In order to understand long range wave propagation in railway tracks, it is required to identify how far vibrations can travel along a rail. To answer this question, the attenuation characteristics of the main propagating waves are required as a function of distance. In this work, it is identified which wave types predominantly propagate on various regions of the rail cross-section. Then decay rates of propagating waves in railway tracks are investigated for frequencies up to 80 kHz. A numerical method called the Wavenumber Finite Element (WFE) method is utilized to predict dispersion curves and decay rates for a rail on a continuous foundation. In order to validate the simulated results, measurements have been performed on a test track and an operational railway track. The measured results are compared with the output of the simulations and good agreements are found between them.
The paper studies the attenuation of the axisymmetric longitudinal waves propagating in the bi-layered hollow cylinder made of linear viscoelastic materials. Investigations are made by utilizing the exact equations of motion of the theory of viscoelasticity. The dispersion equation is obtained for an arbitrary type of hereditary operator of the materials of the constituents and a solution algorithm is developed for obtaining numerical results on the attenuation of the waves under consideration. Specific numerical results are presented and discussed for the case where the viscoelasticity of the materials is described through fractional-exponential operators by Rabotnov. In particular, how the rheological parameters influence the attenuation of the axisymmetric longitudinal waves propagating in the cylinder under consideration, is established.
We investigated the influence of variable thermal conductivity on waves propagating through the elastic medium. Infinitesimal deformation results in generation of thermal signal, and is analyzed by using dual phase lag heat (DPL) conduction model. The medium considered is homogenous, isotropic and bounded by thermal shock. The elastic waves propagating through the medium are considered to be harmonic in nature, and expressions for the physical variables are obtained accordingly. Analytically, we obtained the expressions for displacement components, temperature, micro-temperature component and stresses. The theoretical results obtained are computed graphically for the particular medium by using MATLAB.
The effect of liquid confined in a pipe on elastic waves propagating in the pipe wall was studied theoretically and experimentally. The axisymmetric motion of the wave was modeled with the cylindrical membrane shell theory. The liquid pressure satisfying the axisymmetric wave equation was included in the governing equation as a radial load. The phase speed of the wave propagating in the axial direction was calculated, accounting for the apparent mass of the liquid. Experiments were performed in a pipe equipped with ring-shaped, piezoelectric transducers that were used for transmitting and receiving axisymmetric elastic waves in the pipe wall. The measured wave speeds were compared with the analytical ones. This work demonstrates the feasibility of using pipe waves for the determination of the density and, eventually, the flow rate of the liquid in a pipe.
Three-dimensional structures of unsteady detonation wave propagating through a square-shaped tube is studied using computational method and parallel processing. Inviscid fluid dynamics equations coupled with variable-${\gamma}$ formulation and simplified one-step Arrhenius chemical reaction model were analysed by a MUSCL-type TVD scheme and four stage Runge-Kutta time integration. Results in three dimension show the two unsteady detonation wave propagating mode, the Rectangular and diagonal mode of detonation wave instabilities. Two different modes of instability showed the same cell length but different cell width and the geometric similarities in smoked-foil record.
The analysis of a coaxial cable with periodic slots as a leaky-wave antenna is considered. The mode matching method and method of moments with Galerkin testing procedure is then used to obtain the determinantal equation for the unknown leaky-wave propagating constant. Both technigues allow the fields to be obtained in any region, and the radiation characteristics of the structure. By resorting to a suitable numerical techniques, it is possible to calculate the leaky-wave propagating constants and the radiation patterns. Numerical results demonstrate the validity of the technique.
The distilled water is used for the ultrasonic wave propagating material in the measurements of broadband ultrasonic attenuation (BUA) that is applied in industrial and medical applications, The acoustic impedance of water is significantly changed with its temperature. Therefore, the quantitative evaluation of BUA with temperature and the ultrasonic wave propagating distance is highly needed. In this study, we evaluated the variation of attenuation with change in temperature. To measure the variation of BUA in the low frequency region at the temperatures, 27$^{\circ}C$, 29$^{\circ}C$, and 31$^{\circ}C$, we tested the Plyethylene, Teflon, MC-Nylon, Urethane specimens and analyzed the center frequency, frequency bandwidth, spectral peak amplitude. The results showed that BUA value appeared to be lower with increasing temperature. This may be due to the fact that the frequency feature of ultrasonic wave is affected by not only the specific gravity, acoustic impedence, but material crystalline, porosity, the distance of ultrasonic wave propagation in water.
A bar with periodically nonuniform material properties is selected as a one-dimensional model of a flat-panel speaker. This paper describes a theoretical approach to the bending waves propagating in the nonuniform bar. The phase speed of the wave is obtained using perturbation techniques for small amplitude, sinusoidal modulation of the flexural rigidity and mass density. It is shown that the wave speed is decreased due to the nonuniformity of the material properties by the amount proportional to the square of the modulation amplitude.
Compression waves propagating in a high speed railway tunnel impose large pressure fluctuations on the train body or tunnel structures. The pressure fluctuations can cause ear discomfort for the passengers and increase the aerodynamic resistance of trains. As a fundamental research to resolve the pressure wave phenomenon in the tunnel, a steady theory of Chester-Chisnell- Whitham was applied to a simple shock tube with a sudden cross-sectional area reduction to model trains inside the tunnel. The results of the present theoretical analysis were compared with the experiments of the shock tube. The results show that the reflected compression wave from the model becomes stronger as the strength of incident compression wave and the blockage ratio increase. However, the compression wave passing through the model is not strongly dependent on the blockage ratio. The theoretical results are in good agreement with the experiments.
This study presents the attenuation characteristics of the first guided longitudinal wave mode propagating in water-filled, buried steel pipes in order to investigate the effects of soil saturation and compaction on the attenuation patterns. For numerical calculation of attenuation, 10 different combinations of S-wave velocity, P-wave velocity, and soil densities were considered. From the attenuation dispersion curves, which were obtained using Disperse software, we determined that the attenuation decreases as saturation increases, whereas it increases as compaction increases. Over the frequency range from 0.2 to 0.4 MHz, the first longitudinal wave mode has attenuations that are relatively lower than for other ranges, is faster than the first flexural wave mode, and is sensitive to defects aligned in the axial direction. Hence, the first longitudinal wave mode over the mentioned frequency range would be the proper choice for long-range buried pipelines that transport water.
