and third order elastic constants of the St and Al on the effects of the initial stresses on the wave propagation velocity is studied.
In this paper, an advanced error tracking algorithm by using feedback channel was proposed for error resilient transmission. Using this proposed algorithm, the propagation of errors were reduced within the decoded data over bit error prone network. The addresses of corrupted blocks are reported to encoder by decoder. With negative acknowledgments of feedback channel, the encoder can precisely calculate negative acknowledgments and track the propagated errors by examining the backward motion dependency for proper pixel in the current encoding frame. The error-propagation effects can be terminated completely by INTRA refreshing the affected macro-blocks by using proposed error tracking algorithm. By utilizing the selective four-corner error tracking approximation, the error tracking computations of the proposed algorithm is less than that of the algorithm using full pixel without substantial degradation in video quality. The proposed algorithm can track errors rapidly and accurately.
Acoustic characteristics of a sound absorbing material can be identified, if the characteristic impedance and propagation constants are known, which have generally been determined experimentally. One easy method determining these two essential parameters is to measure the one dimensional wave characteristics in the impedance tube. In th udy, the effects of backing conditions on the impedance tube measurement have been examined using several pairs of generally used end conditions. The results showed that the measured values are similar for most pairs of end conditions: however, it was observed that the measured characteristic impedance for different thickness did not agree well for some pairs. In this work, the multi termination method, using three or more known backing con ns, was suggested to reduce such random errors, which are mostly caused by the test procedure. Employing three terminations as a set, comprised of a rigid end, an end with porous material, and an end with a backing cavity, it was demonstrated that improved measured results could be obtained for an open cell PU foam varying widely with three different thicknesses.
The present study demonstrated lymphocystis disease virus (LCDV) propagation through cytopathic effects (CPE) formation and LCDV detection in olive flounder fin (FFN) cells by polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and fluorescent antibody technique (FAT) methods. Tissue filtrates from the cluster cells produced CPE in FFN cells, which initially cells became enlarged and gradually underwent fusion en masse. Infectivity of culture grown LCDV using the FFN cells reached $10^{2.3}$$TCID_{50}$/ml at 4 days post infection and the highest titer was measured $10^{6.5}$$TCID_{50}$/ml at 12 days. The viral DNA was detected in the cell culture supernatants showing CPE and the CPE cells by PCR. Antigen specific strong fluorescence reacting with monoclonal antibody against the virus revealed the presence of viral antigen in the cytoplasm of infected FFN cells. These results suggest that the FFN cell line originated from the olive flounder has a susceptibility of the LCDV.
In low bit-rate video transmission, the payload of a single packet can often contain a whole coded frame due to the high compression ratio in both spatial and temporal domains of most modern video coders. Thus, the loss of a single packet not only causes the loss of a whole frame, but also produces error propagation into subsequent frames. In this paper, we propose a novel whole frame error concealment algorithm which reconstructs the first of the subsequent frames instead of the current lost frame to suppress the effects of error propagation. In the proposed algorithm, we impose a constraint which uses side match distortion (SMD) and overlapped region difference (ORD) to estimate motion vectors between the target reconstructed frame and its reference frame. SMD measures the spatial smoothness connection between a block and its neighboring blocks. ORD is defined as the difference between the correlated pixels which are predicted from one reference pixel. Experimental results show that the proposed algorithm effectively suppresses error propagation and significantly outperforms other conventional techniques in terms of both peak signal-to-noise ratio performance and subjective visual quality.
This paper deals with the transient dynamic analysis and elastic wave propagation in a functionally graded graphene platelets (FGGPLs)-reinforced composite thick hollow cylinder, which is subjected to shock loading. A micromechanical model based on the Halpin-Tsai model and rule of mixture is modified for nonlinear functionally graded distributions of graphene platelets (GPLs) in polymer matrix of composites. The governing equations are derived for an axisymmetric FGGPLs-reinforced composite cylinder with a finite length and then solved using a hybrid meshless method based on the generalized finite difference (GFD) and Newmark finite difference methods. A numerical time discretization is performed for the dynamic problem using the Newmark method. The dynamic behaviors of the displacements and stresses are obtained and discussed in detail using the modified micromechanical model and meshless GFD method. The effects of the reinforcement of the composite cylinder by GPLs on the elastic wave propagations in both displacement and stress fields are obtained for various parameters. It is concluded that the proposed micromechanical model and also the meshless GFD method have a high capability to simulate the composite structures under shock loadings, which are reinforced by FGGPLs. It is shown that the modified micromechanical model and solution technique based on the meshless GFD method are accurate. Also, the time histories of the field variables are shown for various parameters.
We investigated two flares in the solar atmosphere that occurred on June 3, 2012 and July 6, 2012 and caused propagation of Moreton and EIT waves. In the June 3 event, we noticed a filament winking which presumably was caused by the wave propagation from the flare. An interesting feature of this event is that there was a reflection of this wave by a coronal hole located alongside the wave propagation, but not all of this wave was transmitted by the coronal hole. Using the running difference method, we calculated the speed of Moreton and EIT waves and we found values of 926 km/s before the reflection and 276 km/s after the reflection (Moreton wave) and 1,127 km/s before the reflection and 46 km/s after the reflection (EIT wave). In the July 6 event, this phenomenon was accompanied by type II and type III solar radio bursts, and we also performed a running difference analysis to find the speed of the Moreton wave, obtaining a value of 988 km/s. The speed derived from the analysis of the solar radio burst was 1,200 km/s, and we assume that this difference was caused by the different nature of the motions in these phenomena, where the solar radio burst was caused by the propagating particles, not waves.
In Korean geology that crystalline rock is dominant, the properties of subsurface including the anisotropy are distributed complexly and changed abruptly. Because of such geological environments, cross-hole seismic traveltime tomography is widely used to obtain the high resolution image of the subsurface for the engineering purposes in the geotechnical sites. However, because the cross-hole tomography has a wide propagation angle coverage relatively, its data tend to include the seismic velocity anisotropy comparing with the surface seismic methods. It can cause the misinterpretation that the cross-hole seismic data including the anisotropic effects are analyzed and treated with the general processing techniques assuming the isotropy. Therefore, we need to consider the seismic anisotropy in cross-hole seismic traveltime tomography. The seismic anisotropic tomography algorithm, which is developed for evaluation of the velocity anisotropy, includes several inversion schemes in order to make the inversion process stable and robust. First of all, the set of the inversion parameters is limited to one slowness, two ratios of slowness and one direction of the anisotropy symmetric axis. The ranges of the inversion parameters are localized by the pseudo-beta transform to obtain the reasonable inversion results and the inversion constraints are controlled efficiently by ACB(Active Constraint Balancing) method. Especially, the inversion using the Fresnel volume is applied to the anisotropic tomography and it can make the anisotropic tomography more stable than ray tomography as it widens the propagation angle coverage.

A two phase model for the simulation of flame propagation has been developed and applied to a mixture of coal air. The effects associated with changes in the initial coal partial equivalence ratio and the initial diameter of particles on the structure of laminar flame propagation have been studied qualitatively and quantitatively. Especially the flame structure, the burning velocity, and the thermal behavior were evaluated. It was found that the radiative heat transfer absolutely dominates over the conduction mode. The increase in particle size was seen to contribute to an obvious increase in burning velocity for fuel lean and stoichiometric mixture. But for fuel rich mixture, the burning velocity was found to exhibit a weaker dependence on particle size.
