  • For LW-TLM antenna of 65 kHz, Near-field propagation characteristics due to wave propagation obstacle are analyzed in this paper. The simulation modeling for propagation effects are based on the model of actual LW-TLM antenna which utilizes the frequency of 65 kHz, and the model expressed as propagation obstacle at a mountain height and a proximity of antenna and mountain. The near-field performance are analyzed based on the parameters of simulation model. In case of a normal mountain height and distance between the adjacent mountain and antenna site, a field strength change of about 1.7 dB has occurred. Above the constant distance of propagation obstacle and antenna, the wave propagation characteristics of disregarding the effects of propagation obstacle are shown. The results of this paper can be used to design and build a transmitting antenna site with 65 kHz operating frequency.

  • In this study, experimental study was conducted to examine the influence of explosion pressure and flame propagation velocity of methane-air mixtures due to the obstacles placed in the explosion space. We used the quantified parameter named barrier ratio in order to generalize the effect of explosion pressure and flame propagation velocity in the closed explosion space with obstacles. From experimental observations, the explosion pressure and flame propagation velocity regardless of the number of obstacles increased with barrier ratio. In the same methane concentration of 10% methane, the flame propagation velocity without obstacle (barrier ratio = 0) was 3.46 m/s but 24.24 m/s (increase about 7 times) with 3 obstacle and barrier ratio of 0.98. In the same barrier ratio, explosion pressure and flame propagation velocity increased sharply with increasing of the number of obstacles.

  • In this study, the effects of urban areas against flood waves due to a dam failure were numerically investigated based on the two laboratory experiments and the predicted water surface elevations at specific points showed good agreement with available measurements. In the first experiment, a relatively high water depth and the delay effect of flow at the front of urban areas are observed. The urban areas may become a large obstacle against smooth propagation of flood wave. In the second one, as the inflow increases, moreover, the water surface elevations can be classified into abruptly decreasing portion and slowly decreasing portion, and the first arrival time to the front of urban area is decreasing with the increasing inflow.
